Following a major earthquake, a 15-metre tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling of three Fukushima Daiichi reactors, causing a nuclear accident beginning on 11 March 2011. All three cores largely melted in the first three days.

What's really going on at Fukushima?

At the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the gigantic wave surged over defences and flooded the reactors, sparking a major disaster. Authorities set up an exclusion zone which grew larger and larger as radiation leaked from the plant, forcing more than 150,000 people to evacuate from the area.

Is Fukushima safe now?

The no-entry zone around the nuclear plant makes up less than 3% of the prefecture's area, and even inside most of the no-entry zone, radiation levels have declined far below the levels that airplane passengers are exposed to at cruising altitude. Needless to say, Fukushima is perfectly safe for tourists to visit.

Is Fukushima still burning?

About 900 tons of melted nuclear fuel remain inside the three damaged reactors, and its removal is a daunting task that officials say will take 30-40 years. ... Plant chief Akira Ono says the inability to see what's happening inside the reactors means that details about the melted fuel are still largely unknown.

How long will Fukushima be uninhabitable?

A large area around the Fukushima nuclear power plant will be uninhabitable for at least 100 years.

How Fukushima Disaster ACTUALLY Happened

Is there corium at Fukushima?

In 2011, during the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, the temperature inside the reactor rose above 2000 °C, causing the uranium fuel to melt and further react with the vapour-oxidised zirconium cladding, which in turn led to the formation of corium.

Are the Fukushima 50 Still Alive?

The Fukushima 50 aren't on their own anymore — there are now about 400 Tokyo Electric Power Co. employees inside the plant. They work in rotating 12-hour shifts. The high levels of contamination make it hard to get supplies to them, so food and water are scarce.

Has Japan recovered from Fukushima?

TOKYO (AP) — Ten years after a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeastern coast, triggering meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, much has been achieved in disaster-hit areas but they are still recovering. ... The magnitude 9.0 earthquake was one of the strongest temblors on record.

Can Fukushima be cleaned up?

An initial experimental phase for clearing up and removing all the molten nuclear fuel on each reactor floor is targeted to begin in 2022, two years behind schedule. A robot arm to be used in the process is under development in the U.K., but work to create it was delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Is Fukushima still leaking into ocean?

The accumulating water has been stored in tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi plant since 2011, when a massive earthquake and tsunami damaged its reactors and their cooling water became contaminated and began leaking. ... TEPCO says its water storage capacity of 1.37 million tons will be full around the fall of 2022.

Is it safe to eat fish after Fukushima?

A study clears most seafood from any dangerous health effect five years after the nuclear disaster. Nearly five years after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, most seafood caught off the coast of Japan is safe to eat, according to a new study.

What is the most radioactive place on earth?

1 Fukushima, Japan Is The Most Radioactive Place On Earth

Fukushima is the most radioactive place on Earth. A tsunami led to reactors melting at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

What would happen if you touched the elephants foot?

The Elephant's Foot is so deadly that spending only 30 seconds near it will result in dizziness and fatigue. Two minutes near it and your cells will begin to hemorrhage. By the time you hit the five-minute mark, you're a goner. Even after 30 years, the foot is still melting through the concrete base of the power plant.

Is Fukushima worse than Chernobyl?

Chernobyl is widely acknowledged to be the worst nuclear accident in history, but a few scientists have argued that the accident at Fukushima was even more destructive. Both events were far worse than the partial meltdown of a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Is Fukushima poisoning the Pacific?

The nuclear disaster at Fukushima sent an unprecedented amount of radiation into the Pacific. ... The contaminated water has since been used to cool the destroyed reactor blocks to prevent further nuclear meltdowns. It is currently being stored in large tanks, but those are expected to be full by 2022.

Does anyone live in Fukushima today?

Since the evacuation order was lifted a year later, 3,650 people have returned; just a fraction of the 13,000 who lived here before 2011. Some have died, including of old age, and others, especially young people and families, have relocated permanently elsewhere.

How did 2011 Japan tsunami happen?

The 2011 event resulted from thrust faulting on the subduction zone plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. ... The March 11, 2011, earthquake generated a tsunami with a maximum wave height of almost 40 meters (130 feet) in the Iwate Prefecture.

How many people were displaced by Fukushima?

More than 20,000 people are estimated to have died, mostly in the tsunami, and nearly half a million people were displaced as the region suffered the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

What would have happened had the pools containing discarded nuclear fuel boiled dry?

7) What would have happened had the pools containing discarded nuclear fuel boiled dry? What did they decide to do about the situation? If the pools boiled dry, they could catch fire, and the contamination could be even worse than from a reactor meltdown.

How many died in the Fukushima tsunami?
