The slide rule is a mechanical analog computer. As a graphical analog calculator, the slide rule is closely related to a nomogram; the former is used for general calculations, the latter for application-specific computations.

What is slide rule Short answer?

The slide rule, or slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer. The slide rule is used mainly for multiplication and division, and also for "scientific" functions such as roots, logarithms and trigonometry, but usually not for addition or subtraction.

What is the slide rule?

The slide rule is a mechanical analog computer. ... At its simplest, each number to be multiplied is represented by a length on a sliding ruler. As the rulers each have a logarithmic scale, it is possible to align them to read the sum of the logarithms, and hence calculate the product of the two numbers.

Why is a slide rule?

In its simplest form, the slide rule adds and subtracts lengths in order to calculate a total distance. But slide rules can also handle multiplication and division, find square roots, and do other sophisticated calculations.

What are features of slide rule?

Typical slide rules contain scales for multiplying, dividing, and extracting square roots, and some also contain scales for calculating trigonometric functions and logarithms.

The Slide Rule

Why was slide rule invented?

The slide rule was invented by William Oughtred (1574–1660), an English mathematician. ... In fact, slide rules were invented specifically for multiplying and dividing large numbers using logarithms shortly after John Napier invented logarithms.

What is the best slide rule?

Faber-Castell 2/83N Novo-Duplex: Size 38 x 7 cm, 30 scales, plastic. This model is regarded by some as one of the finest slide rules ever made. Its combination of size, build, sophistication of scales offered and attractive use of colour gives a slide rule that impresses!

What is the slide rule in baseball?

The slide rule prohibits runners from using a "roll block" or attempting to initiate contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking his leg above the fielder's knee, throwing his arm or his upper body or grabbing the fielder.

How accurate is a slide rule?

A slide rule is only as accurate as its manufacture and calibration and your ability to set it and read values. In practice, you get between two and three significant figures from slide rule calculations, and these errors compound as you use intermediate values in subsequent calculations.

What is the basic concept of how a slide rule works?

A slide rule works by adding or subtracting the numerical exponents of numbers for multiplication or division, respectively. Thus, numbers to be multiplied or divided are converted to their logarithmic values and their exponents are added or subtracted.

How do you use a slide rule bezel?

How to do Multiplication Using the Bezel Slide Rule. Rotate the number (adjusting the decimal) that you would like to multiply on the outer ring to the origin, usually 10, on the inner ring. Look for the other number you would like to multiply by (adjusting the decimal) on the inner ring.

Who made slide rule?

The slide rule was invented by William Oughtred in the 1600's, but only began to be widely used in the mid 1800's after a French artillery officer named Amedee Mannheim developed a version that became popular among engineers. By the early 1900's engineering students in the US were commonly taught to use slide rules.

Do they still make slide rules?

Though they're no longer produced, the company still stocks around 1,200 or so and occasionally gets an order for some. Why would anyone still want to buy a slide rule, when inexpensive calculators are so readily available? According to Haase, slide rules are better suited to some functions than are calculators.

How much is an old slide rule worth?

These can run close to $1,000 in good condition. Whatever you do, be sure any slide rule you buy is fully intact and working, as finding replacement parts for a specific model (especially the cursor) can be next to impossible.

How do you use psychrometric slide rule?

Once you have obtained the wet and dry bulb temperatures the slide rule can be used to determine humidity. The ruler needs to be slid until the wet and dry bulb temperatures line up. The arrow on the end will point to the relative humidity percentage.

What is an illegal slide?

The definition of an illegal slide, according to rule 2-32-2 in the NFHS rulebook, lists a few important distinctions: The runner uses a rolling, cross-body or pop-up slide into the fielder. The runner's raised leg is higher than the fielder's knee when the fielder is in a standing position.

Do you have to slide into third?

Comment: There is no “must slide rule.” The rule is, “slide, or attempt to get around.” The key in this situation is, “the fielder has the ball and is waiting to make a tag.” If the fielder (any fielder, not just the catcher) does not have the ball, and there is a collision, you CANNOT call the runner out.

Do runners have to slide into home?

Must a runner slide into home plate? No. Little League does not have a “Must Slide” rule for a runner sliding into home or any other base. However, any runner is out when the runner does not slide or attempt to get around a fielder who has the ball and is waiting to make the tag.

Is slide rule a digital or analog computer?

The slide rule, also known colloquially in the United States as a slipstick,is a mechanical analog computer. The slide rule is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for functions such as exponents, roots, logarithms and trigonometry, but is not normally used for addition or subtraction.

What was the second invention of Babbage?

In addition to conceiving the first automatic digital computer, Babbage made notable contributions in other areas. He assisted in establishing the modern postal system in England and compiled the first reliable actuarial tables. He also invented a type of speedometer and the locomotive cowcatcher.

When was the slide rule last used?

Slide rules became increasingly popular in the 1950s and 1960s, before beginning to fall out of favor to pocket calculators, which, by the mid 1970s, had become affordable and were considered significantly easier to use by the masses. The last slide rule manufactured in the United States was produced on July 11, 1976.

What is a slide rule bezel?

The slide rule bezel is basically two matching logarithmic scales — one stationary and one on a rotating outer ring. You perform multiplication and division by rotating the outer ring.

What are tachymeter watches used for?

The most common use of a tachymeter is for measuring the approximate speed of a vehicle over a known distance. e.g.) Based on how many seconds it takes a vehicle to travel 1km or 1 mile (the available measuring range is up to 60 seconds), the average speed within the distance can be calculated.
