Antinuclear antibodies are autoantibodies that bind to contents of the cell nucleus. In normal individuals, the immune system produces antibodies to foreign proteins but not to human proteins. In some cases, antibodies to human antigens are produced.

What does it mean when you test positive for ANA?

In most cases, a positive ANA test indicates that your immune system has launched a misdirected attack on your own tissue — in other words, an autoimmune reaction. But some people have positive ANA tests even when they're healthy.

What are the symptoms of a positive ANA?

Clinical features that can emerge include but are not limited to fever, chills, joint swelling, nasal/oral ulcers, hair loss, severe dry eyes/dry mouth, and kidney disease. By itself, a positive ANA does not in any way mean you have an autoimmune disease or need treatment.

What is a normal ANA level?

ANAs can be found in approximately 5% of the normal population, usually in low titers (low levels). These people usually have no disease. Titers of 1:80 or lower are less likely to be significant. (ANA titers of less than or equal to 1:40 are considered negative.)

What does a speckled ANA test mean?

Speckled: Fine and coarse speckles of ANA staining are seen throughout the nucleus. This pattern is more commonly associated with antibodies to extractable nuclear antigens. This pattern can be associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, Systemic Sclerosis, Polymyositis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

5 Things You Need To Know About Your Positive ANA

Does speckled ANA mean lupus?

Peripheral or rim (only the outline of the nucleus is seen, like a halo)—not common, almost always indicates lupus. Speckled (tiny dots throughout the nucleus)—a common pattern, not specific, but often indicating anti-Sm or anti-RNP antibodies (see below) found in lupus or mixed connective tissue disease.

What cancers cause positive ANA?

Neoplastic diseases may cause positive ANA. Some authors have described that ANA is found in the sera from lung, breast, head and neck cancer patients as frequently as in RA and SLE 3, 4, 5. Chapman et al. 6 has suggested that in breast cancer they may be used as an aid to early diagnosis.

Can low vitamin D cause positive ANA?

The authors noted a linear relationship wherein patients with severe vitamin D deficiency demonstrated 2.99 increased in odds of receiving a positive ANA test, while those patients that were deficient and insufficient had just twice the increase in odds of a positive ANA [19].

Is lupus a terminal illness?

With close follow-up and treatment, 80-90% of people with lupus can expect to live a normal life span. It is true that medical science has not yet developed a method for curing lupus, and some people do die from the disease. However, for the majority of people living with the disease today, it will not be fatal.

Is ANA positive curable?

If the result accompanies a set of symptoms and a medical history that confirm a lupus diagnosis, the doctor will advise the individual about how to manage the condition. There is currently no cure for lupus. Drug treatments may include painkillers called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

What tests are done after a positive ANA?

For patients with a positive ANA, more tests are usually performed to check for other antibodies that can help confirm the diagnosis. This series of tests, commonly called an ANA panel, checks for the following antibodies: anti-double-stranded DNA, anti-Smith, anti-U1RNP, anti-Ro/SSA, and anti-La/SSB.

What viral infections cause positive ANA?

Autoantibodies may be detected in a variety of viral illnesses including hepatitis A, B, and C, parvovirus B19, enteroviruses, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr viruses (EBV) [1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11].

What are autoimmune diseases caused by?

What are autoimmune diseases? Your immune system is made up of organs and cells meant to protect your body from bacteria, parasites, viruses and cancer cells. An autoimmune disease is the result of the immune system accidentally attacking your body instead of protecting it.

What autoimmune diseases cause positive ANA?

• Systemic lupus erythematosus.
• Sjögren's syndrome -- a disease that causes dry eyes and mouth.
• Scleroderma -- a connective tissue disease.
• Rheumatoid arthritis -- this causes joint damage, pain, and swelling.
• Polymyositis -- a disease that causes muscle weakness.

Can inflammation cause positive ANA?

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are present in many systemic autoimmune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, a positive ANA test may also be seen with non-autoimmune inflammatory diseases, including both acute and chronic infections.

Can a positive ANA test turn negative?

The new criteria require that the test for antinuclear antibody (ANA) must be positive, at least once, but not necessarily at the time of the diagnosis decision because an ANA can become negative with treatment or remission.

Does lupus cause weight gain?

Weight changes — Lupus can sometimes cause weight loss or weight gain. Weight loss may be unintentional and due to decreased appetite or problems with the digestive system (see 'Digestive system' below). It can also be a side effect of some medications used to treat lupus.

How does a person get lupus?

It's likely that lupus results from a combination of your genetics and your environment. It appears that people with an inherited predisposition for lupus may develop the disease when they come into contact with something in the environment that can trigger lupus. The cause of lupus in most cases, however, is unknown.

Can lupus go away?

There's currently no cure for lupus. Treatment of lupus is focused on controlling your symptoms and limiting the amount of the damage the disease does to your body. The condition can be managed to minimize the impact lupus has on your life, but it will never go away.

Can stress cause positive ANA?

Signs of stress-related ANA reactivity were seen among connective tissue disease (CTD) patients (including patients with systemic lupus erythematosus; mixed CTD; calcinosis, Reynaud's phenomenon, esophageal motility disorders, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia; scleroderma; and Sjögren's syndrome): 11% showed stress- ...

Can an ANA pattern change?

ANA titers may increase and decrease over the course of the disease; these fluctuations do not necessarily correlate with disease activity. Thus, it is not useful to follow the ANA test in someone already diagnosed with lupus.

What medicines cause positive ANA?

Positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test result; usually antihistone antibodies.
...
Medications reported to have a definite relationship to DILE, based on controlled studies, include the following²:

• Sulfadiazine.
• Hydralazine.
• Procainamide.
• Isoniazid.
• Methyldopa.
• Quinidine.
• Minocycline.
• Chlorpromazine.

Does positive ANA always mean lupus?

If your doctor says your ANA test is “positive,” that means you have antinuclear antibodies in your blood — but it doesn't necessarily mean you have lupus. In fact, a large portion of patients with a positive ANA do not have lupus.

Can a positive ANA mean leukemia?

Serum antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are positive in some patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but the prognostic value of ANAs remains unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ANAs as a prognostic factor in CLL.

Does fibromyalgia cause positive ANA?

Most of the false-positive ANAs were of low titer, but even a high-titer ANA is not proof of an underlying connective tissue disease. Therefore, not surprisingly, ANA testing is frequently positive in patients with fibromyalgia.
