A polygene is a member of a group of non-epistatic genes that interact additively to influence a phenotypic trait, thus contributing to multiple-gene inheritance, a type of non-Mendelian inheritance, as opposed to single-gene inheritance, which is the core notion of Mendelian inheritance.

What is an example of a polygenic trait?

A polygenic trait is a characteristic, sometimes we call them phenotypes, that are affected by many, many different genes. A classic example of this would be height. Height in humans is very strongly genetically controlled, but there are many, many different genes that control height.

Which traits are polygenic traits?

In humans, height, skin color, hair color, and eye color are examples of polygenic traits. The term polygenic comes from poly, meaning “many” and genic, meaning “of genes”.

What are two examples of polygenic traits?

Some examples of polygenic inheritance are: human skin and eye color; height, weight and inteligence in people; and kernel color of wheat.

Which definition best describes polygenic traits?

The best definition which describes polygenic traits is :

B) traits that are controlled by multiple genes. Polygenic traits basically mean the traits that are a result of multiple intertwined traits like for example skin colour.

What is a polygenic trait quizlet?

polygenic triats. a trait that is controlled by several pairs of genes; different combinations of all the genes contribute to the trait in varying degrees. multiple allele traits.

What do polygenic traits result from?

Polygenic traits are due to the actions of more than one gene and often, their interaction with the environment. These usually result in a measurable range in phenotype, such as height, eye color or skin color. These are known as multifactoral or quantitative characteristics.

How do polygenes control traits?

Polygenic traits are traits that are controlled by multiple genes instead of just one. The genes that control them may be located near each other or even on separate chromosomes. Because multiple genes are involved, polygenic traits do not follow Mendel's pattern of inheritance.

What causes variations in traits like hair color eye color and height?

Human features like height, eye color, and hair color come in lots of slightly different forms because they are controlled by many genes, each of which contributes some amount to the overall phenotype.

Is hair color a polygenic trait?

Human skin, hair, and eye color are also polygenic traits because they are influenced by more than one allele at different loci.

What are examples of epistasis?

An example of epistasis is the interaction between hair colour and baldness. A gene for total baldness would be epistatic to one for blond hair or red hair. The hair-colour genes are hypostatic to the baldness gene. The baldness phenotype supersedes genes for hair colour, and so the effects are non-additive.

What is an example of Codominance?

Codominance means that neither allele can mask the expression of the other allele. An example in humans would be the ABO blood group, where alleles A and alleles B are both expressed. So if an individual inherits allele A from their mother and allele B from their father, they have blood type AB.

What does polygenic mean in psychology?

an attribute that is determined by numerous genes rather than only one. An example is a person's height.

What is polygenic inheritance class 12?

Polygenic inheritance occurs when one characteristic of an organism is controlled by two or more genes. ... When more than two alternative alleles of the gene occupy the same locus on chromosome it is known as multiple alleles. It is also termed as more than two contrasting alleles for a gene.

What is the rarest eye color?

The production of melanin in the iris is what influences eye color. More melanin produces a darker coloring, while less makes for lighter eyes. Green eyes are the rarest, but there exist anecdotal reports that gray eyes are even rarer. Eye color isn't just a superfluous part of your appearance.

Why are green eyes so rare?

But why are green eyes so rare? ... Iris color is determined by our parents' eye colors mixed with a little genetic lottery. Green irises have an uncommon melanin level — less than “truly” brown eyes, but more than blue eyes. This is why green eyes are so unique.

Can two blue-eyed parents make brown eyes?

Eye color is not an example of a simple genetic trait, and blue eyes are not determined by a recessive allele at one gene. Instead, eye color is determined by variation at several different genes and the interactions between them, and this makes it possible for two blue-eyed parents to have brown-eyed children.

Why are polygenic traits important?

The statistical analysis of polygenic inheritance patterns can help to provide an estimate of population parameters. Most of the polygenic inheritance follow the normal distribution curve, wherein the majority of the people fall in the middle range of the curve. Polygenic inheritance is different from multiple alleles.

Is gender a polygenic trait?

Y: Sex in humans is a polygenic trait depending upon a cumulative effect of some genes on X chromosome and some on Y chromosome.

How are polygenic traits different from traits that only require 2 genes?

8) How are polygenic traits different from traits that only require 2 genes? The polygenic traits have a wide variation in each trait. ... The children can have more tall genes than either parent. The environment also plays a role in the expression of traits.

What illustrates polygenic inheritance?

Which examples illustrate polygenic inheritance? An individual's sex is determined by: the sex chromosomes contributed by the father. ... Qualities like his IQ are polygenic, or determined by the interaction of many genes.

Which trait is a polygenic trait genes?

Traits that display a continuous distribution, such as height or skin color, are polygenic. The inheritance of polygenic traits does not show the phenotypic ratios characteristic of Mendelian inheritance , though each of the genes contributing to the trait is inherited as described by Gregor Mendel .

What is an example of polygenic inheritance quizlet?

An example of polygenic inheritance in humans is skin color. The skin color is controlled by 1, 3, & 4 genes.

What is the main clue used to identify polygenic traits?

Usually, traits are polygenic when there is wide variation in the trait. For example, humans can be many different sizes. Height is a polygenic trait, controlled by at least three genes with six alleles. If you are dominant for all of the alleles for height, then you will be very tall.

Is weight a polygenic trait?

In polygenic inheritance, traits are determined by multiple genes, or polygenes. Polygenic traits may express several different phenotypes, or displayed characteristics. ... Examples of polygenic traits include skin color, eye color, hair color, body shape, height, and weight.
