A homology class in a singular homology theory is represented by a finite linear combination of geometric subobjects with zero boundary. Such a linear combination is considered to be homologous to zero if it is the boundary of something having dimension one greater.

What is homology used for math?

homology, in mathematics, a basic notion of algebraic topology. Intuitively, two curves in a plane or other two-dimensional surface are homologous if together they bound a region—thereby distinguishing between an inside and an outside.

What is homology group answer choices?

homology, in biology, similarity of the structure, physiology, or development of different species of organisms based upon their descent from a common evolutionary ancestor.

What are the homologous elements?

Homologous structures are organs or skeletal elements of animals and organisms that, by virtue of their similarity, suggest their connection to a common ancestor. These structures do not have to look exactly the same, or have the same function.

What does homology mean in chemistry?

In chemistry, homologous pertains to a series of molecules or compounds that differ by a constant increment. For instance, alkanes are a homologous series of hydrocarbons: methane, ethane, propane, and so on. They have similar chemical properties that follow a trend.

What is...a (co)homology theory?

What is an example of homology?

An example of homologous structures are the limbs of humans, cats, whales, and bats. Regardless of whether it is an arm, leg, flipper or wing, these structures are built upon the same bone structure. Homologies are the result of divergent evolution.

What is homology Modelling in bioinformatics?

Homology modeling, also known as comparative modeling of protein, refers to constructing an atomic-resolution model of the "target" protein from its amino acid sequence and an experimental three-dimensional structure of a related homologous protein (the "template").

What does highly homologous mean?

adjective. having the same or a similar relation; corresponding, as in relative position or structure. corresponding in structure and in origin, but not necessarily in function: The wing of a bird and the foreleg of a horse are homologous.

Which of the following are most likely to be an example of a homology?

Following are some examples of homology: The arm of a human, the wing of a bird or a bat, the leg of a dog and the flipper of a dolphin or whale are homologous structures. They are different and have a different purpose, but they are similar and share common traits.

What is homology group used for?

When the underlying object has a geometric interpretation as topological spaces do, the nth homology group represents behavior in dimension n. Most homology groups or modules may be formulated as derived functors on appropriate abelian categories, measuring the failure of a functor to be exact.

How is homology used as evidence of evolution?

Homologous features

Physical features shared due to evolutionary history (a common ancestor) are said to be homologous. To give one classic example, the forelimbs of whales, humans, and birds look quite different on the outside. That's because they're adapted to function in different environments.

What are fins homologous to?

The paired fins in fish and limbs in tetrapods are a good example of homologous organs. They were derived from locomotive organs in common ancestors of vertebrates, and they share many developmental processes and genetic networks.

Is homology a chain complex?

Associated to a chain complex is its homology, which describes how the images are included in the kernels. A cochain complex is similar to a chain complex, except that its homomorphisms follow a different convention. The homology of a cochain complex is called its cohomology.

What is the difference between homology and Homoplasy?

Homology is similarity that reflects common descent and ancestry. Homoplasy is similarity (some might say superficial similarity) arrived at via independent evolution.

Are homology groups Abelian?

The term "homology group" usually means a singular homology group, which is an Abelian group which partially counts the number of holes in a topological space.

What is homologous and analogous?

Homologous structures share a similar embryonic origin; analogous organs have a similar function. For example, the bones in the front flipper of a whale are homologous to the bones in the human arm. ... The wings of a butterfly and the wings of a bird are analogous but not homologous.

How would you know if two chromosomes were homologous?

The two chromosomes in a homologous pair are very similar to one another and have the same size and shape. Most importantly, they carry the same type of genetic information: that is, they have the same genes in the same locations.

What make a good homology model?

If we define a "highly successful homology model" as one having <=2 Å rmsd from the empirical structure, then the template must have >=60% sequence identity with the target for a success rate >70%. Even at high sequence identities (60%-95%), as many as one in ten homology models have an rmsd >5 Å vs.

Why is homology Modelling used?

Homology modeling is one of the computational structure prediction methods that are used to determine protein 3D structure from its amino acid sequence. It is considered to be the most accurate of the computational structure prediction methods.

How do you perform a homology model?

1. template selection using your target sequence. For this purpose you can do BLASTp search against all available protein structures (PDBs). ...
2. Alignment of template and target sequence. ...
3. Quality of your model. ...
4. Refinement of your model accordingly.

What are the three types of homology?

Homology is the study of likeness, the similarity between species that results from inheritance of traits from a common ancestor. The study of similarities is broken up into three main categories: structural, developmental, and molecular homology.

What is homologous to a human arm?

A great example of homologous structures are the wings of a bat and the arms of a human. Bats and humans are both mammals, so they share a common ancestry. Both a bat's wing and a human's arm share a similar internal bone structure, even though they look very different externally.

Is a frog homologous or analogous?

Forelimbs of frogs and lizards are the example of homologous organs. Homologous structures are the anatomically similar structures that have a common ancestor. Even if they are superficially different, they are developmentally related.

What is homologous series Class 10?

> A homologous series is a series of hydrocarbons which have similar chemical properties and they share the same general formula. They are organic compounds having similar structure and functional groups. ... - They contain the same functional group throughout the series.
