A heatproof mat is a piece of apparatus commonly used in tabletop lab experiments that involve moderate temperatures to prevent damage to a work surface. They may also be used for domestic equipment, such as hair straighteners, hair dryers or other hot objects.

What is the point of a heatproof mat?

The primary purpose of a wire gauze mat is to support a container (such as a beaker or an Erlenmeyer flask) while it is being heated. The gauze mat also helps with an even distribution of heat as the bunsen burner flame passes through the gauze to the container.

What is mat in chemistry?

Students with a baccalaureate degree and interest in teaching may pursue the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) which simultaneously leads to certification AND master's degree.

What is a heatproof mat made of?

Traditionally, such mats were made of asbestos, often reinforced with a metal mesh, but fiberglass or other substitutes are now used because of the toxicity of asbestos fibres.

What is asbestos mat?

(æsˈbɛstɒs mæt) a heat-proof mat.

What is the Cool Mat and how does it work

What is Bunsen burner used for?

Bunsen burner, device for combining a flammable gas with controlled amounts of air before ignition; it produces a hotter flame than would be possible using the ambient air and gas alone.

What is the purpose of wire gauze?

Wire gauze is an important piece of supporting equipment in a laboratory as glassware cannot be heated directly with the flame of a Bunsen burner, and requires the use of a wire gauze to diffuse the heat, helping to protect the glassware. Glassware has to be flat-bottomed to stay on the wire gauze.

What does a clay triangle do?

Clay triangle

A triangular device made of heat-resistent clay. Used to hold crucibles and porcelain dishes heated by a Bunsen burner. Distributes heat evenly over the surface of objects it holds.

What does an iron ring do in chemistry?

Iron rings are commonly used in chemistry laboratories for supporting apparatus above the work surface, for example: a tapered item such as a filter funnel or separatory funnel. a clay triangle, which itself supports an item such as a crucible.

What does a watch glass do?

A watch glass is a round, concave glass dish used for evaporation in chemistry. It can also be employed for weighing solids and as a lid for flasks and beakers.

What is the air hole on a Bunsen burner?

There may also be a gas value on the Bunsen burner. The other critical component of a Bunsen burner is the air hole. This is located near the bottom of the chimney, just above the gas inlet. The air hole allows pre-mixing of air and gas before combustion occurs at the top of the chimney.

What is the blue flame on a Bunsen burner called?

It is called the safety flame. The medium flame, also called the blue flame or the invisible flame is difficult to see in a well-lit room. It is the most commonly used flame. It is approximately 500°C.

Who uses a Bunsen burner?

A Bunsen burner, named after Robert Bunsen, is a kind of gas burner used as laboratory equipment; it produces a single open gas flame, and is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion. The gas can be natural gas (which is mainly methane) or a liquefied petroleum gas, such as propane, butane, or a mixture.

What are the symptoms of asbestosis?

• shortness of breath.
• persistent cough.
• wheezing.
• extreme tiredness (fatigue)
• pain in your chest or shoulder.
• in more advanced cases, clubbed (swollen) fingertips.

Which flame is the loudest?

The blue inner flame burns the hottest, particularly at the tip. In addition to being the hottest flame, it is also the cleanest and loudest flame, making a kind of “roaring” sound.

What is the yellow flame used for?

A key warning sign that you require gas appliance servicing are yellow or red flames or a gas flame colour with a yellow burning tip.

Which part of flame is hottest?

The outer zone is the oxidizing zone. The coolest part of the flame is the middle zone and the hottest part is the tip of the inner.

When the air hole is closed?

Closed Air Hole

When the air hole is closed the natural gas can only mix with air at the mouth of the chimney. There is therefore not enough oxygen for complete combustion and incomplete combustion occurs.

What is a china dish?

China dish (or evaporating dish) is a glazed porcelain dish available in various sizes. ... It mainly used for boiling, evaporating solutions and crystallization of salts in chemistry laboratory. China dishes are made up of porcelain a ceramic material.

Can watch glass be used for heating?

A watch glass is a circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount of substance and as a cover for a beaker.

Can watch glass be heated?

Do not heat glassware directly on electrical heating elements. Excessive stress will be induced in the glass, and this can result in breakage.

What is a wash bottle used for?

A wash bottle is a squeeze bottle with a nozzle, used to rinse various pieces of laboratory glassware, such as test tubes and round bottom flasks.

What is a crucible and cover used for?

Crucible is used in the laboratory to contain chemical compounds when heated to extremely high temperatures. Crucibles are available in several sizes and typically come with a correspondingly-sized lid.
