Bitewing x-rays show the crowns of your molar and premolar teeth, and the height of the bone between your teeth, aiding in the diagnosis of cavities and periodontal disease.

Which teeth do Bitewings show?

Bitewing X-rays show details of the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. Each bitewing shows a tooth from its crown (the exposed surface) to the level of the supporting bone. Bitewing X-rays detect decay between teeth and changes in the thickness of bone caused by gum disease.

What is Bitewings dental?

Bitewings are one of the most common sets of X-rays. Bitewings show teeth above the gum line and the height of the bone between teeth. Bitewings help diagnose gum disease and cavities between teeth. The bitewing X-ray is placed on the tongue side of your teeth and held in place by biting down on a cardboard tab.

Do Bitewings show all teeth?

Do Bitewings show front teeth?

The panoramic machine's bitewings do not always show your front teeth, so if you're having a problem with front teeth, a different type of x-ray might be needed.) Periapical x-rays: traditionally a film or sensor was placed in the mouth near the tooth in question and you'd bite down on a plastic holder.

How to Take Bite Wing Dental X-Rays

What are the three types of dental images?

There are three types of diagnostic radiographs taken in today's dental offices -- periapical (also known as intraoral or wall-mounted), panoramic, and cephalometric. Periapical radiographs are probably the most familiar, with images of a few teeth at a time captured on small film cards inserted in the mouth.

Are Bitewings horizontal or vertical?

Based on intraoral film position, bitewings may be classified as horizontal and vertical. Objectives: Vertical bitewings often do not capture the distal of canine and also fail to open all interproximal tooth contacts thus requiring re-taking the radiograph.

Do Bitewings show periodontal disease?

Bitewings can also show areas of bone loss around teeth — a sign of periodontal disease; however, they are not taken for that purpose because bitewings will not show the complete root surface that is surrounded by bone.

What is bitewing film used for?

Bitewing radiographs provide an image of the crowns of the top and bottom teeth on a single film. The type of film used for this examination provides a high resolution image that is able to detect the subtle changes that occur with dental diseases.

Why is it called bitewing?

These X-rays are called bitewing because the paper or plastic tab attached to the film that you bite down on allows the film or digital sensor to hover between your bite in a similar fashion to an airplane wing.

How much radiation is in a bitewing?

One bitewing X-ray (the standard X-ray to check for cavities between the back teeth) is approximately 0.001 mSv of radiation.

What is the purpose of bitewing images?

The bitewing radiograph (BW) is an image that depicts the maxillary and mandibular crowns of the teeth, providing a clear image of the interproximal surfaces of the teeth and allowing for detection of interproximal caries.

What are Bitewings four films?

Bitewing images usually consist of four films, two on each side, which are necessary to capture all the back teeth — premolars and molars. Often only one bitewing image per side is required in smaller children.

Can a dentist pull an infected tooth?

If the affected tooth can't be saved, your dentist will pull (extract) the tooth and drain the abscess to get rid of the infection. Prescribe antibiotics. If the infection is limited to the abscessed area, you may not need antibiotics.

How do you fix bitewing overlap?

Horizontal overlap is a result of the X-ray beam not passing through the open interproximal area at right angles to a properly positioned detector. Correcting this error on bitewings can usually be achieved by inclining the tubehead in a more mesial or distal direction.

Can dental Xrays show bone loss?

Dental x-rays show minimal bone loss around the patient's dentition. The symptoms of periodontitis become more severe as inflammation spreads, and some discomfort may occur. More supporting bone is lost, teeth loosen, and the gums recede further. Dental x-rays show progressive bone loss around teeth.

What is a horizontal bitewing?

Horizontal bitewings — Traditional film used for diagnosing interproximal decay. Horizontal bitewings provide a great view of the interproximal tooth surfaces and, because of the angle, an adequate view of the density of periodontal bone structure.

How do you test for interproximal caries?

Logicon is a new, revolutionary digital diagnostic tool for finding interproximal caries. It highlights suspicious regions in the radiographs and analytically reads the density level changes in the interproximal areas of the radiographs, giving a probability measure of the caries depth into enamel and dentin.

What landmarks should be seen on a bitewing radiograph?

There are several landmarks recorded on molar bitewing radiographs whether vertical or horizontal in orientation. The most common structures observed are the external oblique ridge and maxillary tuberosity.

When are Bitewings and periapical images prescribed?

For the adolescent at high risk of caries, the guidelines recommend bitewings at 6- to 12-month intervals; for the high risk adult, at 12- to 18-month intervals.

Which of the following is used for interproximal evaluation?

The most widely used method to evaluate interproximal contacts is to pass dental floss between contact areas. Candidates for licensure exams are instructed to check contact areas with dental floss and are advised that this will be one of the crucial parameters to be evaluated in the overall restoration quality.

What are the three types of intraoral imaging examinations?

Intraoral radiographic examination is the backbone of imaging for the general dental practitioner. It comprises of three categories: periapical, bitewing and occlusal projections.
