Phosphate Backbone DNA consists of two strands that wind around each other like a twisted ladder. Each strand has a backbone made of alternating sugar (deoxyribose) and phosphate groups. Attached to each sugar is one of four bases--adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), or thymine (T).

What makes up the backbone of DNA quizlet?

The backbone is comprised of alternating pairs of Sugars (Deoxyribose) and Phosphate groups. The rungs of DNA are comprised of pairs of Nitrogenous Bases. These bonds hold the nitrogen bases together.

What parts of nucleotide make up the backbone of DNA and MRNA?

The sugar and phosphate make up the backbone, while the nitrogen bases are found in the center and hold the two strands together. The nitrogen bases can only pair in a certain way: A pairing with T and C pairing with G. This is called base pairing.

What are the three parts of a nucleotide which parts make up the backbone of a DNA strand?

• five carbon sugar aka deoxyribose.
• phosphate group.
• nitrogen base (adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine)

Is the backbone of DNA hydrophobic?

The negative charge of the backbone, along with the OH-groups on the deoxyribose sugar, means that the backbone is Hydrophillic as water can form hydrogen bonds with it. The centre of the DNA molecule is hydrophobic due to the lack of charge in DNA bases.

MCAT Question of the Day: The DNA Backbone and Phosphodiester Bonds

What type of molecules make up the backbone uprights of ladder of DNA?

They showed that alternating deoxyribose and phosphate molecules form the twisted uprights of the DNA ladder.

What chemicals make up the sides or backbone of the DNA molecule quizlet?

alternating sugar and phosphate molecules form the sides or "backbone" of the DNA molecule.

What is DNA made up of quizlet?

DNA is made up of two strands of nucleotides. The nucleotides are made up of a sugar (deoxyribose in DNA), a phosphate, and a nitrogen base. The sugars and phosphates make up the "handrails" (or "backbone"), and are held together by covalent bonds.

What is DNA made up of?

DNA is a linear molecule composed of four types of smaller chemical molecules called nucleotide bases: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). The order of these bases is called the DNA sequence.

What part of the nucleotide makes up the backbone of the helix?

The sugar and phosphate group make up the backbone of the DNA double helix, while the bases are located in the middle. A chemical bond between the phosphate group of one nucleotide and the sugar of a neighboring nucleotide holds the backbone together.

Which of the following makes up DNA?

DNA is made up of molecules called nucleotides. Each nucleotide contains a phosphate group, a sugar group and a nitrogen base. The four types of nitrogen bases are adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C).

What parts make up the sides of DNA?

The sides of the ladder are made of alternating sugar and phosphate molecules. The sugar is deoxyribose. The rungs of the ladder are pairs of 4 types of nitrogen bases. Two of the bases are purines- adenine and guanine.

What molecules make up the sides of the DNA molecule?

It consists of just a few kinds of atoms: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Combinations of these atoms form the sugar-phosphate backbone of the DNA -- the sides of the ladder, in other words. Other combinations of the atoms form the four bases: thymine (T), adenine (A), cytosine (C), and guanine (G).

What makes up the sides of a DNA molecule quizlet?

The basic structural unit of DNA is made of a phosphate group, a sugar and a nitrogen base. Makes up the sides of the DNA 'ladder', alternating sugar-phosphate-sugar-phosphate. There are 4 different bases - A, C, T and G that make up the middle of the Double helix. ... All of an organism's DNA information.

What 2 molecules make up the uprights?

A DNA molecule is "ladderlike'' in shape. Deoxyribose and phosphoric acid molecules join to form the sides or uprights of the ladder.

What makes up the steps of the DNA ladder?

The inside of the molecule, the "steps" of the staircase, are made of the nucleotide bases Cytosine, Guanine, Adenine, and Thymine. ... To replicate, the DNA molecule unzips along the hydrogen bonds. The single stranded templates dictate which bases get laid down. In this way, one DNA strand can become two.

What substances make up the backbone composition of DNA check all that apply?

What is the "backbone" of DNA composed of? Phosphate molecules and deoxyribose sugar. DNA backbones are made up of deoxyribose, a pentose sugar. These sugars are connected via a phosphodiester bond.

What holds the sides of DNA ladder together?

The two sides of the DNA ladder are held together loosely by hydrogen bonds. Color the hydrogen bonds gray.

What holds the sides of the DNA ladder together quizlet?

The two strands of DNA are held together with hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen bases. These are weak bonds between polar molecules.

What holds the rungs of the DNA ladder together?

DNA Bonds. Adenine bonds with thymine and guanine bonds with cytosine. The molecules are joined together by hydrogen bonds. ... The molecular structures of the nitrogenous bases ensure that the rungs of the DNA ladder are made of either an adenine-thymine pair or a guanine-cytosine pair.

What bonds hold the backbone of DNA together?

Bases are held together by hydrogen bonds, and the DNA backbone is held together by phosphodiester bonds.

Which of the following make up the backbone of a polynucleotide strand?

A polynucleotide strand is made of a sugar-phosphate backbone (like the string in a strand of flags) and a variety of bases (like the flags), one per nucleotide. A polynucleotide is made when a polymerase enzyme joins nucleotides together. The strand has two different ends, which we call 3' and 5'.

What are the 6 components of DNA?

(The Double Helix)

DNA is made up of six smaller molecules -- a five carbon sugar called deoxyribose, a phosphate molecule and four different nitrogenous bases (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine).

Which of the following is a nucleotide that makes up DNA?

A nucleotide consists of a sugar molecule (either ribose in RNA or deoxyribose in DNA) attached to a phosphate group and a nitrogen-containing base. The bases used in DNA are adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T). In RNA, the base uracil (U) takes the place of thymine.

What in DNA determines how proteins are made?

DNA carries the genetic information for making proteins. ... The base sequence determines amino acid sequence in protein. Messenger RNA (mRNA) is a molecule which carries a copy of the code from the DNA, in the nucleus, to a ribosome, where the protein is assembled from amino acids.
