The transpyloric plane, also known as Addison's plane, is an imaginary horizontal plane, located halfway between the suprasternal notch of the manubrium and the upper border of the symphysis pubis at the level of the first lumbar vertebrae, L1.

What is meant by transpyloric plane?

The transpyloric plane, also known as Addison's plane, is an imaginary axial plane located midway between the jugular notch and superior border of pubic symphysis, at approximately the level of L1 vertebral body.

What is the transpyloric plane used for?

The transpyloric plane is clinically notable because it passes through several important abdominal structures. It also divides the supracolic and infracolic compartments, with the liver, spleen and gastric fundus above it and the small intestine and colon below it.

Is transpyloric plane and Subcostal plane same?

Transpyloric plane. The subcostal plane is a transverse plane which bisects the body at the level of the 10th costal margin and the vertebra body L3.

Why is it called Transtubercular plane?

A lower transverse line midway between the upper transverse and the upper border of the pubic symphysis; this is termed the intertubercular plane (or transtubercular), since it practically corresponds to that passing through the iliac tubercles; behind, its plane cuts the body of the fifth lumbar vertebra.

Where is Transpyloric line?

Anatomical Parts

Of the horizontal planes the upper or transpyloric is indicated by a line encircling the body at the level of a point midway between the jugular notch and the symphysis pubis, the lower by a line carried around the trunk at the level of a point midway between the transpyloric and the symphysis pubis.

Where is Subcostal?

The subcostal muscle has variable anatomy and forms part of the intercostal muscle group. It lies on the deep surface of the innermost intercostal muscle in the posterior chest, near the angles of the ribs, usually running over 2-3 intercostal spaces.

What is Subcostal area?

sub·cos·tal plane

[TA] a transverse plane passing through the inferior limits of the costal margin, that is, the tenth costal cartilages; it marks the boundary between the hypochondriac and epigastric regions superiorly and the lateral and umbilical regions inferiorly.

Where is the Subcostal plane?

n. A horizontal plane passing through the lower limits of the tenth costal cartilages, marking the boundary between the hypochondriac and epigastric regions and between the lateral and umbilical regions.

How do you split your stomach into 9 regions?

divided into 9 regions by two vertical and two horizontal imaginary planes.
...
Four abdominal quadrants

1. right upper quadrant fossa (RUQ)
2. right lower quadrant fossa (RLQ)
3. left lower quadrant fossa (LLQ)
4. left upper quadrant fossa (LUQ)

Where is the median plane?

Median plane - Sagittal plane through the midline of the body; divides the body or any of its parts into right and left halves.

What is duodenal point?

The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine (5-7 m), followed by the jejunum and ileum (in that order); it is also the widest and shortest (25 cm) part of the small intestine. The duodenum is a C-shaped or horseshoe-shaped structure that lies in the upper abdomen near the midline (see the image below). ^[1,2]

What is at the level of L1?

The L1 vertebra (1st lumbar vertebra) is the smallest and most superior of the lumbar vertebrae. As the first vertebra in the lumbar region, the L1 vertebra bears the weight of the upper body and acts as a transition between the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.

What vertebral level is gallbladder?

The lowest point of the gallbladder, according to Eycleshymer and Schoemaker, varies from the upper third of the twelfth thoracic vertebra to the upper third of the fourth lumbar vertebra. The average position is at the level of the lower third of the second lumbar vertebra.

What are abdominal planes?

The 9 abdominal regions used in the physician's exam. The horizontal planes include the subcostal plane, which joins the most inferior parts of the rib cage – usually the 10th costal cartilage – and the transtubercular plane, which joins the two tubercles of the iliac crests.

What does the word subcostal mean?

: situated or performed below a rib a left subcostal incision. subcostal. noun.

Where is right subcostal area?

The liver is located in the right side of the subcostal region and its main and collateral meridians distribute to both sides. The gallbladder attaches to the liver. Thus, the main pathology of subcostal pain related to the liver and the gallbladder.

Where is the Hypogastric region?

Hypogastric. The hypogastric region (below the stomach) contains the organs around the pubic bone. These include bladder, part of the sigmoid colon, the anus, and many organs of the reproductive system, such as the uterus and ovaries in females and the prostate in males.

What is Subcostal nerve?

The subcostal nerve is a mixed nerve, meaning that it carries both motor and sensory fibers. Its main function is to supply innervation to the portion of the skin overlying the abdominal wall, abdominal muscles and parietal peritoneum.

How many Subcostal arteries are there?

There are eleven posterior intercostal arteries and they arise from two sources: The first and second posterior intercostal arteries originate from the superior (supreme) intercostal artery, a branch of the costocervical trunk.

Which body plane could be used to separate the stomach from the liver?

coronal plane: Any vertical plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior (belly and back) sections.

How do you identify the 9th costal cartilage?

The xiphoid. The costal margin extends from the 7th costal cartilage at the xiphoid to the tip of the 12th rib (although the latter is often difficult to feel); this margin bears a distinct step, which is the tip of the 9th costal cartilage.

What is the Supracristal plane?

Supracristal plane (Planum supracristale) (or supracrestal plane) is an anatomical transverse plane lying at the upper most part of the pelvis, the iliac crest. This is usually at the level of the L4 vertebrae. It passes through the umbilical region and the left and right lumbar regions.
