It is thick and strong, limiting hyperflexion of the neck. In quadriped animals, it is very strong and functions in keeping the neck and head of the animal up. The ligamentum nuchae consists of the dorsal raphe and medial septal parts. The dorsal raphe attaches to muscles while the medial septum does not.

What is ligamentum nuchae?

The ligamentum nuchal is a fibrous membrane, which, in the neck, represents the supraspinal ligaments of the lower vertebræ. It extends from the external occipital protuberance and median nuchal line to the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra.

What does ligamentum nuchae limit?

Here's the nuchal ligament, also called the ligamentum nuchae. It's a sheet of strong fibrous tissue that extends from the spinous process of the first thoracic vertebra, to the external occipital protuberance. The nuchal ligament limits forward flexion of the head and the cervical spine.

What muscle originates from the ligamentum nuchae?

The ligamentum nuchae is formed primarily from the aponeurotic attachments of the adjacent and subjacent musculature. From superficial to deep, these muscles are the trapezius; rhomboideus minor; splenius capitis; and the serratus posterior superior.

What does ligamentum nuchae mean in medical terms?

Medical Definition of ligamentum nuchae

: a medium ligament of the back of the neck that is rudimentary in humans but highly developed and composed of yellow elastic tissue in many quadrupeds where it assists in supporting the head.

Ligaments of Vertebral Column Anatomy (Nuchal, Interspinous, Supraspinous)

Where does the ligamentum nuchae attach?

Attachments. Extends from the external occipital protuberance on the skull and median nuchal line, to the spinous process of C7. The deep fibers of the ligament attach to the external occipital crest, the posterior tubercle of the atlas, and to the medial surface of the bifid processes of the other cervical vertebrae.

What type of tissue is ligamentum nuchae?

Elastic Connective Tissue - the ligamentum nuchae is an example of elastic connective tissue. The ligamentum nuchae is a ligament at the back of the neck. It is dense regular connective tissue with both collagen and elastic fibers.

What does the Splenius capitis do?

Function. Bilaterally, the splenius capitis muscles extend and hyper-extend the head and neck. However, acting unilaterally, the muscle flexes and rotates the head and neck to the same side; particularly in the superior and inferior lateral oblique movements.

What is nuchal ligament calcification?

Ossification of the nuchal ligament (ONL) is a radio-opaque formation in the soft tissues behind the spinous processes of the cervical spine. ... Therefore, being similar to the ossification of other spinal ligaments, ONL may be a coexisting disorder or may be a risk factor of other cervical degenerative diseases.

How do you treat ligamentum flavum thickening?

The current treatment approach for LF thickening includes operative and nonoperative treatment. Operative treatment includes such procedures as excision of the LF, decompressive laminectomy, and minimally invasive decompression.

Do cervical ligaments heal?

Neck sprains, like other sprains, will usually heal gradually, given time and appropriate treatment. You may have to wear a soft collar around your neck to help support the head and relieve pressure on the ligaments so they have time to heal.

What does the Supraspinous ligament do?

The supraspinous ligament helps maintain the upright position of the head. It's stretched in flexion, it`s fibers resist separation of spinous processes during forward flexion, during hyperflexion interspinous ligament and supraspinous ligament are the first to fail.

Can you feel your nuchal ligament?

You should be able to easily feel the nuchal ligament in your neck (I could not due to the restrictions in surrounding tissues.) Extend your head backward and press your fingers on the midline of the back of your neck.

Can humans eat paddywack?

Usage. It is eaten in several countries. It is high in protein (78%) and also contains fat (10%), crude fibre (0.7%), and crude ash (1%).

What supplies blood to the splenius capitis?

Blood Supply

Muscular branches of the occipital artery from the external carotid artery.

What is your Sternocleidomastoid?

Sternocleidomastoid is the most superficial and largest muscle in the front portion of the neck. It is also known as SCM or Sternomastoid or Sterno muscle. The name has the origin of the Latin words: sternon = chest; cleido=clavicle and the Greek words: mastos= breast and eidos=shape, form.

What is longissimus capitis?

Longissimus capitis is the part of the longest muscle of the neck, which serves to rotate the head from side to side and extend the head.

What passes through intervertebral foramina?

The foramen allows for the passage of the spinal nerve root, dorsal root ganglion, the spinal artery of the segmental artery, communicating veins between the internal and external plexuses, recurrent meningeal (sinu-vertebral) nerves, and transforaminal ligaments.

What is the function of the posterior longitudinal ligament?

The posterior longitudinal ligament connects and stabilizes the bones of the spinal column. It runs almost the entire length of the spine, from the 2nd vertebra in the cervical spine (neck) all the way down to the sacrum (end of the spine). The ligament is adjacent to the spinal cord.

Why are cervical vertebrae prone to dislocation in whiplash injuries?

Anterior longitudinal ligament injuries in whiplash may lead to cervical instability. They explain that during the retraction phase that is when the actual "whiplash" occurs, since there is an unusual loading of soft tissues.

How do you fix a torn ligament in your neck?

Your doctor may prescribe a soft collar worn around the neck to help support the head and relieve pressure on ligaments, tendons and muscles while they heal. Other treatment options include massaging the tender area, ultrasound, cervical (neck) traction, and aerobic or isometric exercise.

What does a torn ligament in neck feel like?

A torn neck muscle may feel like a sharp, stabbing pain in the neck area. You may have a limited range of motion or feel a dull, achy pain in the neck area. Other common symptoms of a torn neck muscle include localized swelling, soreness, “knots”, stiffness, or weakness.
