The median glossoepiglottic fold divides the space between the tongue and the epiglottis into two sacs, the valleculae ( Fig. 14-5 ; see Fig. 14-1 ). The lateral glossoepiglottic folds form the lateral walls of the valleculae.

What is lateral glossoepiglottic fold?

lat·er·al glos·so·ep·i·glot·tic fold. [TA] the fold of mucous membrane that extends from the margin of the epiglottis to the pharyngeal wall and base of the tongue on each side, forming the lateral boundary of the epiglottic valleculae.

What is Glossoepiglottic?

[ glô′sō-ĕp′ĭ-glŏt′ĭk ] adj. Relating to the tongue and the epiglottis.

What do the glossoepiglottic folds connect?

The hyoepiglottic ligament connects the epiglottis to the back of the body of the hyoid bone. The mucous membrane that covers the anterior aspect of the epiglottis sweeps forward to the tongue as the median glossoepiglottic fold and to the pharynx as the paired lateral pharyngoepiglottic folds.

How many glossoepiglottic folds are there?

The anterior or lingual surface of the epiglottis is curved forward, and covered on its upper, free part by mucous membrane which is reflected on to the sides and root of the tongue, forming a median and two lateral glossoepiglottic folds; the lateral folds are partly attached to the wall of the pharynx.

What is the function of Valleculae?

The epiglottic vallecula is a depression (vallecula) just behind the root of the tongue between the folds in the throat. These depressions serve as "spit traps"; saliva is temporarily held in the valleculae to prevent initiation of the swallowing reflex.

What is the function of the laryngeal skeleton?

Laryngeal Skeleton

These are connected by ligaments and moved by numerous muscles. The movements of the laryngeal skeleton open and close the glottis and regulate the degree of tension in the vocal folds. When air passes through the folds, they produce sound. Tension levels control pitch and volume.

What structure is located between the Glossoepiglottic folds in the posterior oropharynx?

posterior to the torus tubaris. forms the boundary between the oral cavity and oropharynx. Palatine tonsil is located between the palatoglossal fold and palatopharyngeal fold.

What is the function of epiglottis 7?

The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located behind the tongue, at the top of the larynx, or voice box. The main function of the epiglottis is to seal off the windpipe during eating, so that food is not accidentally inhaled.

What do vestibular folds do?

The vestibular folds of the larynx play a significant role in the maintenance of the laryngeal functions of breathing and preventing food and drink from entering the airway during swallowing. They aid phonation (speech) by suppressing dysphonia.

What is the Aryepiglottic fold?

Abstract. The aryepiglottic folds extend between the arytenoid cartilage and the lateral margin of the epiglottis on each side and constitute the lateral borders of the laryngeal inlet. They are involved in physiologic closure mechanisms of the larynx and in pathologic conditions such as inspiratory stridor.

What is the vallecula?

The vallecula is the air pocket found at the level of the hyoid bone just anterior to the epiglottis. ... The "vallecula sign of epiglottitis" is present when the normal deep linear air space from the tongue base almost to the epiglottis is made shallow or obliterated.

What is laryngeal pharynx?

description. In pharynx. The third region is the laryngeal pharynx, which begins at the epiglottis and leads down to the esophagus. Its function is to regulate the passage of air to the lungs and food to the esophagus.

What is pharyngeal isthmus?

isthmus of pharynx

passage posterior to the soft palate by which the nasopharynx and oropharynx communicate (i.e., the junction of nasopharynx and oropharynx), closed during swallowing by elevation of the soft palate and contraction of the posterior fascicle of palatopharyngeus (muscle), forming a Passavant cushion.

Where is Laryngopharynx located?

Where is the Laryngopharynx located? Posterior to the larynx, from the superior border of the epiglottis and pharynx-epiglottis folds to the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage.

What is the Vallecula in the throat?

The valleculae are essentially potential spaces, seen as depressions anterior to the epiglottis, forming the floor of the oropharynx and serve to collect the saliva. The median glossoepiglottic fold separates the two, and laterally, the valleculae are bound by the lateral glossoepiglottic folds.

What is the main functions of epiglottis?

The epiglottis is usually upright at rest allowing air to pass into the larynx and lungs. When a person swallows the epiglottis folds backward to cover the entrance of the larynx so food and liquid do not enter the windpipe and lungs. After swallowing the epiglottis returns to its original upright position.

What is the function of epiglottis 10?

Answer: At the top of the trachea (or wind pipe) there is a flap of cartilage called epiglottis. The function of epiglottis is to cover the mouth of trachea (or wind pipe) when we swallow food so that the food may not enter the trachea (or wind pipe).

What is the function of epiglottis during the pharyngeal stage?

During the pharyngeal phase, the tongue seals the oropharynx. The soft palate and proximal pharyngeal wall seal off the nasopharynx. The vocal cords and arytenoids close off the laryngeal opening and the epiglottis swings down to cover the laryngeal vestibule. These actions seal the airway from the pharyngeal cavity.

Which structure forms the lower border of the oropharynx?

The oropharynx is bordered inferiorly by the vallecula. The posterior border of the oropharynx is formed by the posterior pharyngeal wall.

What is nasopharynx oropharynx?

The nasopharynx represents the most superior portion of the pharynx, bounded superiorly by the skull base and inferiorly by the soft palate. The nasopharynx connects the nasal cavity to the oropharynx and contains the Eustachian tube openings and adenoids.

What muscles close vocal folds?

Vocal ligament: The vocal ligament is composed of:Body: The vocal fold body is composed of the thyroarytenoid muscle. This muscle helps close the glottis and regulate tension of vocal fold during speaking and/or singing. The medial portion of this muscle is also called “vocalis muscle.”

What is the lateral Cricoarytenoid?

The lateral cricoarytenoid (also anterior cricoarytenoid) muscles extend from the lateral cricoid cartilage to the muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage. By rotating the arytenoid cartilages medially, these muscles adduct the vocal cords and thereby close the rima glottidis, protecting the airway.

What are vocal folds?

The vocal cords (also called vocal folds) are 2 bands of smooth muscle tissue found in the voice box (larynx). The larynx is set in the neck at the top of the windpipe (trachea). The vocal cords vibrate and air passes through the cords from the lungs to make the sound of your voice.
