The common extensor tendon is a tough band of fibrous connective tissue that attaches to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus (long bone in the upper arm) at the elbow. Rupture or tear of the common extensor tendon is the most common acute tendon injury of the elbow.

What are the common extensor muscles?

The extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and longus, extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, and extensor carpi ulnaris come together to form the common extensor tendon. The extensor carpi radialis brevis is almost always the primary tendon involved.

What is the extensor tendon?

Extensor tendons run just underneath the skin along the back of the hands and wrists. They control the hand's ability to straighten the fingers and wrists.

What muscles attach to the common extensor tendon of lateral epicondyle?

Classically in the literature, a common extensor tendon is described as attaching to the lateral epicondyle and consisting of the tendons of the ECRB, EDC, extensor digiti minimi, and humeral head of the extensor carpi ulnaris muscles [2–4].

What is common extensor tendinopathy?

Common extensor tendinopathy is an overuse injury due to excessive loading occurring from repeated wrist extension against resistance. This occurs in sports such as tennis and badminton as well as manual occupations such as bricklaying and carpentry as well as other hobbies such as sewing and knitting.

Elbow: Common Extensor Tear - SonoSite Case Study

What causes common extensor tendon tear?

Causes of Common Extensor Tendon Origin Rupture

Common causes may include: Activity that requires repetitive motion of the forearm such as painting, typing, weaving, gardening, lifting heavy objects, and sports. Overuse of the forearm muscles. Direct trauma as with a fall, work injury, or motor vehicle accident.

How thick is the common extensor tendon?

In the capitellar region of the dominant elbow, the cut-off thickness was 5.15 mm, and in the radiocapitellar region, this value was 4.05 mm. For the non-dominant elbow, the cut-off thickness was 4.61 mm, whereas in the radiocapitellar region, this value was 3.51 mm.

What attaches to common extensor tendon?

The common extensor tendon is a tendon that attaches to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.

What is the common flexor tendon?

The common flexor tendon is a tendon that attaches to the medial epicondyle of the humerus (lower part of the bone of the upper arm that is near the elbow joint). It serves as the upper attachment point for the superficial muscles of the front of the forearm: Flexor carpi ulnaris.

Where is extensor tendon foot?

The extensor tendons in your feet attach the muscles at the front of your legs to the toes and run across the top of your feet with very little padding to protect them from a variety of injuries. These tendons have an important job and are in vulnerable locations.

Where is the extensor tendon located?

Extensor tendons are just under the skin, directly on the bone, on the back of the hands and fingers. Because of their location, they can be easily injured even by a minor cut.

Where is the extensor tendon in the finger?

Extensor tendons are just under the skin. They lie next to the bone on the back of the hands and fingers and straighten the wrist, fingers and thumb (Figure 1). They can be injured by a minor cut or jamming a finger, which may cause the thin tendons to rip from their attachment to bone.

What muscles make up the common flexor tendon?

1, 2, 3, 4 The common flexor tendon is the convergence of 5 muscles: pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis, and flexor carpi ulnaris.

What is the prime extensor of the forearm?

The extensor carpi radialis brevis is an extensor muscle in the posterior superficial compartment of the forearm. It is the prime dorsiflexor of the wrist. ... The extensor carpi radialis brevis shares a common synovial sheath with extensor carpi radialis longus.

What is the extensor digitorum muscle?

The extensor digitorum communis is a superficial extensor muscle located in the posterior compartment of the forearm. It shares a common synovial tendon sheaths along with other extensor muscles which helps to reduce friction between the tendon and the surrounding structures.

What is common flexor origin?

Gross anatomy

The common flexor origin is a thick tendinous structure originating from the medial epicondyle ^1-3 splitting in anterosuperior and posteroinferior common tendinous portions.

What is extensor carpi radialis longus?

The extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) is a muscle in your forearm that works in conjunction with the other muscles and tendons in your arm to help move your wrist and hand.

What is extensor carpi radialis brevis?

The extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle aids in moving the hand. Specifically, it abducts and extends the hand at the wrist joint. ... The muscle originates along the lateral supracondylar ridge, which is a narrow, raised region of the humerus. It inserts into the third metacarpal of the hand.

What is common extensor origin?

The common extensor origin is a flat tendinous structure originating from the anterolateral surface of the lateral epicondyle and is found just distal to the origin of extensor carpi radialis longus muscle (ECRL) ^1-3.

What causes a tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is mostly caused by overusing your forearm due to a repetitive or strenuous activity. It can also sometimes occur after banging or knocking your elbow. If the muscles in your forearm are strained, tiny tears and inflammation can develop near the bony lump (lateral epicondyle) on the outside of your elbow.

How do you fix a torn tendon in your elbow?

1. make one or more small incisions (cuts) in the skin over the damaged tendon.
2. sew the torn ends of the tendon together.
3. check the surrounding tissue to make sure no other injuries have occurred, such as injury to the blood vessels or nerves.
4. close the incision.

What is CET in ultrasound?

Purpose: The aim is to examine the common extensor tendon (CET) thicknesses at three locations in the normal population with ultrasound (US), to determine changes related to dominancy, age, gender, body mass index and to evaluate structural changes in normal tendons.

What muscle is affected by tennis elbow?

The tendon most likely involved in tennis elbow is called the extensor carpi radialis brevis.

Which common elbow pathology is often caused by repetitive wrist extension?

Tennis elbow primarily results from the repetitive strain caused by activities that involve loaded and repeated gripping and/or wrist extension. It is common in individuals who play tennis, squash, badminton, or any activity involving repetitive wrist extension, radial deviation, and/or forearm supination.
