A major wind belt that circles the Earth, in that easterly winds generated by the polar high converge with westerly winds from the subtropical high, at the subpolar low pressure belt, at about 60° latitude.

Why is subpolar pressure low?

This is due to the spherical shape of the earth—different parts of the earth are heated unequally. ... In the Subpolar region around latitudes 60° to 65° North and South of the Equator, the rotation of the earth pushes up the bulk of the air towards the Equator, creating a low-pressure belt in this region.

What is subpolar low pressure belts?

A band of low pressure located, in the mean, between 50° and 70° latitude. In the Northern Hemisphere, this belt consists of the Aleutian low and the Icelandic low. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is supposed to exist around the periphery of the Antarctic continent.

What is the subpolar low polar front?

The subpolar low (polar front) is. a zone where the polar easterlies and the westerlies converge. The major features of precipitation distribution patterns are determined by. general circulation and pressure patterns.

Where is equatorial low?

Near the equator the sea level pressure is low and the area is known as equatorial low. Along 30° N and 30° S are found the high-pressure areas known as the subtropical highs. Further pole wards along 60° N and 60° S, the low-pressure belts are termed as the sub polar lows.

Is the equator high or low pressure?

Equatorial regions is hotter and the air above expands, becomes less dense and rises. This produces a low pressure belt at this latitude.

What is equatorial low pressure trough?

The quasi-continuous belt of low pressure lying between the subtropical high pressure belts of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This entire region is one of very homogeneous air, probably the most ideally barotropic region of the atmosphere.

What is a subpolar front?

The front associated with the NAC is called the Subpolar (or Subarctic) Front (Belkin & Levitus 1996). ... The fronts are associated with vigorous vertical velocities (bringing nutrients to the surface) and some horizontal exchange, especially southward from the subpolar region (Dutkiewicz et al. 2001).

What is the meaning of subpolar?

subpolar in British English

(sʌbˈpəʊlə) adjective. geography. of or relating to the areas south of the Arctic and north of the Antarctic.

What are subpolar regions?

The region that lies between the high-latitude boundary of the *tundra and the high-latitude boundary of cool-temperate or cool desert vegetation.... ...

What is Aleutian low pressure?

Aleutian Low

A semi-permanent, subpolar area of low pressure located in the Gulf of Alaska near the Aleutian Islands. It is a generating area for storms and migratory lows often reach maximum instensity in this area. It is most active during the late fall to late spring.

What latitude is a subpolar low?

A major wind belt that circles the Earth, in that easterly winds generated by the polar high converge with westerly winds from the subtropical high, at the subpolar low pressure belt, at about 60° latitude.

What is the normal air pressure at sea level?

(atm) unit of measurement equal to air pressure at sea level, about 14.7 pounds per square inch. Also called standard atmospheric pressure.

Why is there low pressure at the equator?

Cold air, being more dense, sinks and hot air, being less dense, rises. Consequently, the rising warm air at the equator becomes even less dense as it rises and its pressure decreases. An area of low pressure, therefore, exists over the equator.

Which pressure belt is nightmare for Ancient Mariner?

Answer: In ancient time mariners were dependent on air to sail the ship. In this belt there was very low air pressure which was not enough to push the ship this is the reason that in ancient time Equatorial low pressure belt was nightmare for mariners.

Why does the temperate zone have low pressure?

Low pressure develops when air rises. ... The rest travels towards the higher latitudes, delivering warm air masses to the temperate regions of the world at 50 to 60° latitude. Here they collide with cold polar air, and the warm air is forced to rise, developing a zone of low pressure.

Where is the subpolar region?

The subarctic zone is a region in the Northern Hemisphere immediately south of the true Arctic and covering much of Alaska, Canada, Iceland, the north of Scandinavia, Siberia, the Shetland Islands, and the Cairngorms. Generally, subarctic regions fall between 50°N and 70°N latitude, depending on local climates.

Is subpar one word?

Since sub- means "below", almost anything that fails to measure up to a traditional standard may be called subpar. So you may hear of subpar ratings for a TV show, subpar care at a nursing home, subpar attendance at a concert, or subpar work by a contractor.

What are polar regions?

The regions of the Earth designated as polar are those areas located between the North or South Pole and the Arctic or Antarctic Circles, respectively. The northern polar region, called the Arctic, encompasses the Arctic Ocean and a portion of some surrounding land masses.

Is the subpolar gyre cyclonic?

The subpolar gyres are cyclonic circulation features. ... In the North Pacific the subpolar gyre is composed of the northward-flowing Alaska Current, the Aleutian Current (also known as the Subarctic Current), and the southward-flowing cold Oyashio Current.

Why are subpolar gyres important?

Subpolar gyres

This drives the Ekman transport, which creates an upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the lower depths. Subpolar circulation in the southern hemisphere is dominated by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, due to the lack of large landmasses breaking up the Southern Ocean.

How many subpolar gyres are there?

Taken together, these larger and more permanent currents make up the systems of currents known as gyres. There are five major gyres: the North and South Pacific Subtropical Gyres, the North and South Atlantic Subtropical Gyres, and the Indian Ocean Subtropical Gyre.

What are equatorial westerlies?

Quick Reference. The westerly winds that sometimes develop within the equatorial trough when the Intertropical Convergence Zone is well north or south of the Equator. The north-easterly or south-easterly trade winds cross the Equator and, because of the reversal of the Coriolis effect, acquire a westerly component.

What is true about ITCZ?

The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterised by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas.

Why is ITCZ important?

It moves north in the Northern Hemisphere summer and south in the Northern Hemisphere winter. Therefore, the ITCZ is responsible for the wet and dry seasons in the tropics. The sun crosses the equator twice a year in March and September, and consequently makes for two wet seasons each year.
