Sodium borohydride, also known as sodium tetrahydridoborate and sodium tetrahydroborate, is an inorganic compound with the formula NaBH₄. This white solid, usually encountered as a powder, is a reducing agent that finds application in chemistry, both in the laboratory and on an industrial scale.

What is sodium borohydride used for?

Sodium Borohydride is a white, odorless powder or pellet. It is used for bleaching wood pulp, as a blowing agent for plastics, and as a reducing agent for aldehydes and ketones.

What is sodium borohydride made of?

In the Brown-Schlesinger process sodium borohydride is industrially prepared from sodium hydride (produced by reacting Na and H₂) and trimethyl borate at 250–270 °C: B(OCH₃)₃ + 4 NaH → NaBH₄ + 3 NaOCH. Millions of kilograms are produced annually, far exceeding the production levels of any other hydride reducing agent.

Is sodium borohydride a salt?

Sodium borohydride is an inorganic sodium salt and a metal tetrahydridoborate.

Is NaBH4 a catalyst?

The recent development of the NaBH4-PEMFC system lies in the development of a sodium borohydride hydrolysis catalyst, the design of a hydrogen production device, and the optimization of the system performance. This has resulted in sodium borohydride becoming the first choice of new hydrogen generation sources.

Sodium Borohydride NaBH4 Reduction Reaction Mechanism

How do you quench sodium borohydride?

For NaH, LiH, CaH2, NaBH4, small amounts LiAlH4: Start with the SLOW addition of isopropanol or ethanol, under adequate stirring until no more bubbling is observed. Repeat with methanol, and then repeat with water. Be Very Careful with the addition of WATER!

Can NaBH4 reduce alcohol?

NaBH4 is less reactive than LiAlH4 but is otherwise similar. It is only powerful enough to reduce aldehydes, ketones and acid chlorides to alcohols: esters, amides, acids and nitriles are largely untouched.

Is Lucas a reagent?

Lucas' reagent is a solution of anhydrous zinc chloride in concentrated hydrochloric acid. This solution is used to classify alcohols of low molecular weight. The reaction is a substitution in which the chloride replaces a hydroxyl group.

How do you reduce ketones?

Aldehydes and Ketones are reduced by most reducing agents. Sodium borohydride and lithium aluminumhydride are very common reducing agents. Ketones and Aldehydes can also be reduced to the respective alkanes.

How do you make sodium borohydride solution?

1. prepare 1.0 N NaOH solution.
2. cool the solution with an ice-water bath.
3. add the dry granulated NaBH4 to the NaOH solution under stirring conditions until a homogeneous mixture is formed.

Does NaBH4 reduce alkynes?

This reagent combination, known as Lindlar's catalyst, will also reduce the alkene only. This reagent is typically used to selectively reduce an alkyne to an alkene.

Is sodium borohydride a metal hydride?

Properties of hydride sources

Two practical sources of hydride-like reactivity are the complex metal hydrides lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH₄) and sodium borohydride (NaBH₄).

How do you neutralize NaBH4?

Sodium borohydride can be discarded in the appropriate waste container after neutralizing/dissolving slowly with isopropanol or water.

Is NaBH4 a carcinogen?

ACGIH: No component of this product present at levels greater than or equal to 0.1% is identified as a carcinogen or potential carcinogen by ACGIH.

What can sodium borohydride reduce?

SODIUM BOROHYDRIDE

Reduces aldehydes and ketones to corresponding alcohols. Sodium borohydride is not reactive to esters, epoxides, lactones, carboxylic acids, nitro compounds and nitriles, but reduces acyl chlorides.

Does NaBH4 react with water?

When sodium borohydride is in a strongly basic solution (at or above pH 10), it is stabilized against reaction with water, although addition of water may still be exothermic due to heat of solvation. At lower pH levels, sodium borohydride reacts exothermically with water to generate flammable hydrogen gas.

What is the fastest way to get rid of ketones?

If you detect ketones in your blood or urine, general treatment guidelines include drinking plenty of water or other calorie-free fluids to help flush ketones out of the body, taking insulin to bring your blood glucose level down, and rechecking both your blood glucose level and ketone level every three to four hours.

How do you turn ketones into alcohol?

Reduction of other aldehydes gives primary alcohols. Reduction of ketones gives secondary alcohols. The acidic work-up converts an intermediate metal alkoxide salt into the desired alcohol via a simple acid base reaction.

How do you turn an alcohol into a ketone?

Grignard reaction with aldehydes and ketones

To produce a primary alcohol, the Grignard reagent is reacted with formaldehyde. Reacting a Grignard reagent with any other aldehyde will lead to a secondary alcohol. Finally, reacting a Grignard reagent with a ketone will generate a tertiary alcohol.

Which alcohol does not react with Lucas reagent?

Primary alcohols do not react with Lucas reagent at room temperature and hence no turbidity is formed.

Why are there two layers in the Lucas test?

The lucas test involves testing an alcohol that is soluble in the Lucas reagent. When a secondary or tertiary alcohol reacts with the reagent it forms a secondary or tertiary alkyl chloride. The alkyl... ide is not soluble in the original layer so it forms a second layer.

Which alcohol will react fastest with Lucas reagent?

The alcohol that reacts fastest with Lucas reagent is tertiary alcohol. They can react easily at room temperature and they tend to show turbidity (oily layer) very quickly. The time difference is very low or we can say that the reaction occurs immediately.

What is the difference between LiAlH4 and NaBH4?

The key difference between LiAlH4 and NaBH4 is that LiAlH4 can reduce esters, amides and carboxylic acids whereas NaBH4 cannot reduce them. ... But LiAlH4 is a very strong reducing agent than NaBH4 because the Al-H bond in the LiAlH4 is weaker than the B-H bond in NaBH4. This makes the Al-H bond less stable.

Why is NaBH4 used in excess?

It is not necessary to exclude moisture nor atmospheric oxygen when using NaBH4. ... This is the main reason why a slight excess of sodium borohydride is used customarily in reduction reactions. NaBH4 is above all used for reducing aldehydes and ketones. Aldehydes can be reduced selectively in the presence of ke- tones.
