Slump - a landslide consisting of a mass of material moving downslope as a unit, usually along a curved plane of failure. The removed mass of soil and rock leave an abrupt drop-off at the top of the landslide known as a scarp.

What is slumping also known as?

A slump is a form of mass wasting that occurs when a coherent mass of loosely consolidated materials or a rock layer moves a short distance down a slope. ... Slumps have several characteristic features. The cut which forms as the landmass breaks away from the slope is called the scarp and is often cliff-like and concave.

Is slumping a type of landslide?

Types of Landslides and Associated Processes. Landslide is a general term used for a variety of landscape processes including slumps, rockfalls, avalanches, debris flows, mudflows, and lahars.

What is the definition of slumping in geography?

Slump, in geology, downward intermittent movement of rock debris, usually the consequence of removal of buttressing earth at the foot of a slope of unconsolidated material.

What is slump in mass movement?

Slump is common where clay-rich materials are exposed along a steep slope. Such oversteepend slopes naturally occur on the outside of meanders along the Red River. Slump is typically identified as the downward movement of a block of earth material along some curved surface of failure.

Landslide and its different types

Why does slump occur?

Slumps often happen when a slope is undercut, with no support for the overlying materials, or when too much weight is added to an unstable slope. Figure 1. Slump material moves as a whole unit, leaving behind a crescent shaped scar.

Is slump a deposition or erosion?

Lesson Summary. Gravity moves earth materials from higher elevations to lower elevations. Landslides, avalanches, and mudflows are examples of dangerous erosion by gravity. Slump and creep move material slowly downslope.

What is slumping posture?

Slumped posture is often caused by collapsing the upper body forward to use digital devices. Permission: Joseph E. Muscolino. Slumped spinal posture is a term that describes a slumped flexion posture of the spine. ... With slumped spinal posture, the pelvis is excessively posteriorly tilted compared to anatomic position.

What is landslide geography?

A landslide is the movement of rock, earth, or debris down a sloped section of land. Landslides are caused by rain, earthquakes, volcanoes, or other factors that make the slope unstable.

How does a slump differ from a flow?

A slump is a type of mass wasting that results in the sliding of coherent rock material along a curved surface. ... A debris flow is the movement of a water-laden mass of loose mud, sand, soil, rock and debris down a slope.

What role does the toe of a slump play?

The slump may break into separate blocks, each with their own scarp surface. Unconsolidated material breaks away from the top of the slope leaving a scarp surface. The toe of the slump overrides structures at base of slope.

What type of erosion is Slump?

A slump is a type of mass wasting that results in the sliding of coherent rock materials along a curved surface. ... A slump can occur as a single unit or as a number of slumps grouped together, and they form when the base of the mountain slope or hillside is eroded or cut away.

What does slump mean in slang?

What Is a Slump? Slump is a slang term for a sharp decline in business activity, trade, or market values. Slump is a very flexible term in that it is used to describe both a short, sharp decline as well as a more gradual, prolonged period of low activity or value.

What causes a rockslide?

A rockslide is a type of landslide caused by rock failure in which part of the bedding plane of failure passes through compacted rock and material collapses en masse and not in individual blocks. ... The rocks tumble downhill, loosening other rocks on their way and smashing everything in their path.

What is the difference between a slump and a landslide?

Landslides involve rock and debris moving downslope along a planar surface, whereas slumping usually occurs along a curved interface and as a single large unit.

How is slump different from creep?

They are both a form of mass wasting and have the same causes. The difference between a creep and a slump is that a creep moves slowly and gradually while a slump is faster and causes more drastic changes in terrain.

What are the 4 types of landslides?

Landslides are part of a more general erosion or surficial pro- cess known as mass wasting, which is simply the downslope movement of earth or surface materials due to gravity. They are classified into four main types: fall and toppling, slides (rotational and translational), flows and creep.

Why do we slump and slouch?

The human spine has natural curves to resist load on the spine in an upright, weight-bearing position. The cervical and lumbar spine have a lordosis, or forward convex curve. ... Without muscular support, the spine gradually loses its natural cervical and lumbar lordotic curves and becomes more kyphotic or slouched.

What is slumped in the body?

having your head low and shoulders forward: He sat slumped over his desk, the picture of misery. Not holding the body upright.

Is it OK to slump?

Slouching, slumping, and other types of poor posture can cause muscle tension, as well as back pain, joint pain, and reduced circulation. Poor posture can even lead to breathing issues and fatigue.

Is a slump deposition?

Slumps are common in unlithified sediments when water levels quickly drop. In a river bar formed at high flow rates and high water levels, slumps can form when the river drops and the still saturated sediment basically slips down the depositional slope.

What is meant by mass wasting?

Mass wasting is the movement of rock and soil down slope under the influence of gravity. ... Rock falls, slumps, and debris flows are all examples of mass wasting. Often lubricated by rainfall or agitated by seismic activity, these events may occur very rapidly and move as a flow.

What occurs during a slump quizlet?

What occurs during a slump? Slumps occurs when a large piece of a steep hill breaks away and falls. Compare and contrast landslides and mudflows. Both are sudden mass movements caused by gravity.

How do you get out of a slump?

1. Acknowledge and Accept. Slumps have a way of making you feel like something is wrong with you. ...
2. Give Yourself Grace. Listen, some people are going to tell you that you shouldn't throw a pity party. ...
3. Find the Lesson. ...
4. Set Small Goals.
