Sensory-specific satiety is a sensory hedonic phenomenon that refers to the declining satisfaction generated by the consumption of a certain type of food, and the consequent renewal in appetite resulting from the exposure to a new flavor or food.

What is an example of sensory specific satiety?

Studies have shown that eating monotonous meals (limited variety in food) results in long-term sensory-specific satiety. ... On the contrary, sensory-specific satiety can also cause obesity because of the stimulation of hunger for foods of different variety.

What does sensory specific satiety?

Sensory specific satiety (SSS) describes the decline in pleasantness associated with a food as it is eaten relative to a food that has not been eaten (the 'eaten' and 'uneaten' foods, respectively).

What is sensory specific satiety and how does it relate to junk food?

Sensory Specific Satiety is the tendency to feel full and stop eating when flavors are relatively limited and to stay hungry and keep eating when flavors are excessively diverse. ... if you turn on many areas at once, you must eat much more food before you feel full.

What is the satiety in psychology?

Satiety is the physical and psychological satisfaction that one acquires from consuming certain foods or beverages. Satiety may be immediate, such as thirst quenching, or it may be sustained and last a few hours between meals, such as a feeling of “fullness.” Much depends on the nutrients in foods and/or beverages.

What is SENSORY-SPECIFIC SATIETY? What does SENSORY-SPECIFIC SATIETY mean?

What are the satiety hormones?

The two hormones most closely associated with energy homeostasis leading to sensations of appetite and satiety are ghrelin and leptin. Any shift in the delicate balance between ghrelin and leptin drastically affects our body's ability to regulate energy demands and storage, leading to pathophysiology.

What are the satiety signals?

Satiety signals are those arising from the GI tract and related organs during a meal. These signals influence eating behavior by activating neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) in the hindbrain.

What is sensory specific satiety quizlet?

Sensory-specific satiety. a sensory hedonic phenomenon that refers to the declining satisfaction generated by the consumption of a certain type of food, and the consequent renewal in appetite resulting from the exposure to a new flavor or food.

What is the Glucostatic theory of hunger?

The glucostatic theory of food intake control postulated that reduced glucose utilization in critical brain regions leads to perception and expression of hunger, and increased glucose utilization in these same glucosensitive sites leads to decreased hunger and cessation of eating.

What are the three most critical brain areas associated with starting and stopping eating?

The nucleus accumbens, striatum, and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) are key areas involved in receiving and integrating these dopaminergic signals for actions (Figure 4). Indeed, these areas have been found to respond to both viewing of food cues and consumption of food during fMRI in humans [14, 84, 85, 96, 97, 100].

Why is sensory specific satiety adaptive?

Why is sensory-specific satiety beneficial/adaptive? It encourages the consumption of a varied diet. ... Many hunger and satiety peptides have receptors in the ___ , which plays a central role in eating behaviors.

Is there a drug to increase appetite?

Although megestrol acetate, oxandrolone, and dronabinol are the only drugs that the FDA have approved as appetite stimulants, some other medications have the side effect of increasing appetite. Some doctors may prescribe them off-label, or for their primary purpose, for this reason.

Is satiation a word?

The condition of being full to or beyond satisfaction: engorgement, repletion, satiety, surfeit.

Which food is a whole grain that provides soluble fiber to fight heart disease?

Soluble fiber found in beans, oats, flaxseed and oat bran may help lower total blood cholesterol levels by lowering low-density lipoprotein, or "bad," cholesterol levels. Studies also have shown that high-fiber foods may have other heart-health benefits, such as reducing blood pressure and inflammation.

What is Glucostatic mechanism?

glucostatic mechanism A theory that appetite depends on the difference between arterial and venous concentrations of glucose; when the difference falls low enough, the hunger centres in the hypothalamus are stimulated. A Dictionary of Food and Nutrition.

What are the Lipostatic and Glucostatic theories?

While the glucostatic theory holds that hunger and satiety are due primarily to short-term shifts in blood glucose levels (or utilization rates), the lipostatic hypothesis states that the humoral signal which influences central structures must be related to long-term changes in the adipose tissue stores.

What is the Lipostat theory?

The lipostat theory postulates that fat-borne factors act on the brain to regulate energy homeostasis, controlling levels of adiposity. ... Since the discovery of leptin, various factors have been found to be synthesised within adipose tissue and secreted to act as hormones.

Which of the following persons is most likely to have anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia is more common among girls and women than boys and men. Anorexia is also more common among girls and younger women than older women. On average, girls develop anorexia at 16 or 17. Teen girls between 13 and 19 and young women in their early 20s are most at risk.

Which of the following best describes the refractory period of a neuron?

Which answer best describes the relative refractory period in the neuron? The resting membrane potential is restored, but concentrations of sodium and potassium are not restored to their original state.

What causes satiety?

Early satiety occurs when you are unable to eat a full meal, or you feel very full after eating only a small amount of food. Early satiety is usually caused by gastroparesis, a condition in which your stomach is slow to empty. Other causes of early satiety include: An obstruction.

What is short term satiety signals?

There are two primary sources of signals that stop eating: short-term signals come from immediate effects of eating a meal, beginning before food digestion, and long-term signals, that arise in adipose tissue, control the intake of calories by monitoring the sensitivity of brain mechanisms to hunger and satiety signals ...

How does satiety occur?

The idea that food volume influences satiety is supported by the finding that gastric distention activates satiety circuitry in the brain via the vagal nerves. It does this even when the stomach is distended by a balloon and not food. The rate of gastric emptying is also influential.

Is insulin a satiety hormone?

Thus, when insulin is increased during spontaneously taken meals, those meals are reduced in size and drugs which block insulin release, increase the size of meals; we assert insulin is a prandial satiety hormone which likely reduced feeding by increasing glucose uptake into peripheral tissue.

How can I reduce satiety?

Eat a Whole Foods Diet and 3 Meals Per Day

During crash dieting or calorie restriction, ghrelin levels increase and poor food choices and cravings will increase. Protein can slow gastric emptying and provides satiety. Consuming healthy fats can decrease ghrelin levels.
