Phyllotaxis, the regular arrangement of leaves or flowers around a plant stem, is an example of developmental pattern formation and organogenesis. Phyllotaxis is characterized by the divergence angles between the organs, the most common angle being 137.5°, the golden angle.

What causes Phyllotaxis?

The phyllotactic pattern therefore results from a dynamic interaction between existing and newly initiating organ primordia on the flanks of the SAM, mediated by actively transported auxin, such that new primordia emerge at sites of high auxin concentration and maintain a minimum distance from each other by depleting ...

What is meant by Phyllotaxis?

1 : the arrangement of leaves on a stem and in relation to one another.

What is Phyllotaxis and leaf Venation?

When two or more leaves are borne on the same node, the arrangement is known as cyclic phyllotaxy. It may be of two types: Opposite and whorled. ... b) Whorled or verticillate: When more than two leaves are developed at each node forming a circle or whorl, the arrangement is known as whorled or verticillate phyllotaxy.

What is phyllotaxy in plants?

The spatial arrangement of leaves along the plant axis is called phyllotaxy, and the time period between initiations of two successive leaves is called the plastochron. These spatial (phyllotaxy) and temporal (plastochron) patterns of leaf initiation contribute to the unique architectures of specific plant species.

Leaf - Phyllotaxy

What is the main purpose of phyllotaxy of leaves?

Protection of leaves against sunlight.

What is phyllotaxy explain with example?

Phyllotaxy refers to the pattern or arrangement of leaves on the stem or branch of a plant. It is of three types, alternate, opposite, and whorled phyllotaxy. In alternate phyllotaxy, a single leaf arises from the node of a branch. This type of phyllotaxy is observed in the sunflower, mustard, and peepal.

Why are Stipules important leaf structures?

It is known that foliaceous stipules are used like leaves to make energy for the plants. Sometimes stipules protect the next leaf or bud as it grows in then falls off after the leaf unfolds, as with Tulip Poplars. Stipules can be used as climbing tendrils by climbing plants.

What is spiral arrangement?

Spiral arrangements involve alternately arranged leaves in which each succeeding stem node and attached leaf is rotated slightly from the nodes below and above it. If the spiral is to the right, it is referred to as dextrorse; if to the left, it is referred to as sinistrorse. Opposite.

How are leaves arranged?

The arrangement of leaves on a stem is known as phyllotaxy; leaves can be classified as either alternate, spiral, opposite, or whorled. Plants with alternate and spiral leaf arrangements have only one leaf per node. ... In a whorled arrangement, three or more leaves connect at a node.

Why are leaves arranged differently on different plants?

All the plants are not located in the same habitat. According to the habitat the plants, they adapt and possess different morphology and different characteristic patterns. One such pattern is arrangement of leaves in different plants, study of which is called phyllotaxis .

What is leaf modification?

Leaves can be modified in the form of spines that reduce water loss and also act as a defence. Some are modified into tendrils to provide support to the plant. Some leaves are thick that help in water storage. Some are modified to catch and digest insects.

What do you mean by Stipule?

: either of a pair of small, usually leaflike appendages borne at the base of the petiole in many plants.

What is the meaning of Heterophylly?

- Heterophylly can be defined as the presence of differently shaped leaves on the same or different stem of the same plant. It is mainly of three types- 1) Developmental heterophylly- In this type, different types of leaves arise at different times of growth.

What trees have whorled leaves?

• Blackboard tree (Alstonia scholaris)
• Japanese clethra (Clethra barbinervis)
• Lemonwood (Pittosporum eugenioides)
• Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia)
• Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)
• Redvein enkianthus (Enkianthus campanulatus)

What is opposite phyllotaxy?

(A) Opposite Phyllotaxy:

In opposite phyllotaxy the two leaves at each node are always opposite one another. If the successive pairs of leaves be placed at right angles to one another, the arrangement is termed opposite decussate .

What is called Venation?

: an arrangement or system of veins (as in the tissue of a leaf or the wing of an insect)

What is the example of alternate phyllotaxy?

(1) An alternate phyllotaxy: In this type of phyllotaxy, the single leaf is present at each node. These leaves are alternate in the position. The examples of this type of phyllotaxy are rose, sun flower, mustard etc.

What are the function of stipules?

Stipules are the lateral appendages which are found attached at the base of the leaf. Stipules mainly protect the bud and emerging young leaves. In some plants, stipules carry out photosynthesis. Some stipules become thorns, spines and protect the plant from damage by predators.

What are stipules state its functions?

Stipules are the two lateral appendages develop at the leaf base of dicot plants. Stipules protects the leaf in bud condition.

What are stipules and where are they located?

In angiosperms leaves commonly have a pair of structures known as stipules, which are located on each side of the leaf base and may resemble scales, spines, glands, or leaflike structures. ... When only a single blade is inserted directly on the petiole, the leaf is called simple.

What is phyllotaxy short answer?

Phyllotaxy refers to the arrangement of leaves on a stem. The arrangement ensures that the leaves get maximum amount of sunlight for its growth. The arrangement of the leaves around the stem or branch of a plant is called Phyllotaxy.

What are the three types of phyllotaxy in plants?

There are three types of phyllotaxy: alternate, whorled, and opposite. In alternate phyllotaxy, individual leaves arise from each node on the stem of the plant, and the arrangement from node to node along the stem is in a spiral pattern.

How do leaf modifications help plants?

The main function of the leaves is to carry out the process of photosynthesis. However, in a few plants, leaves are modified to perform different functions. (a) Tendrils: The leaves of a pea plant are modified into tendrils that help the plant in climbing. ... The petioles in these plants synthesize food.
