(Also called orographic cyclogenesis.) The synoptic-scale development of an atmospheric cyclonic circulation on the downwind side of a mountain range. The lack of cool air at low levels and the descending upper-level air make the mountain lee environment statically less stable than the surroundings. ...

What does Cyclogenesis mean and where does it commonly occur?

Define cyclogenesis. ... Cyclogenesis is the beginning of the formation of midlatitude cyclones, which occurs when a minor kink develops along a stationary front. It most commonly occurs along a polar front.

What causes Cyclogenesis?

Cyclogenesis is initiated by a disturbance occurring along a stationary or very slow-moving front between cold and warm air. ... This disturbance distorts the front into the wavelike configuration.

What is a Lee cyclone?

lee cyclone, small-scale cyclone that forms on the leeward, or downwind, side of mountain barriers as the general westerly flow is disturbed by the mountain. Lee cyclones may produce major windstorms and dust storms downstream of a mountain barrier.

What type of vorticity is associated with Cyclogenesis?

Cyclogenesis is most likely to occur in regions of cyclonic vorticity advection, downstream of a strong westerly jet. The combination of vorticity advection and thermal advection created by the temperature gradient and a low pressure center cause upward motion around the low.

cyclogenesis

What is meant by cyclogenesis In what areas does it occur and why what is the role of upper tropospheric circulation in the formation of a surface low?

Explain why it is necessary for an air mass to be lifted if there is to saturation, condensation, and precipitation. It cools it adiabatically (by expanding). Saturation leads to condensation leads to precipitation. Differentiate between frontal lifting at an advancing cold front and an advancing warm front.

What are the stages of cyclogenesis?

• Stationary Stage. The first stage of cyclogenesis, the stationary stage, is named so due to the presence of a stationary front. ...
• Wave Stage. ...
• Open Stage. ...
• Occluded Stage. ...
• Dissipation Stage.

What is Lee cyclogenesis?

Lee cyclogenesis is a multistage process involving a phase of rapid deepening followed by a transition to slower baroclinic deepening. The mountain barrier disrupts the orderly advection of low-level cold air that would occur behind the cyclone over flatter terrain and induces a quasigeostrphic imbalance.

What is understood by the term the lee side?

Definitions of lee side. the side of something that is sheltered from the wind. synonyms: lee, leeward. Antonyms: windward. the side of something that is toward the wind.

What are lee side lows?

Leeside Low

Extratropical cyclones that form on the downwind (lee) side of a mountain chain. In the United States, they frequently form on the eastern side of the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas.

What are the six stages of cyclogenesis?

• Stationary Stage. The first stage of cyclogenesis, the stationary stage, is named so due to the presence of a stationary front.
• Wave Stage.
• Open Stage.
• Occluded Stage.
• Dissipation Stage.

When speed convergence occurs in the upper atmosphere What effect does it have on Cyclogenesis?

8. When speed convergence occurs in the upper atmosphere, what effect does it have on cyclogenesis? It has no impact whatsoever on the formation of mid-latitude cyclones. It can either inhibit or enhance cyclogenesis, depending on the surface air temperature.

Which ingredient is necessary during the initial stage of cyclogenesis?

Tropical cyclones are like engines that require warm, moist air as fuel. So the first ingredient needed for a tropical cyclone is warm ocean water. That is why tropical cyclones form only in tropical regions where the ocean is at least 80 degrees F for at least the top 50 meters (about 165 feet) below the surface.

What causes extratropical cyclones?

Extratropical cyclones present a contrast to the more violent cyclones or hurricanes of the tropics, which form in regions of relatively uniform temperatures. According to the polar-front theory, extratropical cyclones develop when a wave forms on a frontal surface separating a warm air mass from a cold air mass.

What are the stages of mid-latitude cyclone?

2. Mid-latitude cyclone goes through a series of stages from birth, to maturity, to death as an occluded storm. 3. An important influence on the development of a mid-latitude cyclonic storm is the upper-air flow, including the jet stream.

What type of upper level condition typically lies above and behind a cold font?

What type of upper-level condition typically lies above and behind a cold front? Typically, an upper-level trough exists above and behind a cold front as heights lower in association with colder, denser, air.

What does leeward mean in Hawaii?

Kona means 'Leeward' side. You may have heard of the terms leeward and windward to describe different sides of islands. Leeward is the side of the island that faces away from the incoming winds.

What does leeward mean?

: being in or facing the direction toward which the wind is blowing also : being the side opposite the windward. Synonyms & Antonyms Example Sentences Learn More About leeward.

Is the leeward side cooler?

Rain. As condensation occurs, it releases heat into the surrounding air. ... As the air continues to descend towards sea level, atmospheric pressure increases which causes a temperature increase. Because of all of this (scientifically called adiabatic warming), the leeward side is generally warmer and drier.

In which of the following areas is Cyclogenesis most likely to occur?

Cyclogenesis most often occurs along this polar front, especially underneath areas located just downstream of 500 mb troughs because in these areas upper tropospheric divergence is occurring.

How long do mid-latitude cyclones last?

A midlatitude cyclone's life cycle typically last three days. However, when conditions are favorable, the cyclone can progress from its birth to maximum intensity in 24 hr or less.

How are cyclones and anticyclones related?

Cyclones and anticyclones are both wind systems indicating distinctive weather patterns, but they have opposite characteristics. A major difference is that a cyclone is a low pressure system and an anticyclone is a high pressure system.

Which of the following is the first condition that begins Cyclogenesis?

Which of the following is the first condition that begins cyclogenesis? Upper airflow and surface airflow are linked through rising warm air and sinking cold air.

What happens when an upper-level low lies directly above a surface low?

When an upper-level low lies directly above a surface low, the pressure of the surface low will decrease. a wave cyclone will begin to form.

What is a Tutt in weather?

A tropical upper tropospheric trough (TUTT), also known as the mid-oceanic trough, is a trough situated in the upper-level (at about 200 hPa) tropics. ... When upper cold lows break off from their base, they tend to retrograde and force the development of, or enhance, surface troughs and tropical waves to their east.
