Glomerular blood hydrostatic pressure (GBHP) promotes filtration - it pushes water and solutes in blood plasma through the glomerular filter. GBHP is the blood pressure in glomerular capillaries, which is about 55mm Hg. 2. ... The amount of back-pressure is the CHP, about 15mm Hg.

What is glomerular hydrostatic pressure quizlet?

glomerular blood hydrostatic pressure (GBHP) the blood pressure of the glomerular capillaries--->promotes filtration by forcing H2O + solutes in plasma through the filtration membrane. capsular hydrostatic pressure (CHP)

What is the function of glomerular hydrostatic blood pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure produced by a fluid against a surface. The blood inside the glomerulus creates glomerular hydrostatic pressure which forces fluid out of the glomerulus into the glomerular capsule.

What is hydrostatic pressure kidneys?

In the case of the kidney, hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by fluid on the capillary walls of the glomerulus or the walls of the Bowman's capsule.

Why glomerular hydrostatic pressure is high?

Hydrostatic pressure is high because of the structure of Afferent arteriole (wide and short), increasd resistance offered by Efferent arteriole which allows blood to stay in the glomerulus .

Forces of Filtration

What causes blood hydrostatic pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is a force generated by the pressure of fluid on the capillary walls either by the blood plasma or interstitial fluid. The net filtration pressure is the balance of the four Starling forces and determines the net flow of fluid across the capillary membrane.

What is the value of glomerular hydrostatic pressure?

In blood vessels supplying the renal corpuscles, the average hydrostatic pressure is about 1 kPa. The average hydrostatic pressure falls to a value of 0.04 kPa within the postcardinal vein efferent to the renal corpuscle. Within the glomerular capillaries the hydrostatic pressure averages 0.21 kPa.

What is meant by GFR?

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a calculation that determines how well the blood is filtered by the kidneys, which is one way to measure remaining kidney function.

What is GFR in zoology?

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the volume of fluid filtered from the kidney's glomerular capillaries into Bowman's capsule per unit time.

What is GFR anatomy?

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the measure that describes the total amount of filtrate formed by all the renal corpuscles in both kidneys per minute. The glomerular filtration rate is directly proportional to the pressure gradient in the glomerulus, so changes in pressure will change GFR.

What happens when glomerular hydrostatic pressure increases?

Increases in the glomerular capillary hydrostatic pressure cause increases in net filtration pressure and GFR. However, increases in Bowman space hydrostatic pressure causes decreases in filtration pressure and GFR. This may result from ureteral constriction.

How does hydrostatic pressure work?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure that is exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. ... The more dense the fluid above it, the more pressure is exerted on the object that is submerged, due to the weight of the fluid.

How does GFR affect urine output?

Even when the GFR is very low, the urine output is variable, ranging from oliguria to normal or even above normal levels. These findings are related to the fact that the urine output is determined not by the GFR alone, but also by the difference between the GFR and the rate of tubular reabsorption.

What is the glomerular capsule quizlet?

Bowman's capsule (or the Bowman capsule, capsula glomeruli, or glomerular capsule) is a cup-like sack at the beginning of the tubular component of a nephron in the mammalian kidney that performs the first step in the filtration of blood to form urine. A glomerulus is enclosed in the sac.

What is glomerular filtrate quizlet?

glomerular filtration: a portion of the blood plasma is filtered into the kidneys.

Why hydrostatic pressure is so high in the glomerular capillaries quizlet?

The hydrostatic pressure (due to the plasma) from the capillaries must be higher to overcome the other 2 pressures and when it is it forces an ultrafiltrate into the capsule. The large diameter afferent arterioles allow the blood arriving at the glomerular capillaries to have a high pressure.

What is the glomerular?

Glomeruli are the tiny network of blood vessels that are the “cleaning units” of your kidney. They filter waste and remove extra fluids from your blood. When glomeruli are damaged and can't function as they should, it's called glomerular disease. Many diseases and conditions can damage the glomeruli.

What is normal GFR?

A GFR of 60 or higher is in the normal range. A GFR below 60 may mean kidney disease. A GFR of 15 or lower may mean kidney failure.

How does GFR affect blood pressure?

GFR is one of the many ways in which homeostasis of blood volume and blood pressure may occur. In particular, low GFR is one of the variables that will activate the renin–angiotensin feedback system, a complex process that will increase blood volume, blood pressure, and GFR.

What is the difference between eGFR and GFR?

GFR is Glomerular Filtration Rate and it is a key indicator of renal function. eGFR is estimated GFR and is a mathematically derived entity based on a patient's serum creatinine level, age, sex and race.

What does high GFR mean?

An eGFR higher than 60 means you have at least 60% kidney function. Generally, the higher the number, the better your kidney function.

What is creatinine clearance?

A creatinine clearance test measures the amount of creatinine in a sample of blood taken from your arm and in a sample of all the urine you produce during a 24-hour period. Creatinine develops as a result of the breakdown of creatine, a chemical that helps provide the muscles with energy.

What is the normal value for glomerular hydrostatic pressure in mmHg?

25-30 mm Hg.

Where is the hydrostatic pressure the highest in the kidney?

The hydrostatic pressure in the glomerular capillary is 4-6 times higher than the hydrostatic pressure in the peritubule capillary so that approximately 25% of the plasma is filtered. The bulk of the filtrate is subsequently reabsorbed by the peritubule capillary network.

What decreases hydrostatic pressure in the glomerulus?

Glomerular filtration can be decreased by reducing capillary hydrostatic pressure with one of the following: (1) a decrease in glomerular blood flow as a result of low blood pressure or low cardiac output; (2) the constriction of the afferent arteriole as a result of increased sympathetic activity or drugs (e.g., ...
