Gillmore (1825–1888), American engineer] A device which uses a penetration test to measure the difference between the initial and final setting time of dental cement. A ¼ pound needle is used for determining the initial set and a one pound needle is used for defining the final set.

What is the use of Gillmore needle apparatus?

Gillmore Needle Apparatus is used to determine initial and final set times of Portland cement, masonry cement, hydraulic hydrated lime, and certain mortars in accordance with ASTM C266 and other standards.

What is importance of setting time of cement?

The significance of Setting Time for Cement. When cement is mixed with water, it hydrates and makes cement paste. This paste can be molded into any desired shape due to its plasticity. Within this time cement continues with reacting water and slowly cement starts losing its elasticity and starts to harden.

What is the difference between setting and hardening?

Setting describes the stiffening of the fresh cement paste. Onset of rigidity occurs. Then hardening begins, which indicates that a useful and measurable strength is developing. Setting and hardening result from the continuing reaction between the cementitious material and water.

How can we reduce the setting of cement?

Retarding admixtures are used to slow the rate of setting of concrete. By slowing the initial setting time, the concrete mixture can stay in its fresh mix state longer before it gets to its hardened form. Use of retarders is beneficial for: Complex concrete placement or grouting.

How do you use Vicat apparatus?

Tap the mould to remove any bubbles of air. Place the mould along with the plate under the rod and plunger attached with the apparatus. Lower the plunger gradually till it touches the surface of the mould and then releases it quickly.

What is Vicat plunger?

The apparatus consists of a frame bearing a movable plunger of 300 grams weight. The Plunger is 10 mm diameter at one end and is fitted with a removable 1 mm diameter needle at the other end. The plunger is reversible and carries an indicator which moves over the scale graduated in millimeters.

What is the height of Vicat Mould?

Vicat mould in the form of frustum of a cone with internal diameter of 60 mm at the top, 70mm at the bottom and a height of 40 mm. Glass base plate for the mould.

How many types of needles are used in setting time test of cement?

It consists of an arrangement to hold the plunger of 10 mm diameter and two other needles which are made to freely fall into a mould filled with the cement paste and the amount of penetration of the needles of plunder can be noted using the vertical graduations from 0 mm to 50 mm.

What are retarders in concrete?

Retarding admixtures, which slow the setting rate of concrete, are used to counteract the accelerating effect of hot weather on concrete setting. ... Retarders keep concrete workable during placement and delay the initial set of concrete. Most retarders also function as water reducers and may entrain some air in concrete.

How do you increase concrete time?

The major factors affecting the time of setting are cement composition, water-cementitious material ratio (w/cm), temperature, and admixtures. When cement hydrates faster, the time of setting is reduced. Increases in the w/cm result in increased time of setting.

Which chemical is used to increase the setting time of cement?

Gypsum is called the retarding agent of cement which is mainly used for regulating the setting time of cement and is an indispensable component.

What is green cement?

Green cement is a form of cement produced with the help of a “carbon-negative manufacturing process.” In other words, cement produced as the final product of a technologically advanced process, such that emissions during unit operations (like clinker production) are minimized, is referred to as green cement.

What is bulking of sand?

Bulking in sand Occurs When dry sand interacts with the atmospheric moisture. Presence of moisture content forms a thin layer around sand particles. ... This results in the increase of the volume of sand. Excessive presence of moisture content in the sand makes concrete to less durable and lose its strength.

Which ingredient gives Colour to the cement?

Iron oxide is present about 0.5 - 6.0 % in cement, which provides colour, hardness and strength to the cement.

How many days is the curing of concrete?

Concrete typically takes 24 to 48 hours to dry enough for you to walk or drive on it. However, concrete drying is a continuous and fluid event, and usually reaches its full effective strength after about 28 days.

What is the cure time for concrete?

When waiting for concrete to dry, keep these timeframes in mind: 24 to 48 hours - after inital set, forms can be removed and people can walk on the surface. 7 days - after partial curing, traffic from vehicles and equipment is okay. 28 days - at this point, the concrete should be fully cured.

What additives make concrete stronger?

You can add more Portland cement to bagged concrete to make it stronger. You can also add hydrated lime. To make the strongest concrete, the sand should be sourced from volcanic lava that has a high silica content.

How do you increase slump in concrete?

Adding just 1 gallon of water per cubic yard can: Increase slump 1 inch, decrease compressive strength 150 to 200 psi, waste about 1/4 bag of cement, and increase shrinkage by 10%. But water isn't the only way to adjust slump. Consider adding a superplasticizer at the site to increase slump.

What does sugar do to wet concrete?

The sugar slows down the setting of the concrete, and is used in hot conditions or when large amounts of concrete must be poured out before setting occurs. Very small amounts of sugar delays the hardening of concrete without influencing its strength or other properties once finally set.

Which needle is used for final setting time?

Final setting time is that time period between the time water is added to cement and the time at which 1 mm needle makes an impression on the paste in the mould but 5 mm attachment does not make any impression. This is test is required to understand the rate of gain of strength of cement with respect to time.

What is the size of Vicat needle?

The device which is used to find the initial setting time of cement is called as Vicat apparatus. It has a square needle of 1 mm size and 50 mm length and a mould, which is 40 mm in height and 80 mm in diameter.

What is annular collar?

Instead of square needle, annular collar is used. The annular collar is attached to the movable rod of vicat apparatus. 3. The annular rod is gently released. The time at which the annular rod makes an impression on test block and the collar fails to do so is noted.
