Dextrocardia with Situs Inversus is a rare heart condition characterized by abnormal positioning of the heart. In this condition, the tip of the heart (apex) is positioned on the right side of the chest.

How rare is situs inversus with dextrocardia?

Dextrocardia affects an estimated 1 out of every 12,000 people . Dextrocardia situs inversus totalis affects approximately 1 out of every 10,000 children.

Is situs inversus the same as dextrocardia?

Situs inversus with dextrocardia is also termed situs inversus totalis because the cardiac position, as well as the atrial chambers and abdominal viscera, is a mirror image of the normal anatomy. Situs inversus totalis has an incidence of 1 in 8,000 births.

Does situs inversus affect the heart?

Situs inversus causes the positions of the heart and lungs to be mirrored. Situs inversus (also called situs transversus or oppositus) is a congenital condition in which the major visceral organs are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions. The normal arrangement of internal organs is known as situs solitus.

Can situs inversus harm you?

Because the organs can be functional in situs inversus, it's possible for a person to have no complications. Other patients can experience cardiac dysfunction or a lung condition called primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), which causes mucus buildup in the lungs. This can lead to chronic bronchitis and sinusitis.

Situs Inversus with Dextrocardia: Explanation of Chest X-ray Findings

Can you have dextrocardia without inversus?

In dextrocardia, the heart is on the right side of the thorax with or without situs inversus. When the heart is right sided with inverted atria, the stomach is right sided, and the liver is left sided, the combination is dextrocardia with situs inversus.

How long can you live with situs inversus?

Treatment of Dextrocardia with Situs Inversus is symptomatic and supportive when needed. In most cases, affected individuals can live a normal life without any symptoms or discomfort. If the condition is associated with other more serious heart malformations, the prognosis and treatment will vary.

Is dextrocardia a heart defect?

Dextrocardia is a rare heart condition in which your heart points toward the right side of your chest instead of the left side. Dextrocardia is congenital, which means people are born with this abnormality. Less than 1 percent of the general population is born with dextrocardia.

Can you get pregnant with situs inversus?

There were 6 pregnancies in 3 patients with situs inversus and 9 pregnancies in 6 patients with isolated dextrocardia. There were no apparent antenatal complications. None of the patients developed any cardiac symptoms antenatally.

Does situs inversus affect the brain?

Yet individuals with anatomical reversals in brain structure, due to a condition called situs inversus totalis, still retain left-sided language processing [4]. These results suggest that, for some cognitive tasks, function may not follow structure.

Is situs inversus a mutation?

A Homozygous Nme7 Mutation Is Associated with Situs Inversus Totalis.

Is situs inversus a disease?

Situs inversus is a condition in which the arrangement of the internal organs is a mirror image of normal anatomy. It can occur alone (isolated, with no other abnormalities or conditions) or it can occur as part of a syndrome with various other defects.

How common is dextrocardia?

Dextrocardia is a very rare condition, and studies have revealed incidence rates of dextrocardia to be around 1 in 12000 pregnancies. [7] Kartagener syndrome has an incidence rate of about 1 in 30,000 live births, and situs inversus totalis was seen in around 50% of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia.

Can your heart move position?

Dextrocardia is a heart condition that makes the heart move out of its usual position. It points towards the right side of your chest instead of the left side. The condition is congenital, meaning that people are born with it, but it's rare.

What is situs ambiguous?

Introduction. Heterotaxy (or situs ambiguus) is defined as the abnormal arrangement of thoracic or abdominal organs, or both, across the left-right axis (Video 90.1 ); it is different from complete situs inversus, which involves all organs.

What does Levocardia mean?

Strictly speaking, levocardia means that the cardiac apex is left sided. Isolated levocardias are those hearts that are left sided when situs inversus is present.

How is Dextrocardia diagnosed on ECG?

4 In patients with dextrocardia, the standard 12-lead ECG will show marked right-axis deviation of the P wave and QRS complex, with lead I frequently demonstrating a largely negative QRS complex and inverted P and T waves. 5 The QRS complexes in leads aVR and aVL are reversed so that the R wave in lead aVR is positive.

What is situs inversus totalis?

Disease definition. A rare, genetic, developmental defect during embryogenesis characterized by total mirror-image transposition of both thoracic and abdominal viscera across the left-right axis of the body.

What are the symptoms of Kartagener syndrome?

• Neonatal respiratory distress.
• Frequent respiratory infections that can lead to severe lung damage.
• Chronic nasal congestion.
• Frequent sinus infections.
• Recurrent middle ear infections, particularly in early childhood.
• Hearing loss.
• Hydrocephalus.
• Infertility.

What is situs inversus Abdominalis?

Situs inversus abdominalis (SIA) is an uncommon condition that causes intestinal malrotation in the paediatric population as its primary complication (Brown, 2017). Presentations of acute surgical emergencies in adults secondary to SIA are extremely rare (Brown, 2017).

Why does right sided heart failure occur?

High blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries increases the workload of the right ventricle. Over time, this causes the right ventricle to fail. This is blockage of the arteries that supply blood to your heart. CAD can cause left-sided heart failure leading to right-sided heart failure.

What happens if left ventricular hypertrophy is left untreated?

Left ventricular hypertrophy is more common in people who have uncontrolled high blood pressure. But no matter what your blood pressure is, developing left ventricular hypertrophy puts you at higher risk of congestive heart failure and irregular heart rhythms.

Does Donny Osmond have situs inversus?

Situs inversus is a rare condition, but not unheard of: Donny Osmond is one of the more well-known cases. In fact, situs inversus totalis, where all the abdominal organs and the heart are flipped, is the most common type and affects around 1 in 10,000 people.

What is the opposite of situs inversus?

A century later the Scottish physician Matthew Baillie recorded the reversal as situs inversus, from the Latin situs, as in “location”, and inversus for “opposite”. Situs solitus is the normal structure, while isolated levocardia refers to when the heart alone remains on the left - an even rarer condition.

Can heart be at right side?

Dextrocardia is a condition in which the heart is pointed toward the right side of the chest. Normally, the heart points toward the left. The condition is present at birth (congenital).
