Infraocclusion is a term used to describe a tooth which has stopped its relative occlusal growth into the arch after the period of active eruption; as a result, the tooth becomes depressed below the occlusal plane.

How is Infraocclusion treated?

TREATMENT OF INFRAOCCLUDED PRIMARY MOLARS WITHOUT SUCCESSOR

Early prophylactic removal is frequently indicated, after an assessment of root resorption and adjacent periodontal support loss as well as the age of onset.

What is ankylosis in dentistry?

Definition. A rare disorder characterized by the fusion of the tooth to the bone, preventing both eruption and orthodontic movement. Epidemiology.

How is ankylosis of the tooth diagnosed?

A definitive diagnosis of ankylosis is believed to be given by checking the mobility of the targeted tooth after applying orthodontic force, an ankylosed tooth will show no mobility. In early detection of ankylosis, radiographic examination is not effective because it only produces 2-dimensional graphic.

What are submerged teeth?

Submerged tooth is the one that is depressed below the occlusal plane. Dental ankylosis is thought to be a major cause of submergence.

Can teeth sink into gums?

Ankylosis occurs when a tooth fuses to the surrounding bone and slowly begins to sink or submerge into the nearby gum tissue. Normally, small fibers called the periodontal ligament hold a tooth in its socket, but with ankylosis, this connection is absent, and the tooth becomes directly attached to nearby bone.

What's the difference between impacted and embedded teeth?

The teeth which are not erupted because of lack of space or any obstruction in their path of eruption are called impacted, those which are not erupted because of lack of eruptive force are called embedded and those which are not erupted fully because of ankylosis are called submerge teeth.

What causes dental ankylosis?

One of the major causes of tooth ankylosis is dental trauma that leads to luxation. As a group, luxation injuries are the most common of all dental injuries, with reported incidence ranging from 30% to 44% of all dental trauma cases, which affect 6% of the population [14].

What causes ankylosis?

In fibrous ankylosis, a soft tissue (fibrous) union of joint components occurs. Most unilateral cases are caused by mandibular trauma or infection. Severe arthritis, particularly related to rheumatic conditions, and therapeutic radiation exposure to the joint (cancer treatment) may also give rise to ankylosis.

When should ankylosed teeth be removed?

Conservative monitoring of ankylosed primary molars is recommended. The clinician should consider extraction if the permanent successor has an altered path of eruption, if the ankylosed primary molar is severely infraoccluded with the adjacent teeth tipping to prevent the successor from erupting, or both.

What is alveolar bone?

The alveolar process, which is also called the alveolar bone, is the thick ridge of bone which contains the tooth sockets. The alveolar bone is located on the jaw bones which hold the teeth. In humans, these bones that contain the teeth are the maxilla and the mandible.

How rare is an Ankylosed tooth?

Luckily, this condition is rare. Fewer than 200,000 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with an ankylosed tooth.

What is tooth Pericoronitis?

Pericoronitis is swelling and infection of the gum tissue around the wisdom teeth, the third and final set of molars that usually appear in your late teens or early 20s. It is most common around the lower wisdom teeth.

What is ectopic eruption of teeth?

Ectopic eruption is a disturbance in which the tooth does not follow its usual course. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide a brief review regarding the incidence, etiology, classification and different management techniques used for correcting ectopically erupting permanent first molar.

What is the second tooth in hypodontia?

It rarely occurs in primary teeth (also known as deciduous, milk, first and baby teeth) and the most commonly affected are the adult second premolars and the upper lateral incisors.

What does Anodontia mean?

Anodontia is a genetic disorder defined as the absence of all teeth. It usually occurs as part of a syndrome that includes other abnormalities. Also rare but more common than anodontia are hypodontia and oligodontia.

What is complete ankylosis?

ankylosis, in medicine, stiffness of a joint as the result of injury or disease. The rigidity may be complete or partial and may be due to inflammation of the tendinous or muscular structures outside the joint or of the tissues of the joint itself.

Is ankylosis a fusion?

Ankylosis, the fusion of tooth to bone, is common in the primary dentition.

Can HLA B27 be cured?

There's no cure for ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but treatment is available to help relieve the symptoms. Treatment can also help delay or prevent the process of the spine joining up (fusing) and stiffening.

What causes a tooth to fuse to jaw bone?

An ankylosed tooth means the root of a tooth is permanently connected to the jaw. It cannot move because the tooth no longer has the protective periodontal ligament around it. The root of the tooth will then become permanently attached to the jaw bone.

Do ankylosed teeth need to be removed?

When treatment planning an ankylosed tooth in an adult, it must be stated that the ankylosed tooth does not need to be extracted just because it is ankylosed. If you think about it, an ankylosed tooth is not that dissimilar from an osseointegrated implant.

What is replacement resorption of teeth?

Replacement resorption refers to resorption of the root surface and its substitution by bone, resulting in anky- losis. Replacement resorption accompanies dentoalveolar ankylosis due to extensive trauma to the tooths at- tachment apparatus (PDL damage).

What happens if impacted tooth is not removed?

Gum disease

Along with tooth decay, the difficulty of cleaning impacted, partially erupted wisdom teeth increases the risk of developing a painful, inflammatory gum condition called pericoronitis. This can lead to pain and swelling in or around the tooth, jaw or cheeks, and will likely continue to recur if not treated.

How long does it take for a impacted tooth to come down?

Removal of an impacted tooth can be done with a simple surgery – but further orthodontic care may be necessary to achieve straight teeth and a healthy smile. Bringing an impacted tooth into its correct position (and properly aligning the rest of the teeth) will take longer – anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.

Is it OK to leave an impacted tooth?

All impacted wisdom teeth do not need to be removed. If the impacted wisdom tooth is causing problems, then it will probably have to be removed, but not otherwise. An impacted wisdom tooth takes place when your wisdom teeth grow at an awkward angle, or if there is not enough room for them.
