What Is Air Compressor Oil? Air compressor oil is a specialized lubricant used to prevent premature wear and tear in air compressors. It can be one of two types — natural or synthetic — and it also varies in terms of its viscosity and the additives it contains.

What type of oil is compressor oil?

There are two main types of compressor oil: standard oil (also called mineral oil) and synthetic oil. Standard (Mineral) Compressor Oil. Standard compressor oil is made by using a mineral base and are cheaper than synthetic compressor oil. Mineral oil is more volatile and is more likely to evaporate than synthetic oil.

Is compressor oil the same as engine oil?

Compressor oil is generally either a conventional or synthetic oil. The difference between engine oil and air compressor oil is that compressor oil has no detergents. While detergents can help clean an engine, those same detergents can cause the oil to carry metal shards into the cylinder wall of your air compressor.

Can I use 10W30 in my air compressor?

Can you use 10W30 in your air compressor? No. The recommendation by manufacturers of air compressors and the advice of air compressor experts is to use air compressor oils without detergents. Since 10W30 contains detergents, it should not be used.

What can I use instead of compressor oil?

• Hydraulic oil: Hydraulic oil possesses multiple qualities that make it an acceptable substitute for air compressor oils. ...
• Automatic transmission fluid: Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is primarily used in car transmissions, but some kinds can also be used in air compressors.

What Air Compressor Oil Should I Use?

Can I use SAE 30 oil in my air compressor?

You may use a synthetic or mineral oil in your air compressor and have it operate perfectly. You should avoid oils with a detergent additive, these are common in motor oils. So specify a non-detergent oil. In terms of viscosity, you'll want an SAE 30 or SAE 20 air compressor oil.

Is SAE 30 oil non detergent?

SAE 30 Non Detergent Lubricating Oil is a mineral base oil product for use in systems where non detergent oils are specified. SAE 30 Non-Detergent Lubricating Oil is recommended for use in air compressors and hydraulic systems where the use of non-detergent oils is specified.

Is SAE 30 the same as 10W30?

Older engines can use the SAE30, while the 10W30 is for modern engines. Again, the SAE30 is better for warmer temperatures while the 10W30 is suitable for varying temperature ranges and also works well in cold weather.

Can I use 10w40 instead of SAE 30?

10W40 does not meet the requirements for small engines. And SAE 30 is on the way out as being recomended. 10W30 & 5W30 are the recomended oils now. The reason is the additives and how well they lubricate.

Can I use 10w40 instead of 10W30?

If both 10w30 and 10w40 are acceptable oil options for your car, it's recommended that you use 10w40 for your car with high mileage. 10w40 is more viscous than 10w30. The thicker oil helps older engines handle higher temperatures and manage wear and tear more efficiently.

Is 5W30 the same as 10W30?

Both oils have lower viscosity at temperatures which measure the resistance of the oil to flow. However, 5w30 is much thinner compared to 10w30. 5w30 engine oils will, therefore, be able to protect the inner components of the engine faster than the 10w30 due to its low viscosity.

How do I know if oil is non-detergent?

Read the label on each container. Any motor oil which is non-detergent blend will be clearly marked as such. Conversely, any oil which is not specifically marked as non-detergent is by default, a detergent blend.

Is compressor oil non-detergent?

Phillips 66^® Air Compressor Oil is a high-quality, non-detergent circulating oil developed primarily for use in older reciprocating air compressors.

What motor oil is non-detergent?

Valvoline Non-Detergent Motor Oil SAE 30 is a general purpose non-detergent engine oil.

What is the best oil to use in an air compressor?

The Clear Choice for Lubricated Compressors

In general, manufacturers today recommend using either a 20 or 30 weight synthetic lubricant — rather than a mineral oil — to get the best results out of your industrial compressed air system.

Why do air compressors use non-detergent oil?

Use of detergent oils can cause carbon to form which shortens your compressor life. This non-detergent oil extends pump life and helps keep you operating at the optimum performance level.

Can I use bar and chain oil in my air compressor?

Yep, works fine.

Is synthetic oil non detergent?

Older vehicles and those shipped with conventional oil can also benefit from using synthetic oil, mostly because of its detergent properties. A synthetic oil can dissolve deposits left by conventional oils without leaving many of its own, resulting in a cleaner and longer-lasting engine.

Which motor oil has the most detergent?

As synthetic motor oils go, Mobil 1 is the industry benchmark. Well-regarded for its detergent qualities, Mobil 1 has been the factory-fill choice for high-performance engines for decades.

What is high detergent oil?

Used for gasoline engines, this mineral oil based oil is combined with an additive package that resists rust, oxidation, wear, and corrosion. ... This motor oil will also fight against the creation of sludge and deposits.

Do synthetic oils have detergent in them?

Not true. Valvoline synthetics include extra detergents to help clean an engine and reduce the risk of sludge. MYTH: Synthetic oils are too thin and can create blow-by and oil burn-off in older cars. ... Just like conventional motor oil, synthetic oils have a specific viscosity grade.

What happens if I put 10w40 instead of 5w30?

As posted above, mixing 5w30 with 10w40 will give you an oil that performs somewhat better in the cold than 10w40, but less good cold than 5w30, and that has a viscosity a bit higher than 5w30 but a bit lower than 10w40. Mixing different oils will not improve the performance or efficiency of the engine in any way.

What happens if I use 5w40 instead of 5w30?

In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C, as opposed to 30°C.

Can I use 5W 20 instead of 5w30?

No, changing the oil type for your engine is not recommended because 5w30 has a higher viscosity than 5w20. 5w20 oil is pretty light oil and is generally designed to work with newer engines.
