Assisted reproductive technology includes medical procedures used primarily to address infertility. This subject involves procedures such as in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, cryopreservation of gametes or embryos, and/or the use of fertility medication.

What do you mean by assisted reproductive technology?

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is used to treat infertility. It includes fertility treatments that handle both a woman's egg and a man's sperm. It works by removing eggs from a woman's body. The eggs are then mixed with sperm to make embryos. The embryos are then put back in the woman's body.

What are assisted reproductive technologies give example?

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

All treatments which include the handling of eggs and/or embryos. Some examples of ART are in vitro fertilization (IVF), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), pronuclear stage tubal transfer (PROST), tubal embryo transfer (TET), and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT).

What are types of assisted reproductive technology?

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) includes in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), and frozen embryo transfer (FET). These techniques also apply to oocyte donation and gestational carriers.

What is assisted reproductive technology Class 12?

Hint: Assisted reproductive technique is manipulation of sperm and eggs or embryos in a laboratory for producing pregnancy. It involves four technologies: intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), and frozen embryo transfer (FET).

What is the aim of assisted reproductive technology?

The goal of assisted reproductive technology (ART) should be the provision of safe, efficient and affordable care to optimise the chance(s) of having singleton pregnancies and the delivery of healthy babies. Recent advances in ART have focused on the achievement of this goal through biochemical and genetic research.

What is infertility Ncert?

Infertility is the inability to conceive or give birth to a child.

Which is cheaper IUI or IVF?

An IUI cycle—including all monitoring and the insemination procedure but not including medication—costs about $1,000. An IVF cycle—including all monitoring, the egg retrieval, and the embryo transfer but not including medication—costs about $12,000–$20,000, depending on where it's performed.

Is IUI part of ART?

The National Library of Medicine defines assisted reproductive techniques as any “clinical and laboratory techniques used to enhance fertility in humans and animals.” By this definition, intrauterine insemination (IUI), ovulation induction (OI), in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other forms of egg or sperm manipulation ...

Is IVF and assisted reproductive technology?

IVF and ICSI are forms of assisted reproductive treatment (ART) in which eggs are fertilised with sperm outside the body. IVF is used for female infertility and unexplained infertility, and ICSI is used when there is a male cause of infertility.

What are the 4 types of reproductive technology?

• Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This is the injection of a single sperm into an egg. ...
• Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). It involves collecting eggs from the ovaries, then placing them into a thin flexible tube with the sperm. ...
• Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT).

Is IVF a surgery?

IVF stands for in vitro fertilization. It's one of the more widely known types of assisted reproductive technology (ART). IVF works by using a combination of medicines and surgical procedures to help sperm fertilize an egg, and help the fertilized egg implant in your uterus.

What is IUI pregnancy?

Overview. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) — a type of artificial insemination — is a procedure for treating infertility. Sperm that have been washed and concentrated are placed directly in your uterus around the time your ovary releases one or more eggs to be fertilized.

What are the assisted reproductive techniques practiced to help in fertile couples describe any three techniques?

This subject involves procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), cryopreservation of gametes or embryos, and/or the use of fertility medication. When used to address infertility, ART may also be referred to as fertility treatment.

What are the new assisted reproductive technology?

PGD allows couples that carry a genetic disease to ensure their offspring will not be affected by this disease. 3. INVOcell – This new technology allows reducing IVF costs for couples. In regular IVF the embryo will be grown in an incubator for few days before implanted in the uterus.

Why is assisted reproductive technology an ethical issue?

Ethical issues arise around the creation, selection, and disposal of embryos, as well as around cost, coverage, access, and resource allocation. Assisted reproductive technologies can also require the use of sperm, eggs, or wombs from third parties who are not expected to play a role in raising the child.

What is the most common form of assisted reproductive technology?

In vitro fertilization (IVF), meaning fertilization outside of the body, is the most common form of ART.

What are IVF treatments?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child. During IVF , mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab.

How much does assisted reproductive technology cost?

The ART treatment costs are estimated to be $15,715 per fresh cycle and $3,812 per frozen cycle (14). Medical costs are estimated to be $28,829, $123,402, and $465,464 per singleton, twin, and triplet plus ART live birth, respectively (11).

Are IUI babies normal?

On average, a woman under 35 will have a 10 to 20 percent chance of pregnancy with each IUI, while a woman over 40 will have a two to five percent chance. “The peak IUI effect is around three to four cycles,” says Baratz. “If you're going to get pregnant [with IUI], you'll get pregnant within those attempts.”

How painful is IUI?

Does IUI Hurt? The IUI procedure should only take a few minutes and it shouldn't hurt. Some mild discomfort may occur when the speculum is inserted, or you may experience cramping when the catheter passes through the cervix. The discomfort is temporary and should be gone by the end of the procedure.

Can you choose gender with IVF?

Sex selection is only possible using IVF embryos. The term sex selection is preferable to the past term of gender selection. Gender is increasingly known as how a person identifies sexually. Whereas a child's sex is a genetic identification of an inherited male XY chromosome pairing or a female XX chromosome pairing.

What is the main difference between IVF and GIFT?

IVF places fertilized eggs inside the uterus. GIFT and ZIFT treatments, however, resemble natural conception since the eggs are placed in the fallopian tubes. In GIFT procedures, the sperm and egg are left to fertilize within the tubes.

What is IVF ZIFT GIFT?

Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) combines in vitro fertilization (IVF) and GIFT. Eggs are stimulated and collected using IVF methods. Then the eggs are mixed with sperm in the lab. Fertilized eggs (zygotes) are then laparoscopically returned to the fallopian tubes where they will be carried into the uterus.

• Using alcohol.
• Using certain illicit drugs.
• Being overweight.
• Having certain past or present infections.
• Being exposed to toxins.
• Overheating the testicles.
• Having experienced trauma to the testicles.
