Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare parasitic disease caused by the fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, which is endemic in many parts of the world. Without timely diagnosis and therapy, the prognosis is dismal, with death the eventual outcome in most cases.

What does alveolar echinococcosis mean?

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a disease caused by an infection from tiny tapeworms called Echinococcus multilocularis. The tapeworms are usually found in foxes, coyotes, dogs, and sometimes rodents. Human infections are rare, but serious side effects can occur when it happens.

What causes alveolar echinococcosis?

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) disease is caused by infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, a ~1–4 millimeter long tapeworm found in foxes, coyotes, and dogs (definitive hosts). Small rodents are intermediate hosts for E. multilocularis.

How is alveolar echinococcosis diagnosed?

After a cyst has been detected, serologic tests may be used to confirm the diagnosis. Alveolar echinococcosis is typically found in older people. Imaging techniques such as CT scans are used to visually confirm the parasitic vesicles and cyst-like structures and serologic tests can confirm the parasitic infection.

What can Echinococcus cause?

E granulosus is an infection caused by tapeworms found in dogs and livestock such as sheep, pigs, goats, and cattle. These tapeworms are around 2 to 7 mm long. The infection is called cystic echinococcosis (CE). It leads to growth of cysts mainly in the lungs and liver.

What are the symptoms of cystic echinococcosis?

Cystic echinococcosis / hydatid disease

Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting are commonly seen when hydatids occur in the liver. If the lung is affected, clinical signs include chronic cough, chest pain and shortness of breath.

Where is echinococcosis commonly found?

CE is found in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and in rare cases, North America. The parasite is transmitted to dogs when they ingest the organs of other animals that contain hydatid cysts.

How can you prevent echinococcosis?

1. Prevent dogs from feeding on the carcasses of infected sheep.
2. Control stray dog populations.
3. Restrict home slaughter of sheep and other livestock.

What is alveolar hydatid disease?

Alveolar hydatid disease: Abbreviated AHD. A parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of a microscopic tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. AHD is found worldwide, mostly in northern latitudes.

What type is related echinococcosis?

The three types of echinococcosis are cystic echinococcosis caused by E. granulosus, alveolar echinococcosis caused by E. multilocularis, and polycystic echinococcosis caused by E. vogeli or E.

Should I worry about cysts on my liver?

Liver cysts are uncommon and rarely cause symptoms. However, if they become large, they can sometimes cause pain and swelling in the abdomen, plus other symptoms. If a liver cyst is causing problems, a doctor may recommend surgery to remove the cyst.

What are the different ways by which man can acquire echinococcosis?

Humans can be exposed to these eggs by “hand-to-mouth” transfer or contamination. By ingesting food, water or soil contaminated with stool from infected dogs. This might include grass, herbs, greens, or berries gathered from fields. By petting or handling dogs infected with the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm.

Is it bad to have a cyst on your liver?

Liver cysts do not impair the liver's ability to function. The cyst(s) are usually found by ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT scan). Simple liver cysts are always benign. The only patients who require treatment for a liver cyst(s) are those who develop symptoms.

Can hydatid cyst be cured?

Further, medical treatment alone has been suggested by some for small pulmonary hydatid cysts (<7 mm diameter) [10]. However, for large and multiple pulmonary echinococcosis, case reports on the successful medical management are lacking, and surgery remains the primary treatment and only hope for cure.

Is hydatid disease curable?

Hydatid disease is a potentially serious but treatable infection that may be fatal in a small number of cases. Hydatid disease occurs worldwide and is especially common in grazing areas.

What is a hydatid sand?

Hydatid sand. The scoleces of Echinococcus tapeworms in the fluid within a primary or daughter hydatid cyst.

How is hydatid cyst diagnosed?

The diagnosis is most easily set by ultrasound or other imaging techniques such as CT-scan or MRI, combined with case history. Serology tests such as ELISA or immunoblotting can be used in addition, being 80-100% sensitive for liver cysts but only 50-56% for lungs and other organs [21].

What is an alveolar cyst?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The median alveolar cyst is a rare cyst, occurring in the bony alveolus between the maxillary central incisors. It is distinguished from a periapical cyst by the fact that adjacent teeth are vital.

What parasite causes cysticercosis?

Cysticercosis is a parasitic tissue infection caused by larval cysts of the tapeworm Taenia solium. These larval cysts infect brain, muscle, or other tissue, and are a major cause of adult onset seizures in most low-income countries.

What is anti Echinococcus treatment?

How is echinococcosis treated? E. multilocularis is treated with praziquantel, the same medication that is used to treat other tapeworm species. This medication can be given by mouth or as an injection. In rare cases, dogs may develop internal cysts related to E.

Can humans get tapeworms from sheep?

The hydatid tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) is a very important parasite as humans can become infected, with serious illness possible. However, humans do not become infected from contact with sheep or goats, or by eating sheep or goat meat or offal. Humans are generally infected from domestic dogs.

What causes hydatid cyst in liver?

Hydatid cyst of the liver is a parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The principal complications are infection, biliary duct fistula, and rupture into the peritoneum or chest.

Is Echinococcus a Cestode?

Echinococcus granulosus, also called the hydatid worm, hyper tape-worm or dog tapeworm, is a cyclophyllid cestode that dwells in the small intestine of canids as an adult, but which has important intermediate hosts such as livestock and humans, where it causes cystic echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease.

How is Taenia Solium transmitted?

solium taeniasis is acquired by humans through the ingestion of the parasite's larval cysts (cysticerci) in undercooked and infected pork. Human tapeworm carriers excrete tapeworm eggs in their faeces and contaminate the environment when they defecate in open areas. Humans can also become infected with T.

Can Echinococcus be cured?

Chemotherapy, cyst puncture, and PAIR (percutaneous aspiration, injection of chemicals and reaspiration) have been used to replace surgery as effective treatments for cystic echinococcosis. However, surgery remains the most effective treatment to remove the cyst and can lead to a complete cure.
