What is a vegetative roof system?

Vegetative roofs, also known as green roofs, are thin layers of living vegetation installed on top of conventional flat or sloping roofs. ... The challenge in designing extensive vegetative roofs is to replicate many of the benefits of vegetative open space, while keeping them light and affordable.

What is the point of a green roof?

Green roofs—sometimes referred to as 'vegetated roofs' or 'eco-roofs'—consist of a waterproofing membrane, growing medium (soil) and vegetation (plants) overlying a traditional roof. Green roofs are used to achieve environmental benefits including reducing stormwater runoff, energy use, and the heat island effect.

How does a grass roof work?

A green roof's plants remove air particulates, produce oxygen and provide shade. They use heat energy during evapotranspiration, a natural process that cools the air as water evaporates from plant leaves. ... Green rooftops offer office workers a rooftop retreat and apartment residents a place to plant gardens or relax.

Green Roof Advantages & Disadvantages

How long does a grass roof last?

In Europe, where they have been building with green roofs since the 1960s, green roofs have been known to last for from 30 to 50 years.

What are the disadvantages of green roofs?

• A greater expense than traditional roofs. Unfortunately for green roofs, they do tend to be slightly more expensive than the traditional option. ...
• An increase in weight load. ...
• Require extra maintenance.

What are the economic benefits of installing a vegetated roof?

Primary economic benefits of installing green roofs are lower energy costs, less frequent roof replacement due to greater durability, reduced stormwater management costs, and creation of job opportunities.

Can you walk on a green roof?

Yes, you can occasionally walk on a Sedum roof. For instance, when you fertilize the roof once a year, walking on the Sedum plants is not a problem. However, be careful if it freezes: it is not advisable to walk on the vegetation if the plants are frozen, you may damage them.

Is green roof expensive?

Can you put a green roof on an existing building?

One of the most important components of the green roof system is the waterproofing/roof membrane. For an existing building, the membrane should be carefully inspected to determine if it needs to be repaired or replaced before the installation. ... Green roofs can be applied on inverted or traditional roofing systems.

Do green roofs need drainage?

Drainage is so important in a green roof because you need to be able to effectively deal with large volumes of water while still providing sufficient water for your green roof to thrive. The green roof drainage layer is usually a HDPE membrane.

Do green roofs really work?

Green roof temperatures can be 30–40°F lower than those of conventional roofs and can reduce city-wide ambient temperatures by up to 5°F. ^1,2 In addition, green roofs can reduce building energy use by 0.7% compared to conventional roofs, reducing peak electricity demand and leading to an annual savings of $0.23 per ...

What are the advantages of having a thatched roof?

Thatch is also a natural insulator, and air pockets within straw thatch insulate a building in both warm and cold weather. A thatched roof ensures that a building is cool in summer and warm in winter. Thatch also has very good resistance to wind damage when applied correctly.

What happens to green roofs in the winter?

However, there is recent evidence to suggest that green roofing can add to the insulating properties of a roof, and thereby help to reduce heat loss and decrease energy consumption rates in the winter as well.

What is the difference between an extensive and intensive green roof?

This is the easiest way to remember the difference - an extensive green roof probably has a shallow layer of substrate that covers a large area, whereas an intensive green roof often has a deeper layer of substrate, confined to smaller areas. ... As the number and variety of green roofs has increased, so has the diversity.

How do you maintain a green roof?

Extensive green roofs may require watering on a regular basis, as well as the elimination of undesirable flora (such as weeds) from the area of the roof and the gravel or shingle perimeter. Which way should a green roof face?

Plant positioning becomes more important, as south-facing slopes receive far more daylight (and heat) than those on the north side of the roof. Similarly, plants on the ridgeline receive less water than those on the eaves, so species must be chosen and placed carefully.

Why should more cities incorporate green roofs?

Green roofs increase the marketability of the building. Because they reduce the urban heat island effect, reduce storm water runoff, and improve air quality, green roofs are associated with the environmental movement and give potential tenants a reason to lease space in the building.

How much does a green roof cost UK?

As an estimate in the UK the average cost per square meter of extensive green roof system is £50-100, whereas an intensive green roof system is £60-150.
