A Ring type joint flange(RTJ) is a machined metallic ring with a deep groove cut into its face. This groove rests a metal ring which gets compressed when the connecting bolts of the flange are tightened. This compression results in a leak-proof, close-fitting seal on the pipe or connection.

What are ring joint flanges used for?

The Ring Type Joint flanges are typically used in high pressure (Class 600 and higher rating) and/or high temperature services above 800°F (427°C). They have grooves cut into their faces which steel ring gaskets.

What is a ring flange?

A Ring Type Joint Flange is a type of flange that uses a metal ring that sits in a hexagonal groove as a gasket to seal the flange pair. The flanges seal when the bolts are tightened and the gasket is compressed into the groove making a metal to metal seal.

What is a ring type joint?

A ring type joint is a specialised gasket, designed to be used with flanges that have grooves in them. The advantage of this type of gasket is that it is made of metal and so creates a seal that is very strong and reliable. It will withstand the pressure of up to 1500 Bars and temperatures of up to 1000° Centigrade.

What is a joint flange?

A lap-joint flange is a two-component assembly, with a stub end that has a lap-joint ring flange placed over it. The stub end is then butt welded to the pipe, and the flange ring can be rotated to align with the mating flange. This type of flange connection is particularly useful for large or hard-to-adjust flanges.

What is a flange backing ring?

A backing ring is a drilled, flat collar which is used to bolt a flange to another flange. The ring may be made from various plastic or metallic materials, but the dimensions of the drilling of the ring, unless a custom made one, should conform to set flange tables.

Are lap joint flange raised face?

Lap Joint Facing

Lap joint flanges shall be furnished with flat faces and the lower corner of the bore shall be furnished with a rounded transition. As illustrated in Figure-1, the flared end of the stub end protrudes from the flange and acts as a raised face.

What is ring joint gasket?

Ring joint gaskets are metallic sealing ring suitable for high pressure and high temperature applications. They are manufactured in two kinds of cross section: octagonal and oval accordance. Ring joint gasket are used in connection with RTJ flange, generates a strong seal between two mating flanges.

How does a ring joint gasket work?

The working of ring joint gaskets (RTJ Gasket) can be explained by the axial compressive load causing them to deform and flow to irregularities in the flange grooves that it seals.

What are the different types of flanges?

Most commonly used flanges are weld neck flange, slip on flange, blind flange, socket weld flange, threaded flange and lap joint flange (RTJ Flange). This type of connection in a pipe flange allows for ease of disassembly and separation for repair and regular maintenance.

Why use flat face flanges?

The purpose of the FF flange is to avoid the bending moment that is put on the flange as the bolts are torqued. Some flange materials can easily break at this time, such as cast iron and fiberglass. ... Generally speaking, flat face flanges are used in less arduous applications, like low-pressure water piping.

What is RF flange?

Raised Face (RF) Flanges

The Raised Face flange is the most common type used in process plant applications, and is easily to identify. It is referred to as a raised face because the gasket surfaces are raised above the bolting circle face.

What is FF and RF flange?

The flange face is the surface area that hosts the gasket. The 6 available types of flange face are flat (FF), raised (RF), ring joint (RTJ), lap joint, male and female (M&F), tongue and groove (T&G). ... RF and FF flanges may have different types of “finish” (i.e. roughness on top the surface): smooth, stock and serrated.

What is a Kammprofile gasket?

The Kammprofile gasket consists of a solid metal core, serrated on both sides and covered with a soft, conforming, sealing material (filler) that is bonded to each face. This soft facing produces a gasket with low seating stress.

What is tongue and groove flange?

In the Stainless Steel Tongue & Groove Flange, the Tongue Flange is manufactured with a raised ring that is machined. into its face. The Groove Flange is produced with a matching depression machined onto its face. In order to have a watertight connection, it is. important to match the faces of these flanges.

What is the difference between R and RX ring gasket?

R gaskets, which are not designed to be pressure energized, and RX gaskets, which are pressure energized, do not makeup with the flange faces face to face.

What is the difference between oval and octagonal ring gasket?

The octagonal type has a higher sealing coefficient than the oval. Flanges with Octagonal grooves or flat bottom grooves will accept either style. The oval type is the only type RTJ that will fit oval or radius grooves.

What is a flange gasket?

A flange gasket is a gasket made to fit between two sections of pipe that are flared to provide higher surface area. ... ERIKS flange gaskets come in a variety of sizes and materials, Contact us to learn more about how ERIKS can help.

How are ring joint gasket made?

Ring Joints Gaskets

The gasket is actually 'crushed' into flange (coining & intimate contact), creating a seal by filling imperfections and leak paths with gasket material. ... Ring joing gaskets are precision engineered and machined to exact specifications with tight tolerances(ASME B16. 20, API 6A).

What is rubber gasket?

What is a rubber gasket and how is it used in all of these applications? Well, it is a mechanical seal that is used primarily to prevent leaks of gas or liquid, but can be used as a barrier between two objects, such as two metals or chemicals. They are often utilized as protection from outside elements as well.

What is non metallic gasket?

Non-metallic gaskets, or soft gaskets, are fabricated from materials such as rubber, fiber, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and graphite. The material properties make them ideal for flat-faced applications with low pressures. Metallic gaskets are fabricated from one or a combination of metals.

What is the difference between a weld neck flange and a lap flange?

A Lap Joint Flange (LJ flange/Loose flange) is a two piece device that is much like a weld-neck flange but also like a loose slip-on flange. ... The hub is the same outside diameter as the raised face (gasket contact surface) of a weld neck flange. The thickness of the hub is normally about ¼” to 3/8″.

What is the difference between a slip-on flange and a lap joint flange?

lap joint flanges are very similar to a slip-on flange, with the main difference being that it has a curved radius at the bore and face to house a lap joint stub-end. Lap joint flanges and stub-end assemblies are typically used in situations where frequent dismantling is required for for inspection.

What are lap joint stub ends for?

Lap joint stub ends are fittings used in place of welded flanges where rotating back up flanges are desired.
