In mathematics, a Cayley graph, also known as a Cayley color graph, Cayley diagram, group diagram, or color group is a graph that encodes the abstract structure of a group. Its definition is suggested by Cayley's theorem and uses a specified, set of generators for the group.

How do you make a Cayley graph?

1. Draw one vertex for every group element, generator or not. (And don't forget the identity!)
2. For every generator a_j, connect vertex g to ga_j by a directed edge from g to ga_j. Label this edge with the generator.
3. Repeat step 2 for every element (i.e. vertex) g∈G.

Why are Cayley graphs important?

Cayley graphs give a way of encoding information about group in a graph. Given a group with a, typically finite, generating set, we can form a Cayley Graph for that group with respect to that generating set.

Are Cayley graphs connected?

Every Cayley graph is connected, because the edges are de- fined by a generating set. Terminology Note The traditional way to draw a Cayley di- graph C(B,X) labels the vertices by group elements.

What makes a graph transitive?

Informally speaking, a graph is vertex-transitive if every vertex has the same local environment, so that no vertex can be distinguished from any other based on the vertices and edges surrounding it.

What is a...Cayley graph?

Is the Petersen graph Hamiltonian?

The Petersen graph has a Hamiltonian path but no Hamiltonian cycle. It is the smallest bridgeless cubic graph with no Hamiltonian cycle. It is hypohamiltonian, meaning that although it has no Hamiltonian cycle, deleting any vertex makes it Hamiltonian, and is the smallest hypohamiltonian graph.

How do you determine if a graph is transitive?

An undirected graph has a transitive orientation if its edges can be oriented in such a way that if (x, y) and (y, z) are two edges in the resulting directed graph, there also exists an edge (x, z) in the resulting directed graph.

What is a directed graph in computer science?

A directed graph (or digraph) is a set of vertices and a collection of directed edges that each connects an ordered pair of vertices. We say that a directed edge points from the first vertex in the pair and points to the second vertex in the pair.

Is the group of real numbers under addition R is finitely generated?

No uncountable group can be finitely generated. For example, the group of real numbers under addition, (R, +). Different subsets of the same group can be generating subsets. For example, if p and q are integers with gcd(p, q) = 1, then {p, q} also generates the group of integers under addition by Bézout's identity.

How many edges are there in a tree of 10 vertices?

A connected acyclic graph is a tree. A tree with n vertices has n−1 edges. Hence there are no connected acyclic graphs with 10 vertices and 10 edges.

Are Cayley graphs regular?

elements, the Cayley graph is a regular directed graph of degree.

Is algebra an abstract?

In algebra, which is a broad division of mathematics, abstract algebra (occasionally called modern algebra) is the study of algebraic structures. ... Universal algebra is a related subject that studies types of algebraic structures as single objects.

What is closure property?

The closure property means that a set is closed for some mathematical operation. That is, a set is closed with respect to that operation if the operation can always be completed with elements in the set. Thus, a set either has or lacks closure with respect to a given operation.

What is the order of group U 12?

2.24: U(12) = {1,5,7,11} is a group under multiplication mod 12.

What is a graph in computers?

A graph is an abstract data type that can be used to represent complex, non-linear relationships between objects. A graph consists of nodes (also called vertices) that are connected by edges (also called arcs). Graphs have a lot of key terms: When two nodes are connected by an edge, they are called neighbours.

How do graphs help in Organising data?

Since most of the data scientist collect is quantitative, data tables and charts are usually used to organize the information • Graphs are created from data tables • They allow the investigator to get a visual image of the observations, which simplifies interpretation and drawing conclusions • Valid conclusions depend ...

What are graphs used for in computer science?

In computer science, graphs are used to represent networks of communication, data organization, computational devices, the flow of computation, etc. One practical example is the link structure of a website could be represented by a directed graph.

Are all regular graphs Vertex Transitive?

Although every Cayley graph is vertex-transitive, there exist other vertex-transitive graphs that are not Cayley graphs.

Is a directed graph transitive?

In acyclic directed graphs

The transitive reduction of a finite directed acyclic graph G is unique, and consists of the edges of G that form the only path between their endpoints. In particular, it is always a subgraph of the given graph.

What is Automorphism graph theory?

In the mathematical field of graph theory, an automorphism of a graph is a form of symmetry in which the graph is mapped onto itself while preserving the edge–vertex connectivity. ... That is, it is a graph isomorphism from G to itself.

Why is Petersen graph not a Cayley graph?

The Petersen graph on 10 vertices is the smallest example of a vertex-transitive graph which is not a Cayley graph. ... In particular, such graphs exist for all orders divisible by a fourth power, and all even orders which are divisible by a square.

What is a simple graph in graph theory?

A simple graph is a graph that does not have more than one edge between any two vertices and no edge starts and ends at the same vertex. In other words a simple graph is a graph without loops and multiple edges. Adjacent Vertices. Two vertices are said to be adjacent if there is an edge (arc) connecting them.

Who invented zero?

The first modern equivalent of numeral zero comes from a Hindu astronomer and mathematician Brahmagupta in 628. His symbol to depict the numeral was a dot underneath a number.
