Function. The action of the sternohyoid muscle is to depress the hyoid bone after it has been elevated by the suprahyoid muscles. The elevation of the hyoid bone and thus the larynx, happens during swallowing.

What is the function of the Sternohyoid?

This group of muscles contains four main muscles: the omohyoid muscle, the sternohyoid muscle, the sternothyroid muscle, and the thyrohyoid muscle. The primary function of this group of muscles is to depress the hyoid bone during speech and swallowing.

What is the action of the Sternothyroid muscle?

Action. The sternothyroid muscles primarily depress and fix the hyoid bone and underlying larynx.

What does the omohyoid muscle do?

The primary function of the omohyoid muscle is to depress and fix the hyoid bone and underlying larynx though it also draws the hyoid bone downwards in phonation and in the terminal phase of swallowing.

What does the omohyoid connect to?

The omohyoid muscle is proximally attached to the scapula and distally attached to the hyoid bone, stabilising it. Its superior belly serves as the most lateral member of the infrahyoid muscles, located lateral to both the sternothyroid muscles and the thyrohyoid muscles.

Does the omohyoid elevate the hyoid bone?

The stylohyoid muscle moves the hyoid bone posteriorly, elevating the larynx, and the mylohyoid muscle lifts it and helps press the tongue to the top of the mouth. ... The omohyoid muscle, which has superior and inferior bellies, depresses the hyoid bone in conjunction with the sternohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles.

What Innervates the Sternohyoideus?

The sternohyoid muscle is an infrahyoid muscle of the neck that is innervated by the ansa cervicalis of the cervical plexus receiving fibers from the ventral rami of C1-C3 spinal nerves.

Does the sternohyoid elevate the larynx?

The omohyoid, sternohyoid, and thyrohyoid act to depress the hyoid bone. The thyrohyoid elevates the larynx whereas the sternothyroid depress the larynx.

What bones does the Sternocleidomastoid connect to?

It is given the name sternocleidomastoid because it originates at the manubrium of the sternum (sterno-) and the clavicle (cleido-) and has an insertion at the mastoid process of the temporal bone of the skull.

What does Sternothyroid mean in anatomy?

Medical Definition of sternothyroid

: an infrahyoid muscle on each side of the body below the sternohyoid that arises from the sternum and from the cartilage of the first and sometimes of the second ribs, inserts into the thyroid cartilage, and acts to draw the larynx downward by depressing the thyroid cartilage.

What is Geniohyoid?

The geniohyoid muscle is one of the suprahyoid muscles of the neck that is innervated by the ventral ramus of C1. Geniohyoid draws the hyoid bone up and forward during mastication and assists the opening of the mandible.

How do you treat Sternocleidomastoid pain?

Pain management: Rest, ice, heat, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help reduce pain. Some people find that alternating heat and ice is helpful. Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help a person regain strength in the neck and head. It can also help prevent chronic injuries.

What muscle elevates the hyoid bone?

The suprahyoid musculature includes the geniohyoid, mylohyoid, stylohyoid, hyoglossus, and the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. These muscles attach to the superior aspect of the hyoid bone, and their main combined function is to elevate the hyoid and larynx and move them superiorly and anteriorly.

What Innervates the Stylohyoid muscle?

Nerve supply derives from the second pharyngeal arches (facial nerve). It is the stylohyoid branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) that innervates this muscle. Sometimes, the nerve towards the posterior belly of the digastric (branch of the facial nerve) also gives a branch to the stylohyoid muscle.

What is the function of the Suprahyoid muscles and why is that function important?

The suprahyoid muscles do not only form the floor of the mouth but play an important role in chewing, swallowing and speech. In combination with the infrahyoid muscles, they are responsible for the positioning of the hyoid bone.

What is the Hyoglossus muscle?

The hyoglossus muscle is a thin, quadrilaterally shaped muscle in the upper neck and the floor of the mouth. It is one of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue. The submandibular ganglion suspended from the lingual nerve sits on it.

What are the infrahyoid muscles?

The infrahyoid muscles are a group of four paired muscles that lie inferiorly to the hyoid bone in the anterior aspect of neck. This group of muscles is also known as strap muscles. They connect hyoid, sternum, clavicle and scapula. Infrahyoid muscles are organised in two layers.

Which muscles protract retract and elevate the tongue?

The tongue has two groups of paired muscles. Extrinsic muscles (genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus, and palatoglossus) protrude, retract, depress, and elevate the tongue.

Where is the longus colli?

The longus colli muscle is a prevertebral muscle of the neck that is innervated by the anterior rami of C2-C6 from the cervical plexus. Longus colli is a weak flexor the cervical spine and when contracting unilaterally it tilts and rotates the cervical spine to the ipsilateral side.

What is the origin of Sternocleidomastoid?

Sternocleidomastoid Attachments

It originates on the anterior surface of the manubrium, and the superior border and anterior surface of the medial third of the clavicle. The SCM converges into one point and inserts on the lateral surface of the mastoid process and the nuchal line of the occipital bone.

What muscle depresses the tongue?

The hyoglossus muscle runs lateral to the genioglossus, arising from the greater cornu and anterior body of the hyoid bone and inserting in the lateral tongue between the styloglossus and palatoglossus laterally, and the inferior longitudinal muscle medially. It depresses and retracts the tongue.

What muscle do you use to stick out your tongue?

The primary function of the genioglossus muscle is to protrude the tongue anteriorly and deviate the tongue to the opposite side.

What muscle causes Hyolaryngeal depression?

Two muscle groups that suspend the hyoid, larynx, and pharynx have been proposed to elevate the hyolaryngeal complex: the suprahyoid and longitudinal pharyngeal muscles. Thought to assist both groups is the thyrohyoid, a muscle intrinsic to the hyolaryngeal complex.
