Filters. (chemistry) The replacement of a hydrogen atom of an organic compound with a sulfonic acid (-SO₃H) functional group, often by reaction with sulfuric acid at high temperatures. noun.

What is meant by term Sulphonation?

noun Chemistry. the process of attaching the sulfonic acid group, –SO3H, directly to carbon in an organic compound.

What is meant by the term nitration?

: the process of adding a nitro group to an organic compound.

What is Sulphonation explain with example?

Sulphonation is a reversible reaction that produces benzenesulfonic acid by adding sulphur trioxide and fuming sulphuric acid. The reaction is reversed by adding hot aqueous acid to benzene sulphonic acid to produce benzene.

What is the purpose of sulfonation?

Sulfonation and sulfation are major industrial chemical processes used to make a diverse range of products, including dyes and color intensifiers, pigments, medicinals, pesticides and organic intermediates.

What does sulfonate mean?

How do I choose a sulfonating agent?

For choosing a suitable sulfonation reagent and process is the avoidance of undesired side reactions, the nature and extent of which will depend upon the structure of the compound being sulfonated, the sulfonating agent, and the physical conditions used.

Is sulfonation the same as sulfation?

Sulfonation and sulfation are two important chemical processes used in many industries to add a sulfur-containing group to an organic compound. The main difference between sulfonation and sulfation is that sulfonation involves the formation of a C-S bond whereas sulfation involves the formation of a C-O-S bond.

What is meant by Oleum?

Oleum (Latin oleum, meaning oil), or fuming sulfuric acid, is a term referring to solutions of various compositions of sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid, or sometimes more specifically to disulfuric acid (also known as pyrosulfuric acid).

How does the sulfonation occur?

Sulfonation is a reversible reaction that produces benzenesulfonic acid by adding sulfur trioxide and fuming sulfuric acid. The reaction is reversed by adding hot aqueous acid to benzenesulfonic acid to produce benzene.

Is the appropriate reagent for Sulphonation of alkane answer?

(a) Nitration of an alkane. ... (b) Sulphonation of alkane: The process which involves the replacement of hydrogen atom of alkanes with a sulphonic acid group (-SO₃H) is known as sulphonation of alkane. It is carried out by heating higher alkanes (hexane or higher members) with fuming sulphuric acid.

What is nitrate made from?

Definition. Nitrate is an inorganic compound composed of one atom of nitrogen (N) and three atoms of oxygen (O); the chemical symbol for nitrate is NO₃.

What is nitration of phenol?

Nitration of Phenols. When phenol is treated with concentrated nitric acid, the nitration results in the formation of 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (commonly called picric acid). Formation of 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol.

What is meant by nitrating mixture?

a mixture of concentrated nitric acid or nitrogen oxides with inorganic compounds (H₂SO₄, BF₃, and AlCl₃) or organic compounds (for example, acetic anhydride).

What do you mean by electrophilic substitution reaction?

Electrophilic substitution reactions are chemical reactions in which an electrophile displaces a functional group in a compound, which is typically, but not always, a hydrogen atom. ... Some aliphatic compounds can undergo electrophilic substitution as well.

What is aromatic nitration?

Aromatic nitration is a class of industrially important reactions for the synthesis of chemical intermediates with direct relevance to dyes, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. The nitration reagent is a mixture of concentrated nitric and concentrated sulfuric acid (333). Obviously, a more benign route would be desirable.

What is the formula of sulphonic acid?

sulfonic acid, sulfonic also spelled sulphonic, any of a class of organic acids containing sulfur and having the general formula RSO₃H, in which R is an organic combining group.

What is the electrophile in Sulphonation reaction?

The electrophile is sulphur trioxide, and this arises in one of two ways depending on which sort of acid you are using. Concentrated sulphuric acid contains traces of SO₃ due to slight dissociation of the acid.

Which species represents the electrophile in aromatic Sulphonation?

Nitration and Sulfonation. Nitration and sulfonation of benzene are two examples of electrophilic aromatic substitution. The nitronium ion (NO₂⁺) and sulfur trioxide (SO₃) are the electrophiles and individually react with benzene to give nitrobenzene and benzenesulfonic acid respectively.

Is so3 toxic?

It is corrosive to metals and tissue. It causes eye and skin burns. Ingestion causes severe burns of mouth esophagus and stomach. The vapor is very toxic by inhalation.

What is basicity of oleum?

The basicity of oleum is Two (2). - Basicity is defined as the no of H⁺ ions an acid can give on ionization into its component ions. - Oleum is the general name of fuming sulphuric acid.

Is oleum a liquid?

Oleum 65% and 25% is a colourless to off-white fuming liquid with a strong odour. It is miscible in water and reacts violently with water.

What is oleum CryoTek?

Cryo Tek. CryoTek has got to be one of the coolest things Oleum has done outside of their Wizard Stones! This product has been extracted using their Live Resin cold extraction equipment and refined using their Honey Crystal processing.

What is alcohol sulfation?

Sulfation, also spelled Sulphation, in chemistry, any of several methods by which esters or salts of sulfuric acid (sulfates) are formed. The esters are commonly prepared by treating an alcohol with sulfuric acid, sulfur trioxide, chlorosulfuric acid, or sulfamic acid.

Which is the most widely used sulfonating agent in industries?

Sulfuric acid, which may be considered as the SO,-H,O system, is a sulfonating agent employed most frequently.

What is mean by condensation procedure in Sulphonation?

Explanation: Condensation procedures refer to the reaction of organic sulfonate “building blocks” (such as HOCH2CH2S03Na) with other organic compounds (such as long-chain acid chlorides) to form new sulfonates with altered properties, these methods include sulfoalkylation. 7.
