What is the meaning of periprosthetic?

Periprosthetic in medicine refers to a structure in close relation to an implant. Clinically it can refer to: Bone fracture or 'periprosthetic fracture' around an artificial joint, e.g. after a knee replacement.

What is periprosthetic fracture?

A periprosthetic hip fracture is a broken bone that occurs around the implants of a total hip replacement. It is a serious complication that most often requires surgery.

What is a periprosthetic knee fracture?

Knee periprosthetic fractures are defined as fractures of the femur or tibia occurring within 15 cm from the joint line or 5 cm from the endomedullary stem if present (1, 2). Patella fractures in presence of a TKA are also considered as periprosthetic fractures (1, 2).

What causes periprosthetic femur fracture?

Most frequently, periprosthetic fracture is the result of low-energy trauma, which has been shown to account for 75% of fractures, in one report (11). Significant comorbidities, osteoporosis/osteopenia, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and revision surgery are all contributing factors (3).

Medical vocabulary: What does Periprosthetic Fractures mean

What is a periprosthetic distal femur fracture?

A periprosthetic distal femur fracture is a fracture close to a knee implant. This type of fracture is often difficult to fix because of the close proximity of the two surgical implants which can sometimes interfere with proper bone healing.

Does time to surgery affect outcomes for periprosthetic femur fractures?

Conclusion: The timing of fixation of periprosthetic femur fractures does not appear to affect postoperative length of stay or mortality within 1 year.

What is a periprosthetic supracondylar femur fracture?

Topic. TKA Periprosthetic Fractures are a complication of knee arthroplasty that may involve the distal femur, the proximal tibia, or the patella.

What is femoral notching?

Notching is a violation of the anterior cortex, proximal to the femoral prosthesis, producing a defect in the bone. It often occurs intraoperatively in an effort to avoid anterior prominence of the femoral component.

Can you still walk with a broken femur?

A broken leg (leg fracture) will be severely painful and may be swollen or bruised. You usually will not be able to walk on it. If it's a severe fracture, the leg may be an odd shape and the bone may even be poking out of the skin.

What is a periprosthetic humerus fracture?

In revision procedures, periprosthetic humerus fracture frequently occurs either during implant removal or insertion; the remainder being during reaming or broaching (51,60). Most commonly the greater tuberosity is fractured during stem extraction or exposure of the glenoid.

What is a hemi surgery?

A hemiarthroplasty is a half of a joint replacement. “Hemi-“means half and “-arthroplasty” means joint replacement. A hemiarthroplasty is a rare surgery that is only performed under unique circumstances. Replacing half of a hip joint is usually done after rare traumatic injury in which the femoral head is fractured.

What is the ICD 10 code for periprosthetic femur fracture?

The ICD-10-CM correct code for a periprosthetic fracture of the femur is T84. 042A, Periprosthetic fracture around internal prosthetic right knee joint, initial encounter.

How common is PJI?

Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, the annual PJI incidence rate in the United States, expressed as a percentage of the total number of arthroplasties performed, increased from 1.99 to 2.18% for hip arthroplasties and from 2.05 to 2.18% for knee arthroplasties from 2001 to 2009 (5).

What is Periprosthetic Seroma?

Periprosthetic seroma can be defined as the collection of non-infected serous fluid around a prosthetic arterial graft.

What bacteria causes prosthetic joint infection?

Causes and Diagnoses of Prosthetic Joint Infections

Most prosthetic joint infections are the result of bacteria—often Staphylococcus aureus—present in the body or introduced during the surgery itself or subsequent procedures.

What is anterior femoral notching?

Notching of the anterior femoral cortex during primary total knee arthroplasty can occur when making an anterior femoral bone cut. To examine the increased stress caused by a notch, we used a validated 3-dimensional finite element model of the femur under gait loads.

What is distal femoral replacement?

Distal femoral replacement is an orthopaedic procedure which is most commonly associated with the sarcoma population. The distal portion of the femur (up to two thirds) is excised and replaced by a endoprosthesis incorporating a hinged total knee replacement.

What is distal femur?

The distal femur is the area of the leg just above the knee joint. Distal femur fractures most often occur either in older people whose bones are weak, or in younger people who have high energy injuries, such as from a car crash.

Is a femur bone?

The femur (thigh bone) is the largest bone in your body. The femur is the only bone in the upper portion of your leg, and it is completely covered by your thigh muscles. These include the quadriceps (quads) in the front of your thigh, hamstrings in the back, gluteal muscles, and groin muscles (adductors).

How is a periprosthetic fracture treated?

Essentially all periprosthetic fractures require some treatment. Stable nondisplaced fractures may only require protected weightbearing or cast/brace immobilization (and pain medication), but most unstable peri-implant fractures require surgical stabilization, implant replacement, or both to restore function.

How long does it take for a femur fracture to heal?

Most femoral fractures take about 4 to 6 months to heal completely, but you should be able to resume many activities before this time.

How long does it take for a distal femur fracture to heal?

Most distal femur fractures are treated with surgery. The broken bone will take a minimum of 2 months to heal. Some can take more than 6 months to heal.

What is the ICD-10 code for left periprosthetic distal femur fracture?

In this case, report ICD-10-CM codes S72. 402A (Unspecified fracture of lower end of left femur, initial encounter for closed fracture) as the principal/first listed diagnosis followed by M97. 02XA (Periprosthetic fracture around internal prosthetic left hip joint, initial encounter) as a secondary diagnosis.

Where is the shaft of the femur?

The long, straight part of the femur is called the femoral shaft. When there is a break anywhere along this length of bone, it is called a femoral shaft fracture. This type of broken leg almost always requires surgery to heal. The femoral shaft runs from below the hip to where the bone begins to widen at the knee.
