Some medical tests report results in milliequivalents per litre (mEq/L). An equivalent is the amount of a substance that will react with a certain number of hydrogen ions. A milliequivalent is one-thousandth of an equivalent. A litre measures fluid volume. It is a little bigger than a quart.

What does mEq stand for in potassium?

milliequivalent. (mEq) [mil″e-e-kwiv´ah-lent] one thousandth (10⁻³) of a chemical equivalent (see equivalent weight). Concentrations of electrolytes are often expressed as milliequivalents per liter, which is an expression of the chemical combining power of the electrolyte in a fluid.

What unit is mEq L?

The mEq/L is the ion concentration, in millimoles, multiplied by the number of electrical charges on the ion. The milliequivalent unit incorporates both the ion concentration and the charge on the ions. Thus, for ions that have a charge of one, such as sodium (Na⁺), one milliequivalent is equal to one millimole.

How do you convert mg L to mEq L?

Calcium has a molecular weight of 40.08 grams/mole Calcium has a valence of +2 The equivalent weight = (40.08grams/mole)/(2 equivalents/mole) = 20.04 grams/eq To convert to mg/meq you simply multiply g/eq by 1000 mg/g and divide by 1000 meq/eq, thus g/eq = mg/meq If your sample contains 30 mg Ca/L, what is the ...

How do you calculate mEq L?

The equation to get mEq is therefore [(30 mg)(2)]/(58.44 mg/mmol) = 1.027 mEq. Since there are 400 mL = 0.4 L, the concentration in mEq/L is therefore 1.027/0.4 = 2.567 mEq/L.

What is a mEq equal to?

Some medical tests report results in milliequivalents per litre (mEq/L). An equivalent is the amount of a substance that will react with a certain number of hydrogen ions. A milliequivalent is one-thousandth of an equivalent. A litre measures fluid volume.

How do I find my mEq weight?

The expression mEq represents the amount of solute in mg equal to 1/1000 th gram of the equivalent weight of the substance. Equivalent weight = 147/2 = 73.5 grams and 73.5 grams/1000 = 0.0735 grams or 73.5 mgs.

How many mg is equal to 1 mEq?

To convert milligrams to milliequivalents use the formula: mEq = (mg x valence) / atomic or molecular weight. One thousand milliequivalents equals one equivalent.

Is mEq same as MG?

a mEq of that ion is equal to the atomic weight of the atom in milligrams. For example, one mEq of sodium (Na+) with an atomic weight of 23 (AW) weighs 23mg.

How do you convert mg to mEq?

1. mg to mEq: Convert 750 mg of KCl (MW = 74.5 mg/mmol, valence = 1) to mEq = 10.07 mEq.
2. mg to mEq: Convert 30 mg of calcium (Ca⁺⁺) (atomic weight = 40.08 mg/mmol, valence = 2) to mEq = 1.5 mEq.
3. mg to mmol: Convert 100 mg of phosphorus (P) (atomic weight = 31 mg/mmol) to mmol = 3.23 mmol.

Why is milliequivalent used?

The unit for measuring solutes is the mole. ... The unit of milliequivalent takes into consideration the ions present in the solution (since electrolytes form ions in aqueous solutions) and the charge on the ions. Thus, for ions that have a charge of one, one milliequivalent is equal to one millimole.

How many equivalents are in 0.40 mole of K+?

The number of equivalents of the given amount of ion is 0.40 Eq. Explanation: In regards of an ion, the number of equivalents are the number of moles of an ion to neutralize the charge of opposite ion.

What is a milliequivalent and how is it used to measure electrolyte reactivity?

Milliequivalents measure the number of ionic charges or electrovalent bonds in a solution and therefore serve as an accurate measure of the chemical (physiological) combining power, or reactivity, of a particular electrolyte solution.

How much will 40 mEq of potassium raise serum potassium?

We found that for every 10 mEq of potassium administered, overall there was a mean increase in serum potassium of 0.13 mEq/L. Intravenous potassium increased the serum potassium levels a little more than oral potassium (0.14 per 10 mEq versus 0.12 per 10 mEq administered, respectively).

How many 99 mg potassium pills should I take?

The label suggests that this supplement helps support electrolyte balance, normal pH, and proper muscle contractions. The dosage information states that a person should take one capsule one to five times daily with food. NOW Supplements Potassium Citrate 99 mg is available for purchase online.

How many mg are in 20 mEq of potassium?

The potassium chloride extended-release tablets, USP 20 mEq product is an immediately dispersing extended-release oral dosage form of potassium chloride containing 1500 mg of microencapsulated potassium chloride, USP equivalent to 20 mEq of potassium in a tablet.

How many mg are in a milliequivalent of potassium?

Potassium Chloride Extended-Release Capsules, USP8 mEq (600 mg) and 10 mEq (750 mg)Rx OnlyP10009-1 08/11.

How many mEq is 99 mg of potassium?

It is sold over-the-counter as tablets or capsules providing up to 593 mg of potassium gluconate, thereby containing 99 mg or 2.53 milliequivalents of elemental potassium.

How many mg of magnesium are in a mEq?

Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate 1 g = 98.6 mg or 8.1 mEq or approximately 4 mmol magnesium (Mg²⁺).

What is Milliequivalent calculation?

• mEq = represents amount in milligrams, of a solute equal to 1/1000. of its gram equivalent weight taking into account the valence of the ions. mEq = mg x valence. atomic, molecular or formula weight.

How do you convert mEq L to PPM?

1 meq/L = 2.8 dKH = 50 ppm CaCO3 equivalents. So just multiply your reading that is in meq/L by 50 to get ppm.

How do you explain Milliequivalents?

1. An equivalent is the amount of a substance that will react with a certain number of hydrogen ions. A milliequivalent is one-thousandth of an equivalent.
2. A litre measures fluid volume. It is a little bigger than a quart.
