Definitions of cytologist. a biologist who studies the structure and function of cells. type of: biologist, life scientist. (biology) a scientist who studies living organisms.

What is a simple definition of cytology?

cytology, the study of cells as fundamental units of living things.

What does the word cytology mean in medical terms?

Cytology is the study of individual cells of the body, as opposed to histology which is the study of whole human tissue itself. ... Cytology can also be used to diagnose many non-cancerous medical conditions such as infections and systemic diseases.

What is the best definition of cytology?

1a : a branch of biology dealing with the structure, function, multiplication, pathology, and life history of cells : cell biology. b : the cellular aspects of a phenomenon, process, or structure liver cytology.

What is cytology explain with example?

Cytology: The medical and scientific study of cells. ... For example, a common example of diagnostic cytology is the evaluation of cervical smears (referred to as the Papanicolaou test or Pap smear). In order for cytologic evaluation to be carried out, the material to be examined is spread onto glass slides and stained.

What is Cytology ? ( Clear & Complete Overview )

What is the difference between biopsy and cytology?

A cytology test is different from a biopsy. During a biopsy, tissue from a certain area of the body is removed and analyzed for cancer. A cytology test removes and studies a fewer number of cells. With a cytology test, the structure and function of the cells collected are studied under a microscope.

What is lung cytology?

Cytology is a useful tool in the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. In cases where the cytological diagnosis is certain, the tissue biopsies can be simultaneously tested for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGRF) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene mutations.

Why it is called cytology?

The discipline was founded by George Nicolas Papanicolaou in 1928. Cytopathology is generally used on samples of free cells or tissue fragments, in contrast to histopathology, which studies whole tissues. Cytopathology is frequently, less precisely, called "cytology", which means "the study of cells".

Is cytology the same as pathology?

Is cytology part of pathology? Cytology (cytopathology) is a branch, or subspecialty, of pathology. In medicine, pathology deals with the laboratory examination of cells in samples of body tissue or fluids for diagnostic purposes.

What is a cell?

In biology, the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body. A cell has three main parts: the cell membrane, the nucleus, and the cytoplasm. ... Parts of a cell. A cell is surrounded by a membrane, which has receptors on the surface.

What is a cytology test done for?

Diagnosing diseases by looking at single cells and small clusters of cells is called cytology or cytopathology. It's an important part of diagnosing some types of cancer.

What is cytology and why is it important?

Cytology is the exam of a single cell type, as often found in fluid specimens. It's mainly used to diagnose or screen for cancer. It's also used to screen for fetal abnormalities, for pap smears, to diagnose infectious organisms, and in other screening and diagnostic areas.

What is the role of Cytology in Diagnosing?

Diagnostic Cytology is the study of cells to identify disease. It may be used to diagnose various types of cancer and certain infections. Proper specimen collection, labelling of specimen and complete requisition are imperative.

What is exfoliative cytology?

: the microscopic study of cells shed or obtained from the body especially for diagnostic purposes (as in determining the presence or absence of a cancerous condition)

What is the study of cells called?

Cell biology is the study of cell structure and function, and it revolves around the concept that the cell is the fundamental unit of life.

What does negative cytology mean?

Negative. This means no cancer cells were identified in your urine sample. Atypical. This indicates that some abnormalities were found in your urine sample cells, but they weren't abnormal enough to be considered cancer.

What are the advantages of cytology?

• Safe. The procedures that are used to get cytological samples are extremely safe. ...
• Simple. It is well known that getting most cytological samples is simple. ...
• Quick. ...
• Cost effective.

How accurate are cytology test?

Urine cytology is associated with a significant false-negative rate, especially for low-grade carcinoma (10-50% accuracy rate). The false-positive rate is 1-12%, although cytology has a 95% accuracy rate for diagnosing high-grade carcinoma and CIS. Urine cytology is often the test used for diagnosis of CIS.

Can cytology be wrong?

It's much more common than you might have thought. The false-positive rate of endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) cytology is thought not to exceed 1%.

How does cytology work?

Cytology is the examination of cells from the body under a microscope. In a urine cytology exam, a doctor looks at cells collected from a urine specimen to see how they look and function. The test commonly checks for infection, inflammatory disease of the urinary tract, cancer, or precancerous conditions.

What is microscopic cytology?

Cytology is the microscopic examination of cell samples. These samples can be collected from any area of the body.

What is effusion in the lungs?

Pleural effusion, sometimes referred to as “water on the lungs,” is the build-up of excess fluid between the layers of the pleura outside the lungs. The pleura are thin membranes that line the lungs and the inside of the chest cavity and act to lubricate and facilitate breathing.

How long can you live with pleural effusion?

Patients with Malignant Pleural Effusions (MPE) have life expectancies ranging from 3 to 12 months, depending on the type and stage of their primary malignancy.

What are atypical cells in a lung biopsy?

Atypical adenomatous hyperplasia is the pre-cancer that can become adenocarcinoma (another type of non-small cell lung cancer). If either of these is present in a biopsy, it may mean that there is invasive carcinoma elsewhere in the lung that was not sampled on biopsy.

What does a histology report tell you?

A histopathology report describes the tissue that has been sent for examination and the features of what the cancer looks like under the microscope. A histopathology report is sometimes called a biopsy report or a pathology report.
