Amniota, a group of limbed vertebrates that includes all living reptiles (class Reptilia), birds (class Aves), mammals (class Mammalia), and their extinct relatives and ancestors.

What do all amniotes have in common?

Characteristics of Amniotes

All amniotes have three membranes surrounding the fetus of one offspring. These membranes are the amnion, or protective layer, the top chorion layer, and the waste-absorbing allantois. These layers can be seen in the image of a chicken egg, below.

Do all amniotes have eggs?

Because reptiles, birds, and mammals all have amniotic eggs, they are called amniotes. The duck-billed platypus and some other mammals also lay eggs. But most mammals have evolved amniotic eggs that develop inside the mother's womb, or uterus, and so lack a shell.

Which of these are amniotes?

Among turtles, lungfish, fish, and amphibians, only the turtles are classified as amniotes.

What is an Amniote easy definition?

: any of a group (Amniota) of vertebrates that undergo embryonic or fetal development within an amnion and include the birds, reptiles, and mammals.

An Introduction to the amniotes

What do you mean by amniotes in zoology?

Amniotes are a clade of tetrapod vertebrates comprising the reptiles, birds, and mammals. Amniotes are characterized by having an egg equipped with an amnion, an adaptation to lay eggs on land or retain the fertilized egg within the mother.

Are amniotes monophyletic?

Amniotes is the group of reptiles, birds, and mammals. They all develop through an embryo that is enclosed within a membrane called an amnion. ... Unlike the reptiles, amniotes are a monophyletic group.

What are non amniotes?

Temnospondyls. Temnospondyls are an order of extinct anamniotes that are one of the earliest groups of tetrapods. They were a tremendously successful group, ranging from small, salamander-sized terrestrial forms to giant 6-meter aquatic predators.

Are fish non amniotes?

The anamniotes are an informal group comprising the fishes and the amphibians, the so-called "lower vertebrates", which lay their eggs in water. They are distinguished from the amniotes, the "higher vertebrates" (reptiles, birds and mammals), which lay their eggs on land or retain the fertilized egg within the mother.

Which of the following group will be amniotes?

Amniota, a group of limbed vertebrates that includes all living reptiles (class Reptilia), birds (class Aves), mammals (class Mammalia), and their extinct relatives and ancestors.

Do amniotes have a placenta?

The amniotic egg is the key characteristic of amniotes. ... In mammals, membranes that are homologous to the extra-embryonic membranes in eggs are present in the placenta. Additional derived characteristics of amniotes include waterproof skin, due to the presence of lipids, and costal (rib) ventilation of the lungs.

What makes an amniotic egg special?

The key features of an amniotic egg are shown. The amniotic egg is the key characteristic of amniotes. In amniotes that lay eggs, the shell of the egg provides protection for the developing embryo while being permeable enough to allow for the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Which of the following do not lay amniotic eggs?

Amphibia - Amphibians

Most amphibians live part of their lives in the water and part of their lives on the land. Amphibians are four-legged animals that don't have amniotic eggs. Amniotic eggs have a membrane called the amnion.

Why is egg often called an amniotic egg?

The fluid inside the amnion, called amniotic fluid, acts as a cushion to help protect the developing embryo from physical danger. Eggs that contain an amnion to protect the embryo are referred to as amniotic eggs. ... There is a yolk sac inside of the egg that provides the nutrients to feed the developing embryo.

Did amniotes evolve from amphibians?

The first amniotes evolved from amphibian ancestors approximately 340 million years ago during the Carboniferous period.

Are all amniotes tetrapods?

Tetrapods can be defined in cladistics as the nearest common ancestor of all living amphibians (the lissamphibians) and all living amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals), along with all of the descendants of that ancestor.

What is the difference between amniotes and Anamniotes?

Amniotes are higher vertebrates who have an amnion during their embryonic stage. Anamniotes are lower vertebrates who do not have an amnion during their embryonic stage.

What are fish considered?

Fishes are a group of animals that are completely aquatic vertebrates that have gills, scales, swim bladders to float, most produce eggs, and are ectothermic. Sharks, stingrays, skates, eels, puffers, seahorses, clownfish are all examples of fishes.

What is meant by lower vertebrate?

The author's definition of 'lower vertebrates' is somewhat broader than that used by zoologists. The term will be used to cover birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish-in other words, the non- mammalian vertebrates-whereas the conventional approach is to include birds with the mammals as 'higher' vertebrates.

Are amniotes Paraphyletic?

Reptilia (green field) is a paraphyletic group comprising all amniotes (Amniota) except for two subgroups: Mammalia (mammals) and Aves (birds); therefore, Reptilia is not a clade. In contrast, Amniota itself is a clade, which is a monophyletic group.

Why don t amniotes need to return to water to reproduce?

The amnion is a critical divergence within vertebrates that allows the embryos to survive out of the water. This enabled amniotes to reproduce on land and so move into drier environments—free of the need to return to water for reproduction as amphibians.

Are eggs a Synapomorphy?

Eggs with amniotic fluid is a synapomorphy for Amniota, but a symplesiomorphy for all of its subclades (e.g., Mammalia, Reptilia, Testudines, etc.) ... Eggs with amniotic fluid evolved in the common ancestor of all amniotes, and is a synapomorphy for Amniota; Etc.

Do all reptiles lay eggs?

All reptiles, including aquatic ones, lay their eggs on land. Reptiles reproduce sexually through internal fertilization; some species are ovoviviparous (lay eggs) and others are viviparous (live birth).

What is Foetal membrane?

Fetal membranes are the membranes surrounding the embryo or fetus. These membranes are the amnion, the chorion, the allantois, and the yolk sac. ... The fluid serves as a cushion to the developing fetus. The amnion is a membrane that lies next to the chorion.

What are the four membranes associated with amniotic eggs?

The embryos of reptiles, birds, and mammals produce 4 extraembryonic membranes - amnion, yolk sac, chorion and allantois. In birds and most reptiles, the embryo with its extraembryonic membranes develops within a shelled egg. The amnion protects the embryo in a sac filled with amniotic fluid.
