Cumulonimbus clouds are menacing looking multi-level clouds, extending high into the sky in towers or plumes. More commonly known as thunderclouds, cumulonimbus is the only cloud type that can produce hail, thunder and lightning.

Why are cumulonimbus clouds so powerful?

Cumulonimbus (from Latin cumulus, "heaped" and nimbus, "rainstorm") is a dense, towering vertical cloud, forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents. ... These clouds are capable of producing lightning and other dangerous severe weather, such as tornadoes and hailstones.

What are the characteristics of a cumulonimbus cloud?

Cumulonimbus clouds are one of the most recognisable cloud types, characterised by their threatening anvil-shaped tops and the torrential rain, hail, thunder and lightning that they often produce. They are the tallest clouds we see, and can extend through the entire height of the troposphere.

Do cumulonimbus clouds produce hurricanes?

These cumulonimbus clouds (or, more commonly, rain clouds) will “stack” on top of one another, rising higher and higher, creating a tropical disturbance. ... As winds in the column start to spin faster and faster, a tropical depression, tropical storm or even a full-fledged tropical cyclone (i.e., a hurricane) can form.

How do cumulonimbus clouds create hail?

Hail forms inside of cumulonimbus clouds (cumulonimbus clouds are anvil shaped and usually thunderstorm-producing clouds) when there is a strong updraft to carry graupel pellets back up into the cloud. [Graupel is simply frozen raindrops, similar to sleet].

Why are cumulonimbus clouds dangerous?

What is the feature of cumulonimbus cloud over Africa?

High above the African continent, tall, dense cumulonimbus clouds, meaning 'column rain' in Latin, are the result of atmospheric instability. The clouds can form alone, in clusters, or along a cold front in a squall line.

How can rain and hail fall from the same cumulonimbus cloud?

Clouds are just lots of drops of water all stuck together. When clouds get so full of water droplets that they can't hold any more, the water falls back to the ground as rain! Sometimes the water droplets freeze and fall to the ground as snow, sleet, or hail.

How do cumulonimbus clouds form kids?

Cumulonimbus, from the Latin cumulus ("heap") and nimbus ("rainstorm", "storm cloud"), is a dense towering vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability, forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents.

Do altostratus clouds rain?

Altostratus clouds are “strato” type clouds (see below) that possess a flat and uniform type texture in the mid levels. ... However, altostratus clouds themselves do not produce significant precipitation at the surface, although sprinkles or occasionally light showers may occur from a thick alto- stratus deck.

Is there a nimbus cloud?

Nimbus clouds are clouds that produce precipitation that reach the ground in the form of rain, snow or hail. There are two types of clouds, namely, cumulonimbus (cumulus clouds) and nimbostratus (stratus clouds).

Can cumulus clouds produce rain?

Normally, cumulus clouds produce little or no precipitation, but they can grow into the precipitation-bearing congests or cumulonimbus clouds. Cumulus clouds can be formed from water vapour, supercooled water droplets, or ice crystals, depending upon the ambient temperature.

Where does a cumulonimbus cloud form?

Cumulonimbus clouds form in the lower part of the troposphere, the layer of the atmosphere closest to the surface of the Earth. This region due to evaporation and the greenhouse effect produces alot of the warm updrafts that make creation of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds possible.

What causes a cumulonimbus cloud to have an anvil top quizlet?

What causes the anvil top of a cumulonimbus cloud? strong winds at high altitudes help shape the anvil top of a thunderstorm cloud. The flat top of the anvil is produced when the rising cloudy air encounters the very stable air of the tropopause and lower stratosphere.

What weather does cirrocumulus clouds bring?

What weather is associated with cirrocumulus clouds? Precipitation from cirrocumulus clouds never reaches the surface, meaning that these clouds are usually associated with fair weather. However, their appearance can often prelude stormy weather, meaning you should make the most of the Sun while you still can.

How does a cumulonimbus cloud look like?

Cumulonimbus clouds are large, tall clouds that are dark on the bottom, bring thunderstorms, have a fuzzy outline toward the upper part of the cloud and may have a flat top called an anvil. Besides thunderstorms, these clouds can bring hail, tornadoes and snow, and they also form during hurricanes.

Why do Stratonimbus storms last all day?

Why do stratonimbus storms last all day long? Stratus clouds cover the whole sky, so when they are blown by wind it will take a long time to pass. They don't move with the wind. The day is longer with those kinds of clouds.

What do altostratus clouds do?

Altostratus clouds often form ahead of a warm or occluded front. As the front passes, the altostratus layer deepens and bulks out to become nimbostratus, which produces rain or snow. As a result, sighting it can usually indicate a change in the weather is on the way.

How would you describe altostratus?

Altostratus clouds are mid-level, gray or blue-gray clouds that usually cover the whole sky. The Sun or moon may shine through an altostratus cloud, but will appear watery or fuzzy. ... Occasionally, rain falls from an altostratus cloud. If the rain hits the ground, then the cloud has become a nimbostratus.

What kind of cloud is a cumulonimbus cloud?

What are cumulonimbus clouds? Cumulonimbus clouds are menacing looking multi-level clouds, extending high into the sky in towers or plumes. More commonly known as thunderclouds, cumulonimbus is the only cloud type that can produce hail, thunder and lightning.

What do cirrocumulus clouds indicate?

Cirrocumulus clouds are usually seen in the winter and indicate fair, but cold weather. In tropical regions, they may indicate an approaching hurricane. Altostratus clouds are gray or blue-gray mid level clouds composed of ice crystals and water droplets.

What causes Lowclouds?

In a warm front, a warm and a cold air mass meet. The lighter warm air is forced to rise over the cold air mass, leading to cloud formation. The lowering clouds indicate that the front is drawing near, giving a period of rain in the next 12 hours.

What is the difference between cumulonimbus and nimbostratus clouds?

Nimbostratus clouds form a thick, dark layer across the sky. They are often thick enough to blot out the sun. Like cumulonimbus clouds, they are associated with heavy precipitation, but, unlike cumulonimbus, you can't pick out individual nimbostratus clouds.

Can the same storm produce both rain and snow?

If the atmosphere is cold enough to keep the drops frozen, we get snow or one of the other forms of frozen precipitation. Sometimes the same storm will drop snow on a mountain, and drop rain on the valley next door, just because the air over the valley is warmer.

Why can't Hail be formed during rain from a nimbostratus cloud?

Hail is produced in strong thunderstorms with tilted updrafts. You would never see hail (or graupel) falling from a nimbostratus cloud. ... Hail would never fall from a nimbostratus cloud they are too thin and the updrafts are too weak.

What is the heaviest cloud recorded?

Astronomers have discovered the largest and oldest mass of water ever detected in the universe — a gigantic, 12-billion-year-old cloud harboring 140 trillion times more water than all of Earth's oceans combined.
