Balantidium coli is an intestinal protozoan parasite that causes the infection called balantidiasis. While this type of infection is uncommon in the United States, humans and other mammals can become infected with Balantidium coli by ingesting infective cysts from food and water that is contaminated by feces.

What is Balantidiasis disease?

Balantidiasis is a rare intestinal infection caused by the bacterium, Balantidium coli, a single celled parasite (ciliate protozoan) that frequently infects pigs but on occasion (rarely) infects humans.

Is Balantidium coli causes dysentery?

Balantidium coli (B. coli), the largest protozoon affecting humans, is a ciliate organism often associated with pigs. The greenish-yellow trophozoites may measure up to 120 × 150 µm and are capable of attacking the intestinal epithelium, creating ulcers and causing bloody diarrhea similar to that of amebic dysentery.

What is the common name for Balantidium coli?

Balantidium (=Neobalantidium) (=Balantioides) coli, a large ciliated protozoan, is the only ciliate known to be capable of infecting humans. It is often associated with swine, the primary reservoir host.

What are the signs and symptoms of Balantidiasis?

Common symptoms of Balantidiasis include chronic diarrhea, occasional dysentery (diarrhea with passage of blood or mucus), nausea, foul breath, colitis (inflammation of the colon), abdominal pain, weight loss, deep intestinal ulcerations, and possibly perforation of the intestine.

Is balantidiasis occupational disease?

Epidemiology: Worldwide; highest prevalence rates in tropical and subtropical regions. Occupational disease oflivestock producers, veterinarians, and abattoir workers. Spo- radic cases or outbreaks from consumption of water or food contaminated with trophozoites or cysts.

What is Crypto disease?

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Both the parasite and the disease are commonly known as “Crypto.” There are many species of Cryptosporidium that infect animals, some of which also infect humans.

Is Balantidium coli an amoeba?

Balantidium coli is a ciliated protozoan that primarily infects swine and nonhuman primates. The infection is rare in dogs^18-22 and is frequently associated with exposure to swine. Trophozoites reside in the colon and result in ulcerative colitis.

What is the intermediate host for Balantidium coli?

No intermediate host, as occurs with many other parasitic species, is needed. FIG. 1. Life cycle of Balantidium infection in humans.

Is Balantidium coli zoonotic?

Balantidium coli (B. coli) is an emerging ciliated protozoan parasite of zoonotic importance which causes a disease balantidiasis in a variety of host species including pigs, camels, ruminants, equines and even human.

What is Excystation and Encystation?

Encystation is the process of forming the cyst; this event takes place in the rectum of the host as feces are dehydrated or soon after the feces have been excreted. Excystation produces a trophozoite from the cyst stage, and it takes place in the large intestine of the host after the cyst has been ingested.

What organism causes bacillary dysentery?

Bacillary dysentery is an intestinal infection caused by a group of Shigella bacteria which can be found in the human gut.

Is amoebic dysentery a bacteria?

It results from bacteria called Shigella. The disease is called shigellosis. About 500,000 people in the U.S. get it every year. Amoebic dysentery comes from a parasite called Entamoeba histolytica.

What are the different types of intestinal infections?

Bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Clostridium), viruses ( Norwalk agent, Rotaviruses), and parasites (Giardia, Entamoeba, Ascaris) can all cause disease in the intestines. Most of the time infections of the intestines result in diarrhea or dysentery, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping.

Which protozoan is the cause of Chagas disease?

The protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, causes Chagas disease, a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs.

What are the infective and diagnostic stages of Balantidium coli?

Balantidium coli has 2 developmental stages: a trophozoite stage and a cyst stage. (See Morphology and Transmission for further descriptions of the stages.) The cyst is the infective stage of Balantium coli life cycle.

What is the epidemiology of Balantidium coli?

Balantidiasis is found worldwide and has an overall estimated prevalence of 1%. Balantidiasis epidemics have occurred in psychiatric hospitals in the United States. Cases of B coli infection from cattle, pigs, and rats, among others, have also been previously reported from India.

What does Balantidium coli use to penetrate the intestinal mucosa?

Balantidium coli primarily is found in the lumen of the large intestines. It can penetrate into the mucosa layer of the large intestine and start to cause ulcers. Balantidium coli produces an enzyme called hyaluronidase to penetrate into the mucosa layer. Pigs are a great host for Balantidium coli.

Where is Entamoeba histolytica found in the human body?

Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic parasite that is primarily found in the colon; however, for unknown reasons, it can become invasive, breaching the gut barrier and migrating toward the liver causing amoebic liver abscesses.

What type of infection is Cryptosporidium?

Key points. Cryptosporidiosis is an infection that causes diarrhea. It is caused by a parasite.

Is Cryptosporidium a virus or bacteria?

It is caused by microscopic germs—parasites called Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium, or “Crypto” for short, can be found in water, food, soil or on surfaces or dirty hands that have been contaminated with the feces of humans or animals infected with the parasite.

What are the effects of Cryptosporidium?

Cryptosporidium Infection Symptoms

Watery diarrhea that can be severe and lead to dehydration. Stomach cramps. Mild fever. Nausea or vomiting.

Is coccidiosis a bacterial disease?

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces or ingestion of infected tissue. Diarrhea, which may become bloody in severe cases, is the primary symptom.

Where can you get Amoebiasis?

The parasite lives only in humans and is passed in the feces (poop) of an infected person. A person gets amebiasis by putting anything in their mouth that has touched infected feces or by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the parasite. It can also be spread sexually by oral-anal contact.
