Phycomycetes are characterised by the presence of aseptate, coenocytic mycelium. They reproduce asexually by zoospores or aplanospores. Sexual reproduction is by the formation of a zygospore.

Which of these is a characteristic of phycomycetes but not of zygomycetes?

Phycomycetes often contain cellulose in their cell walls. No other fungi have cellulose.

What are phycomycetes give 2 examples?

Phycomycetes are found in aquatic and damp environments. The mycelium is coenocytic. Common examples are Rhizopus, Mucor, Albugo, etc.

What is another name of phycomycetes?

Mycology. Mucormycosis (formerly zygomycosis or phycomycosis) is the name most widely familiar for any infection caused by a fungus that is a member of the class Zygomycetes (formerly Phycomycetes).

Is class phycomycetes a fungi?

Members of phycomycetes are known as algae fungi.

Fungi Classification - Phycomycetes

Is Phycomycetes are coenocytic?

Note: Phycomycetes is a class of fungi in which mycelium is coenocytic and aseptate. No cell walls present.

Are Phycomycetes parasites?

Phycomycetes are the group of fungi characterised by aseptate and coenocytic mycelium. They can live in a wide variety of habitat. They can be aquatic, saprotrophic, parasitic or could be living in moist and damp places.

Where are Phycomycetes found?

Phycomycetes organisms are found throughout the world in soil, in animal manure, and on fruits. Fungi of this class frequently are found in refrigerators and are commonly known as bread molds [617–619]. Basidiobolus and Entomophthora can be isolated from decaying organic matter.

What is Dikaryon and Dikaryophase?

In the stage intervening between plasmogamy and karyogamy the cells often contain two nuclei or Dikaryons (n+n). Such cells are called dikaryotic cells. The phase is known as Dikaryophase which takes place in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes.

What are the economic importance of Phycomycetes?

Some of the terrestrial Phycomycetes are the most destructive parasites of crop plants and certain insects. Again others often cause spoilage of foodstuff, various fruits and vegetables. Some others are utilized in industrial fermentations. There are also species which inhabit damp soil.

Which of the following are characters of phycomycetes fungi?

• Aseptate coenocytic hyphae.
• Hyphal wall can be made of cellulose (sometimes chitin or fungal cellulose)
• Known as algal fungi.
• Reproduction can be isogmanous or heterogamous.

Which among phycomycetes is true?

Phycomycetes are characterised by aseptate coenocytic hyphae. Asexual reproduction occurs by motile zoospores or non-motile aplanospores produced endogenously inside sporangia. Members of Phycomycetes are found in aquatic habitats and on decaying wood in moist and damp places or as obligate parasites on plants.

Is phycomycetes the same as zygomycetes?

Mycology. Mucormycosis (formerly zygomycosis or phycomycosis) is the name most widely familiar for any infection caused by a fungus that is a member of the class Zygomycetes (formerly Phycomycetes).

What asexual spores are called in phycomycetes?

In phycomycetes asexual reproduction takes place by means of zoospores or aplanospores. In ascomycetes spores are formed as a result of asexual reproduction.

Is Puccinia an Ascomycetes?

No, Puccinia is a basidiomycete, commonly called rust fungus.

What is the nature of mycelium of phycomycetes?

The phycomycetes are the type of fungi which perform sexual as well as asexual reproduction. The mycelium of this fungi is coenocytic and aseptate. Coenocytic means the hyphae contains many cells in the cytoplasm.

What kind of hyphae are present in phycomycetes?

Phycomycetes is an obsolete polyphyletic taxon for certain fungi with aseptate hyphae.

Which of the following is Coprophilous?

Video Solution: Which of the following is coprophilous? ... Ascomycetes is coprophilous.

What happens in Plasmogamy?

Plasmogamy, the fusion of two protoplasts (the contents of the two cells), brings together two compatible haploid nuclei. At this point, two nuclear types are present in the same cell, but the nuclei have not yet fused.

Why Phycomycetes are called lower fungi?

The lower Fungi or Phycomycetes are:

The septa usually remain suppressed in the actively growing stage. (b) Asexual reproduction takes place by sporangiospores and sometimes by conidia. The sporangiospores are motile (zoospores) in aquatic species and non-motile in the terrestrial species.

Do Phycomycetes form fruiting bodies?

Zygospore is the fruiting body in Phycomycetes, Ascocarp is the fruiting body in Ascomycetes.

How do deuteromycetes reproduce?

The deuteromycetes, commonly called molds, are “second-class” fungi that have no known sexual state in their life cycle, and thus reproduce only by producing spores via mitosis, This asexual state is also called the anamorph state.
