Anatomically, the spinal cord runs from the top of the highest neck bone (the C1 vertebra) to approximately the level of the L1 vertebra, which is the highest bone of the lower back and is found just below the rib cage.

Where the spinal cord is located?

The spinal cord and meninges are contained in the spinal canal, which runs through the center of the spine. In most adults, the spine is composed of 33 individual back bones (vertebrae). Just as the skull protects the brain, vertebrae protect the spinal cord.

Where does the spinal cord start and end?

About the spinal cord and nerve roots

The spinal cord originates in the brain, exiting through a hole at the skull base called the foramen magnum and coursing through the spinal canal of the cervical, thoracic and upper lumbar spine before ending most commonly between the first and second lumbar vertebrae.

Where is S1 located in your back?

S1, also called the sacral base, is the upper and wider end of the triangular-shaped sacrum. S1 consists of a body on the top with wing-shaped bones on either side, called the alae. At the back, the S1 vertebra contains a long bony prominence called the median ridge.

What are the 3 main parts of the spinal cord?

The spinal cord comprises three parts: the cervical (neck), thoracic (chest), and lumbar (lower back) regions. Three layers of tissue protect the spinal cord: the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.

How to Read a Spine MRI

What is the anatomy of the spinal cord?

The spinal cord is a cylindrical structure of nervous tissue composed of white and gray matter, is uniformly organized and is divided into four regions: cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L) and sacral (S), (Figure 3.1), each of which is comprised of several segments.

Is the spine the same as the spinal cord?

The spine is made up of a column of bones called vertebrae (spinal column). The spinal cord, a long, fragile structure contained in the spinal canal which runs through the centre of the spine, is protected by the vertebrae.

What's in spinal cord?

Like the brain, the spinal cord consists of gray and white matter. The butterfly-shaped center of the cord consists of gray matter. The front wings (usually called anterior or ventral horns) contain motor nerve cells (neurons), which transmit information from the brain or spinal cord to muscles, stimulating movement.

What bones protect the spinal cord?

Vertebrae. The individual bones of the spine are the vertebrae. These are the building blocks of the spinal column. The vertebrae protect and support the spinal cord.

How the spinal cord connects to the brain?

It runs down from the brain through a canal in the center of the bones of the spine. These bones protect the spinal cord. Like the brain, the spinal cord is covered by the meninges and cushioned by cerebrospinal fluid. Spinal nerves connect the brain with the nerves in most parts of the body.

What are the two main functions of the spinal cord?

The spinal cord functions primarily in the transmission of nerve signals from the motor cortex to the body, and from the afferent fibers of the sensory neurons to the sensory cortex. It is also a center for coordinating many reflexes and contains reflex arcs that can independently control reflexes.

How many spinal cords are there?

The spinal cord is located in the vertebral foramen and is made up of 31 segments: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 1 coccygeal. A pair of spinal nerves leaves each segment of the spinal cord. The length of the spinal cord is about 45 cm in men and 43 cm in women.

What part of the spinal cord controls the legs?

The lumbosacral spinal cord and nerve supply legs, pelvis, and bowel and bladder.

Which portion of the brain is located closest to the spinal cord?

The medulla is the part of the brain stem closest to the spinal cord.

Where is the ventral horn located?

The ventral horn of the spinal cord is one of the grey longitudinal columns found within the spinal cord. It contains the cell bodies of the lower motor neurons which have axons leaving via the ventral spinal roots on their way to innervate muscle fibers.

What happens if your spinal cord hurts?

Emergency signs and symptoms of a spinal cord injury after an accident include: Extreme back pain or pressure in your neck, head or back. Weakness, incoordination or paralysis in any part of your body. Numbness, tingling or loss of sensation in your hands, fingers, feet or toes.

Where is T1 and T2 located on the spine?

Where is the T1 Vertebra Located? The thoracic vertebrae T1 is located in the upper part of the back. It's the first section of the thoracic vertebrae, so it is located between the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) and T2.

Can your spine affect your brain?

Spinal cord injuries can cause widespread and sustained brain inflammation that leads to progressive loss of nerve cells, with associated cognitive problems and depression, researchers have found for the first time.

What is the name of the nerves that run down your back?

The sciatic nerve starts in the lower spine

A combination of 5 nerve roots that exit from inside the lower lumbar and upper sacral spine—L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3—forms the sciatic nerve.

Is the spinal cord a bone?

The spinal cord lies inside the spinal column, which is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae. Five vertebrae are fused together to form the sacrum (part of the pelvis), and four small vertebrae are fused together to form the coccyx (tailbone).

What are the 5 parts of the spine?

The spine is composed of 33 bones, called vertebrae, divided into five sections: the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine sections, and the sacrum and coccyx bones. The cervical section of the spine is made up of the top seven vertebrae in the spine, C1 to C7, and is connected to the base of the skull.

What is in the brain?

Weighing about 3 pounds in the average adult, the brain is about 60% fat. The remaining 40% is a combination of water, protein, carbohydrates and salts. The brain itself is a not a muscle. It contains blood vessels and nerves, including neurons and glial cells.

Where is the T9 and T10 located?

The T9, T10, T11, and T12 vertebrae form the base of the thoracic spine. The thoracic spine is made up of 12 segments total between the cervical and lumbar levels.

What lies outside the brain and spinal cord?

The other is the peripheral nervous system (PNS), that part of the nervous system that lies outside the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) connects the central nervous system (CNS) to sensory organs (such as the eye and ear), other organs of the body, muscles, blood vessels and glands.

What parts of the body does the spinal cord control?

• Motor Functions - directs your body's voluntary muscle movements.
• Sensory Functions – monitors sensation of touch, pressure, temperature and pain.
• Autonomic Functions – regulates digestion, urination, body temperature, heart rate, and dilation/contraction of blood vessels (blood pressure).
