But although their necks can measure up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) alone, they have, like most mammals, just seven neck vertebrae. Fossil evidence shows that, once upon a time, giraffes had much shorter necks. ... Lamarck's idea suggested they stretched their necks and passed the stretching down through generations.

When did giraffes get long necks?

According to the known swath of fossil giraffes, significant neck elongation began around 14 million years ago during the Late Miocene – after the lineage to which the relatively short-necked okapi split off – and by about 5 million years ago giraffes of modern proportions had evolved.

Why did giraffes evolve long necks?

The French zoologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck is usually credited as the first person to suggest that long necks have evolved in giraffes because they allow them to get to the parts other herbivores cannot reach. ... Long-necked giraffes were more likely to survive hard times than their short-necked rivals.

Did giraffes adapt long necks?

The giraffe's long neck is a perfect adaptation to the animal's natural habitat. Clearly the giraffe evolved this uncommon and helpful trait in order to reach those nourishing leaves.

Are there any short-necked giraffes?

Did giraffes evolve from dinosaurs?

No. Brachiosaurus was a dinosaur that lived around 150 million years ago. By the time that Brachiosaurus became extinct, there were already early mammals called Eutheria living alongside the dinosaurs. The Eutheria gave rise to the placental mammals and then the Artiodactyla and, eventually, the modern giraffe.

How would Charles Darwin explain why giraffes have long necks?

In terms of the giraffe example, Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection would suggest that a giraffe was born with a longer neck by random chance. ... Having access to more food allowed the giraffe to live longer and reproduce more, ultimately leading to more long-neck giraffes.

What animal did giraffes evolve from?

Some scientists have long presumed today's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis, right), which includes a handful of subspecies scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, evolved from an animal that looked like its close cousin the okapi (Okapia johnstoni, left), which lives in the tropical forests of central Africa.

Why are giraffes tongues blue?

Giraffe tongues are very long and have the ability to grab on to plants. ... The dark blue color at the front of their tongue is like built in sunscreen, keeping it from getting burned when they eat from the treetops in the hot African sun!

Why are giraffes tongues so long?

The giraffe's long tongue allows it to reach the highest, tastiest leaves while avoiding the sharp thorns. Its tongue also features a thick, tough layer that protects it from being cut by the thorns. ... Thus, giraffes have less competition for acacia leaves. Acacia leaves are also an important source of water.

How did giraffe's neck evolve?

Charles Darwin was the first to propose that giraffes evolved into the elegantly long-necked creatures they are because successive generations realised that extra vertebrae helped them get access to tender leaves on top of trees.

Why does a giraffe have a long neck because he can't stand to?

It appears obvious: the giraffe's neck, which can grow to as much as two metres in length, has been selected because it gives its owner exclusive access to the topmost leaves of the trees, and no other animal can reach them. This, then, is an adaptation designed to avoid competition for food with other animals.

What theory explains how the giraffes short neck become longer and these characteristics were believed to be inherited by their offspring?

A Darwinian theory of evolution posits that it was through random variation that some giraffes had longer necks than others. Thanks to their long necks, they were able to reach leaves high up in the trees in their environment.

How does a giraffe's neck get longer and longer?

The latest theory – and it's a surprise this hasn't come up before, given biologists' fixation with it – is that the long necks are the result of sexual selection: that is, they evolved in males as a way of competing for females. Male giraffes fight for females by “necking”.
