Most passenger cars will recommend 32 psi to 35 psi in the tires when they're cold. ... For the most accurate reading (not to mention the most consistent one), make sure the car has been sitting overnight or at least has been parked for a few hours. Do not inflate your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself.

Does tire pressure have to be exact?

Perhaps the most important point in all of this is to find and use the correct tire pressure for your vehicle and that is not the number on the side of the tire! Most vehicles have an optimum tire pressure of 33-36 psi, but the specific pressure for your vehicle can be found in the car's owner's manual.

Should all 4 tires be the same PSI?

Often, the vehicle manufacturers specify more air pressure in the back for this very reason. (Sometimes, not often, they specify a couple of pounds lower in the rear, but rarely more than 2 psi.) ... A good rule of thumb would be to keep the same variance front to rear that the vehicle manufacturer recommends.

How much difference in tire pressure is acceptable?

So, in your case, I'd recommend that you put 35 or 36 psi in the tires and just leave it there. You won't notice any difference in tire wear, handling or braking. And even if the temperature drops 50 degrees, you'll still have 30 psi or more, which should keep your “low pressure” warning light turned off.

Is 40 psi too high for tires?

The recommended tire pressure for most passenger and sports cars is between 32 and 40 psi, but you should check your vehicle's manual for more specific instructions. The recommended tire pressure is set with cold tires so be sure to check them before or after a long ride.

What is the Proper Tire Pressure?

Should I inflate my tires to max psi?

Do not inflate your tires to the pressure listed on the tire itself. That number is the maximum pressure the tire can hold, not the recommended pressure for the vehicle.

Why do dealers overinflate tires?

So why do dealerships and shops over-inflate your tires then? Dealerships don't intentionally over-inflate your tires, in fact they likely inflate them exactly where they should be. However due to the differences in heat, the air in the tires will expand once the tires move from the cool shop to the warm road.

Is it OK to drive with uneven tire pressure?

Compromised Safety

There are a variety of issues that can occur if you drive on overinflated tires. Most seriously, overinflated tires are at greater risk for a blowout. A tire blowout can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and negatively affect braking distance, endangering yourself and others on the road.

What can uneven tire pressure do?

When a tire is under-inflated or over-inflated, it loses stability, negatively affecting handling, cornering, and stopping. Eventually the tire will also start to wear unevenly. Under-inflated tires tend to show wear on the outside edges of the tread, while over-inflated tires show wear down the middle of the tread.

What is proper tire pressure?

Most passenger cars will recommend 32 to 35 psi in the tires when they're cold. The reason you check them cold is that as tires roll along the road, friction between them and the road generates heat, increasing tire pressure.

Should front tires be inflated more?

In short, they're not. Tyre pressures are normally higher in the front than the rear, to compensate for the extra weight of the engine and transmission, especially on front-wheel-drive cars. ... If you have a full complement of passengers and luggage, car makers often recommend pumping up the rear tyres to compensate.

How do you fix uneven tire pressure?

1. Remove the Valve Stem Cap. Unscrew the plastic cap that sits over the valve stem. ...
2. Use a Tire Pressure Gauge to Measure the Existing Pressure. ...
3. Check the Recommended Tire Pressure for Your Car. ...
4. Inflate the Tires Using an Air Pump. ...
5. Inflate the Tires at the Nearest Gas Station (Optional)

Can tire pressure affect alignment?

Poor air pressure can also cause the vehicle to pull to one side or another. If the pressure varies from one tire to another, it changes the height causing the alignment to change.

What is the 4 psi rule?

The 4psi rules states that “if your tyres are inflated correctly then the tyre pressure measured when the tyres are hot (after travel) will be 4psi greater than the pressure measured when they were cold (before travel)”.

Why is my low tire pressure light on but tires are fine?

In most cases, the warning light may be triggered by a tire that is 10% to 15% low in air pressure. Cold or icy weather also has a tendency to lower the air pressure inside the tires. Taking the car for a short drive will heat up the tires and increase the tire pressure.

How do I know when to stop putting air in my tires?

Unscrew the valve stem cap and press the end of the tire gauge onto the stem. If you hear hissing, press harder until it stops. Now, check the tire pressure number in PSI, pounds per square inch. With pencil gauges, the plastic insert will shoot out; the place where it stops indicates the tire pressure.

How do I know if my tires are properly inflated?

To find your tires' proper inflation level, look for a sticker on the driver-side doorjamb. It displays the vehicle weight restriction and tire information including the recommended tire pressure. The info is also found in the maintenance or car-care section of your vehicle's owner's manual.

How do you know if your tires are over inflated?

1. Lack Of Traction. The first sign that your tires are over-inflated is a loss of traction. ...
2. Excessive Wear On Center Treads. ...
3. An Uncomfortable Ride. ...
4. The Car Behaving Oddly.

How much uneven tire wear is normal?

The normal wear for a tire is an even reduction in tread depth across the tire. A tire is considered worn out and should be replaced when the tread has worn to less than 1/16 inch deep. You can determine if you have too little tread depth by sticking a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head toward the tire.

How do you know which tire is low?

First, park your vehicle on a flat surface. Then, from the front and back of the vehicle at a distance, watch the tires of your vehicle. Looking at both sides of the vehicle, see if part of the tire is protruding, even just the slightest bit. This is a sign that your tire pressure is low.

Why is my tire pressure light on even after filling tires?

If you've added air but the air pressure warning light stays on, there's a problem with your Tire Pressure Monitoring System or you have a slow leak. ... Quick Tip: If the TPMS warning light comes back on after you've filled the tire with air, recheck the tire to make sure it is inflated to the proper air pressure.

At what PSI will a tire explode?

Under hot weather and highway conditions, the temperature of the air inside the tire rises about 50 degrees. That increases the pressure inside the tire about 5 psi. The burst pressure of a tire is about 200 psi.

Is it better to over or under inflated tires?

Underinflated tires are the more dangerous of the two. ... Over-inflation may not sound harmful, but it can definitely cause increased wear and tear on tires. An overinflated tire is much stiffer and does not bend as much as it should, reducing the amount of the tire that can contact the road.

How do I know if my tire pressure gauge is accurate?

You can check the air pressure in a tire with the gauge in question and then check the same tire with another quality tire pressure gauge. When there is a significant difference in the readings (3 or more psi) between the two gauges, one or both gauges might be inaccurate.

Do Over inflated tires wear faster?

Overinflated tires round out on the tread section and cause the center to wear down significantly faster than the outer edges. This could cause them to last only half as long as they typically would. Overinflation can cause loss of traction.
