One half of the cerebrum, the part of the brain that controls muscle functions and also controls speech, thought, emotions, reading, writing, and learning. The right hemisphere controls the muscles on the left side of the body, and the left hemisphere controls the muscles on the right side of the body. Enlarge.

What is cerebellar hemisphere?

the largest regions of the cerebellum, the cerebellar hemispheres are two divisions of the cerebellum on either side of the vermis. They are functionally subdivided into lateral and medial portions. See spinocerebellum and cerebrocerebellum.

What are the 4 cerebral hemispheres?

The cerebral cortex is divided lengthways into two cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. Traditionally, each of the hemispheres has been divided into four lobes: frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital.

What are the specific functions of each cerebral hemisphere?

In general, the left hemisphere controls speech, comprehension, arithmetic, and writing. The right hemisphere controls creativity, spatial ability, artistic, and musical skills. The left hemisphere is dominant in hand use and language in about 92% of people.

Which part of the cerebral hemisphere is functioning?

KEY POINTS. The left hemisphere is dominant with regard to language and logical processing, while the right hemisphere handles spatial perception. The brain is separated into the frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes. The frontal lobe is associated with executive functions and motor performance.

Cerebral Hemispheres

What is the outer part of the cerebral hemisphere known as and what does it consists of?

…outer layer of the duplicate cerebral hemispheres is composed of a convoluted (wrinkled) outer layer of gray matter, called the cerebral cortex.

What are the parts of cerebral hemisphere?

The cerebrum is divided into the left and right hemispheres by a deep longitudinal fissure; the two hemispheres remain in contact and communication with one another by the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere further subdivides into a frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobe.

What does the right cerebral hemisphere do?

The right cerebral hemisphere controls movement of the left side of the body. Depending on the severity, a stroke affecting the right cerebral hemisphere may result in functional loss or motor skill impairment of the left side of the body.

What are the 3 major parts of the brain and their functions?

• The cerebrum fills up most of your skull. It is involved in remembering, problem solving, thinking, and feeling. ...
• The cerebellum sits at the back of your head, under the cerebrum. It controls coordination and balance.
• The brain stem sits beneath your cerebrum in front of your cerebellum.

What are the 4 lobes of the brain and their function?

Each side of your brain contains four lobes. The frontal lobe is important for cognitive functions and control of voluntary movement or activity. The parietal lobe processes information about temperature, taste, touch and movement, while the occipital lobe is primarily responsible for vision.

What are the five lobes of the cerebral hemisphere?

Each cerebral hemisphere is divided into five lobes, four of which have the same name as the bone over them: the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe. A fifth lobe, the insula or Island of Reil, lies deep within the lateral sulcus.

Where are the 4 lobes of the brain located?

The four lobes of the brain are the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes (Figure 2). The frontal lobe is located in the forward part of the brain, extending back to a fissure known as the central sulcus. The frontal lobe is involved in reasoning, motor control, emotion, and language.

What are the three basic regions of the cerebral hemisphere?

The cerebral cortex provides most of the functions of the cerebrum and is organized into three major regions: sensory, association, and motor areas.

Where is the cerebellum on the brain?

Cerebellum. The cerebellum (“little brain”) is a fist-sized portion of the brain located at the back of the head, below the temporal and occipital lobes and above the brainstem. Like the cerebral cortex, it has two hemispheres. The outer portion contains neurons, and the inner area communicates with the cerebral cortex ...

What are the two hemispheres of cerebellum?

Like the cerebrum, the cerebellum is divided into two lateral hemispheres, which are connected by a medial part called the vermis. Each of the hemispheres consists of a central core of white matter and a surface cortex of gray matter and is divided into three lobes.

Does the cerebellum control emotions?

The cerebellum is particularly well-suited to regulate emotion, as connections with limbic regions, including the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the septal nuclei have been posited (Anand, Malhotra, Singh, & Dua, 1959; Annoni, Ptak, Caldara-Schnetzer, Khateb, & Pollermann, 2003; Harper & Heath, 1973; Schmahmann, 2004; ...

What are the 4 main parts of the brain?

Rotate this 3D model to see the four major regions of the brain: the cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, and brainstem. The brain directs our body's internal functions. It also integrates sensory impulses and information to form perceptions, thoughts, and memories.

What are the 3 main regions of the vertebrate brain?

The vertebrate brain is divided into three major divisions, the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain.

What is the strongest part of the brain?

The large, wrinkly cerebrum is the most powerful part of your brain, responsible for all your conscious actions, speech, and feelings.

What's on the left side of the brain?

The left side of the brain is concerned with language, number skills, reasoning, scientific skills, spoken language and right-hand control. The left side is the hub of language, where you “assemble” the language (words and sentence structure) you want to communicate.

What is the amygdala function?

The amygdala is commonly thought to form the core of a neural system for processing fearful and threatening stimuli (4), including detection of threat and activation of appropriate fear-related behaviors in response to threatening or dangerous stimuli.

What is the left hemisphere responsible for?

In general, the left hemisphere or side of the brain is responsible for language and speech. Because of this, it has been called the "dominant" hemisphere.

Is the occipital lobe on the left or right hemisphere?

It is located at the rear of the brain, behind the temporal and parietal lobes and below the occipital bone of the skull. There are two sides to the occipital lobes, in both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, separated by cerebral fissure (a deep groove separating the two cerebral hemispheres).

What is the hippocampus?

Hippocampus is a complex brain structure embedded deep into temporal lobe. It has a major role in learning and memory. It is a plastic and vulnerable structure that gets damaged by a variety of stimuli. Studies have shown that it also gets affected in a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Where is the cortical?

The cerebral cortex is the outer covering of the surfaces of the cerebral hemispheres and is folded into peaks called gyri, and grooves called sulci. In the human brain it is between two and three or four millimetres thick, and makes up 40 per cent of the brain's mass.
