Originally designed for use in nautical navigation, Mercator's projection is a map of the Earth's surface on which straight lines, called rhumb lines, represent a course of constant compass heading. ... Rather, the shortest distance between two points is a great circle, whose shape is shown as the red line on this map.

How does great circles appear track on Mercator chart?

To plot a great circle track on a Mercator chart the navigator joins his point of departure and his point of arrival by a straight line drawn on a gnomonic chart, and then transfers a series of positions on this straight line—read off in latitude and longitude—to his Mercator chart.

How would a great circle appear on a projection map?

Great circles transform to straight lines via the gnomonic projection. Since meridians (lines of longitude) and the equator are great circles, they are always shown as straight lines on a gnomonic map. ... Other parallels (lines of latitude) are depicted as concentric circles.

What does a Mercator map show correctly?

Description. Mercator is a conformal cylindrical map projection that was originally created to display accurate compass bearings for sea travel. An additional feature of this projection is that all local shapes are accurate and correctly defined at infinitesimal scale. It was presented by Gerardus Mercator in 1569.

Which projection is the great circle chart?

On the Mercator projection, rhumb lines (lines which do not change direction) are straight lines and great circles, with the exception of meridians and the Equator, are curved. The second commonly used projection is the gnomonic projection, primarily used for Great Circle charts.

What is the shape of great circle on a Mercator projection?

A short account of the theory of the Mercator map projection will first be given. Mathematically this map projection is a conformal cylindrical one. The parallels and meridians are projected in a certain manner on the cylinder tangent to the earth at the equator.

What is a great circle route in geography?

great circle route, the shortest course between two points on the surface of a sphere. It lies in a plane that intersects the sphere's centre and was known by mathematicians before the time of Columbus. ... Navigational radio signals also follow great circle paths.

Why is Mercator good for navigation?

This projection is widely used for navigation charts, because any straight line on a Mercator projection map is a line of constant true bearing that enables a navigator to plot a straight-line course. ...

What happens to the circles in the Mercator projection?

Although the linear scale is equal in all directions around any point, thus preserving the angles and the shapes of small objects, the Mercator projection distorts the size of objects as the latitude increases from the equator to the poles, where the scale becomes infinite.

How are Mercator charts made?

Mercator found that to keep the rhumb lines straight he had to make lines of latitude move away from each other as they moved north and south of the equator. In order to do this, he created a projection that preserved the 90° angles between the latitude and longitude lines.

How do you draw a great circle on a map?

1. Enter the locations that you want to create a Great Circle between in the box at the top. 3. Click on the first point marker, then the second, then click “End At Last Point”; the Great Circle Route will be drawn between the two.

What is a great circle in geography class 9?

Answer: A great circle is the largest possible circle that can be drawn around a sphere. ... The Equator is another of the Earth's great circles. If you were to cut into the Earth right on its Equator, you'd have two equal halves: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

How does the great circle route work?

Planes travel along the shortest route in 3-dimensional space. This route is called a geodesic or great circle. While map projections distort these routes confusing passengers, the great circle path is the shortest path between two far locations. This is why pilots fly polar routes saving time and distance.

What is great circle vertex?

The vertex is the point on a great circle that is closest to the pole; by knowing the latitude of the vertex, if it is too high. There are two vertices on a great circle, 180° apart; the nearer vertex is usually the chosen one for navigational calculation.

Which of the following statement about the Mercator projection is are true?

Which of the following statements about the Mercator Projection is (are) true? The Mercator Projection accurately reflects navigational directions and distorts the actual size and position of continents.

Which of the following is a characteristic of the Mercator projection?

Which of the following is a characteristics of the Mercator projection? The size and shape of countries in the higher latitudes are greatly exaggerated. The size of all countries is accurate, but the shape is distorted. Countries near the Equator appear 50 percent larger than countries in the middle latitudes.

Why is Mercator projection distortion?

Because the linear scale of a Mercator map increases with latitude, it distorts the size of geographical objects far from the equator and conveys a distorted perception of the overall geometry of the planet.

What did Gerardus Mercator accomplish?

Gerardus Mercator was a Flemish cartographer, philosopher, and geographer who is best known for his creation of the Mercator map projection. On the Mercator projection parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude are drawn as straight lines so that they are useful for navigation.

What does Mercator projection mean in geography?

: a conformal map projection of which the meridians are usually drawn parallel to each other and the parallels of latitude are straight lines whose distance from each other increases with their distance from the equator.

What are the advantages of Mercator projection?

Advantages of Mercator's projection: - preserves angles and therefore also shapes of small objects - close to the equator, the distortion of lengths and areas is insignificant - a straight line on the map corresponds with a constant compass direction, it is possible to sail and fly using a constant azimuth - simple ...

What is the value of great circle?

1)All meridians of longitude are great circles. Great circle are of importance to navigation and aviation. 2)The shortest route between any two places is along the arc of the great circle which passes through them.

What is great circle sailing method?

Great circle sailing involves the solution of courses, distances, and points along a great circle between two points. Great Circle Sailing is used for long ocean passages.

What is a great circle which of the parallels of latitude is a great circle?

The Equator is the longest circle of latitude and is the only circle of latitude which also is a great circle.
