Struts are structural components of certain vehicles' steering and suspension systems. They usually consist of a spring and a shock absorber. ... Additionally, they help dampen vehicle jolts and improve your vehicle's steering and alignment.

How much does it cost to replace struts on a car?

On average, expect to pay somewhere between $450 and $900 to replace a pair of struts. An individual strut assembly will cost about $150 to $300 so you're looking at around $300 to $600 for parts alone. Labor alone will set you back about $150 to $300 for the pair.

What happens to a car with bad struts?

Worn-Out Shocks and Struts Can Damage Other Car Components

If your shocks and struts are malfunctioning, they may put additional pressure on the control arms, ball joints, and other suspension components. Over time, these issues may result in a car accident. They can also require costly, time-intensive repairs.

What are the symptoms of bad struts?

• Instability at highway speeds. ...
• Vehicle “tips” to one side in turns. ...
• The front end dives more than expected during hard braking. ...
• Rear-end squat during acceleration. ...
• Tires bouncing excessively. ...
• Unusual tire wear. ...
• Leaking fluid on the exterior of shocks or struts.

How do I know if my car needs new struts?

1. Bumpy ride. The most obvious sign of a problem with your shocks or struts is that your car is giving you a much more uncomfortable ride than normal. ...
2. Steering problems. ...
3. Braking problems. ...
4. Fluid leaks. ...
5. Unusual tire tread wear. ...
6. Mileage.

How Do Struts and Shocks Work?

What noise does a bad strut make?

Bad strut sounds are usually described as a hollow clunking or banging type of sound. You'll typically hear the noise when the vehicle is traveling over irregularities in the road. Most front strut assemblies also have a bearing at the top.

Can you drive with bad struts?

No. It needs to be repaired as soon as possible. A strut works by absorbing the bounce of your car driving over bumps in the road. ... Driving with a broken strut will be extremely uncomfortable for you and your passengers, and is unsafe in an emergency.

What happens if you don't replace your struts?

Safety: Worn struts result in longer stopping times and/or distances as the vehicle weight can shift (sometimes unexpectedly) during braking. ... Wear on other parts: Driving with bad struts accelerates the wear on tires, as well as other components of the suspension system, such as the springs.

What is the average life of a strut?

On average, if your car has been “babied,” you can expect your shocks/struts to last about 10 years. If you have really used your car like a workhorse, 5 years is probably all you can expect. This means that for the average driver, 7 or 8 years is the maximum life expectancy of most shocks and struts.

Are struts worth replacing?

Struts don't need to be replaced unless your vehicle is bouncing like it's on a pogo stick or bottoms out in potholes and over railroad tracks — or unless a mechanic finds that they're leaking fluid or have been damaged. In some climates, they can also rust.

Are struts expensive?

When it comes to struts, they are slightly more expensive. To replace a pair of struts, the total cost on average is between $400 and $1000, including wheel alignment. An individual strut assembly costs approximately $150 to $350, while the labor cost is $100 to $300 for a pair.

Will bad struts wear tires?

Bad shocks or struts will cause the wear to be uneven. For instance, you may have a flat patch of a tire on the left side and then have wear in the center of the tire in another place. Bad shocks or struts can even ruin brand new tires and cause them to need replacement prematurely.

Is it hard to replace struts?

Installing the new strut is the reverse of the removal, but it's very tricky and sometimes impossible to get it into place and hold it there while you get the nuts started. So enlist the help of a friend for the actual installation. Once it's in place, torque the strut mount nuts to spec.

Should you replace all 4 struts at once?

Shocks and struts should always be replaced in pairs or, better yet, all four, for even, predictable handling and control. ... Remember, too, that whenever the struts are replaced, it becomes important to check the alignment, as it may have changed, to protect your vehicle tires and assure maximum safety.

What happens if front struts fail?

When they wear out, the suspension will sag, causing the front tires to absorb more heat on the inner or outer portion of the tire. ... Engine: if the struts fail completely, the reduced drag produced by misaligned suspension can also put more stress on internal engine components and lead to significant damage.

What causes struts to go bad?

Corrosion. Another cause of strut failure is contamination from water, oil, or dust. These substances can seep into the unit, corroding its components (like seals and bearings). When the seals of the shock absorber corrode, the oil inside can leak out of the body, preventing the shock absorber from damping effectively.

Can I get an alignment with bad struts?

we recommend replacing the upper strut bearings and bushings along with the struts, and getting a wheel alignment once the new parts are installed. this is a job best left to professionals, since the strut assembly contains dangerous, high-tension springs.

Do I need shocks or struts?

Without shocks, the vehicle would bounce out of control! They help keep the tires in contact with the road instead of bouncing up in the air after a bump. A strut combines the shock absorber and coil spring components into a single unit. In addition to absorbing bumps and jolts, struts also provide structural support.

Are shocks and struts the same thing?

What is the difference? A shock absorber on an automobile does one thing and one thing only, keeps the car from bouncing. Struts are considerably different. Struts are a structural part of the suspension system and are mounted to the chassis of the vehicle on the top, and they come down through.

What do front struts do?

They are mounted at the top of the chassis at the front-end of most front-wheel-drive vehicles. However, struts are not limited to front-wheel-drive configurations. The primary purpose of the struts is to support the weight of the vehicle while also absorbing surface impacts and ensuring a smooth ride.

Should I replace shocks and struts at the same time?

Shocks and struts should always be replaced at the same time. Unlike some steering and suspension components, the left and right shocks/struts tend to wear down at the same rate. If the left shock or strut is damaged, there's a good chance the right side also needs to be replaced.

How much does it cost to replace all 4 struts?

A typical shock and strut replacement can set you back anywhere between $450 and $1,100 on parts and labor combined. An individual shock and strut assembly costs around $150 to $900, while estimated labor costs for replacing a shock and strut assembly can range anywhere from $150 to $300 per assembly.

Will new struts raise my car?

Also false. Shocks/struts don't do anything to change ride height unless they have adjustable perches. All they do is dampen the amount of jounce and rebound caused by the springs when going over bumps.

What do new struts feel like?

For the first hundred or so miles after installing your new gear, the driver will notice that the suspension feels a little stiff and bouncy. This is normal and happens primarily for two reasons: First, a new set of shocks and struts needs to be broken in just like anything else.

How long does it take to replace struts on a car?

It takes about 2 to 3 hours to replace struts. The time to get the struts replaced depends on the skill level of who is replacing them and how rusted the bolts and joints are. When you have worn-out struts, you have to replace them because they can cause more damage.
