Valve stem seals prevent oil from contaminating the air/fuel mixture in the engine's combustion chamber. They also prevent intake and exhaust gases from contaminating the oil in the cylinder head and the rest of the engine. Valve stem seams are like any other round seal, only much smaller.

What happens when valve stem seals go bad?

When you have a bad valve seal, the oil that collects at the front cover of the head will end up burning when you push on the accelerator after coasting for a while. This is apparent especially when going downhill and again will be indicated by the excessive smoke that leaves the tailpipe.

How much does it cost to replace valve stem seals?

A valve stem seal replacement cost will vary. On average the cost will run between $900 to $1,800. The cost will depend on the make and model of the vehicle as well as where you take the vehicle.

Are valve stem seals necessary?

Different than other seals in the engine, valve stem seals play an important role in lubrication. Valve stem seals allow a controlled amount of oil to lubricate the valve stem as it moves in the valve guide. The amount of oil that passes by the valve stem seal must be precisely controlled.

How do you know if your valve stem seals are bad?

1. Cold Engine. One of the most noticeable signs of worn or cracked valve stem seals will be just after a cold engine start. ...
2. Idle and Stop and Go Driving. ...
3. Off-Throttle Braking. ...
4. Oil Consumption. ...
5. Excessive Smoke.

Valve Stem Seals Explained

What causes valve seals to fail?

Valve seals normally fail, due to a clearance problem; between the valve and the valve guide in the cylinder head. So, when loose; the valve is able to move side to side in the bore and wears out the seal.

What does a bad valve sound like?

Valve train noise, is similar to a clicking sound of a, sewing machine. The sound frequency of the valve train noise is, one-half the crankshaft speed. A clicking lifter is one, very common, valve train noise.

How do you stop a valve stem leak?

1. Remove the valve cap and spray the area with window cleaner. ...
2. Replace the valve core by removing it with a valve core removal tool and inserting a new valve core. ...
3. Raise the vehicle with a jack and remove the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

What is the purpose of valve seals?

Valve stem seals prevent oil from contaminating the air/fuel mixture in the engine's combustion chamber. They also prevent intake and exhaust gases from contaminating the oil in the cylinder head and the rest of the engine.

When should you replace valve stem seals?

1. Valve stem seals often last more than 150,000 miles under normal driving conditions.
2. Infrequent oil and filter changes may cause valve stem seals to fail prematurely.
3. Improper installation often causes valve stem seals to fail shortly after installation.

Can you replace valve stem seals without removing head?

After miles of service, the valve seals in the cylinder head of your vehicle wear out and become brittle. ... On most vehicles, it's possible to replace these valve seals without removing the head. With the right tools, learn to perform this job in your garage and save a lot on repair costs.

How much is a valve job?

Know what price you should pay to get your vehicle fixed. The average cost for a valve adjustment is between $246 and $336. Labor costs are estimated between $220 and $278 while parts are priced between $26 and $58.

Can valve seals cause misfire?

Worn valve guides and seals will allow air to leak. As a result, causing lean misfire and a rough idle.

Can new valve stem seals leak?

If the valve stem seals are new, it's unlikely they would leak even from sloppy guides.

What are valve stem seals made of?

Valve stem seals are made from a variety of materials: Nylon. PTFE rubber. Nitrile rubber.

Can you fix a leaking valve stem?

If the valve stem is leaking, you can easily fix it yourself with a valve stem tool. You only need a valve core tool and a package of new valve cores (both inexpensive). ... Then remove the old core with a valve core tool, screw in a new core (just snug it up; it's easy to strip the threads), and then refill the tire.

Can valve stems be replaced?

In most cases the the fastest way to replace a valve stem is to take it to a tire shop and have them remove the tire and replace the valve stem using aid of a tire machine. However, for instances where this is not an option, a tire can be removed and the valve stem changed manually.

How do you tighten a valve stem?

Tightening a Loose Valve Stem

Hold the valve stem between your fingers and twist it clockwise until it feels tight. Keep your fingers on the valve, and using the other hand, place the core tool over the top of the valve stem. Use a valve core tool to further tighten the valve. Carefully remove the valve core tool.

How do I stop my valves from chattering?

1. Check the oil level in the engine; a level that's either too low or too high can cause valve noise. ...
2. Remove the valve covers. ...
3. Disconnect the ignition coil. ...
4. Pour some penetrating oil down the valve guide while it is operating. ...
5. Turn the valve spring half a turn with a wrench.

How long can you drive with a bad valve?

If your lifters are bad or collapsed, you shouldn't drive more than 100 miles and you should use those miles to drive your vehicle to the repair shop.

What causes a valve to tap?

A clicking or tapping noise that gets louder when you rev the engine is probably "tappet" or upper valvetrain noise caused by one of several things: low oil pressure, excessive valve lash, or worn or damaged parts. First, check the engine dipstick to see if the oil level is low.

Can valve seals cause low compression?

Exhaust valves and air intake valves at the top of the cylinder can also get overheated, and leak gas or the valve seals can become too worn to seal the gas in properly. Either way, the result is often low compression. Several valve problems can lead to low compression.
