Is the intensity of insolation?
Andrew Mitchell The intensity of solar radiation is largely a function of the angle of incidence, the angle at which the Sun's rays strike the Earth's surface. If the Sun is positioned directly overhead or 90° from the horizon, the incoming insolation strikes the surface of the Earth at right angles and is most intense.
What is the greatest intensity of insolation?
June 21st=highest angle of insolation=highest solar intensity=longest path of sun=sun directly overhead at 23.5 North of equator.
What are 2 factors that affect intensity of insolation?
The major factors which influence the amount of insolation received are:- Solar constant.
- The angle of incidence of the sun's rays.
- Duration of the day.
- Earth Distance from Sun.
- Transparency of the atmosphere.
What is meant by the insolation?
Insolation is the amount of solar radiation that is received by a planet. Some of this energy is absorbed or reflected by the atmosphere, if there is one, and some reaches the surface.
How does the intensity of insolation affect surface temperatures?
The angle of incoming solar radiation influences seasonal temperatures of locations at different latitudes. ... Therefore, the solar radiation is concentrated over a smaller surface area, causing warmer temperatures.

The intensity of insolation increases, as the angle of insolation gets closer to 90 degrees. 2. The intensity of insolation decreases with an increase in latitude.
Why is it hotter closer to the equator?
Why is it hotter at the equator than it is at the poles? a. Because the equator is closer to the sun. ... Because the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator.
How is insolation measured?
Generally insolation is expressed two ways. One unit is kilowatt-hours per square meter (kWh/m2) per day which represents the average amount of energy hitting an area each day. Another form is watts per square meter (W/m2) which represents the average amount of power hitting an area over an entire year.
How is insolation calculated?
Time equals hour of day from midnight Zenith angle (Z) is calculated using : Z = cos-1 (sinXsinY + cosXcosYcosH). Zenith angle is the angle from the point directly overhead to the point of the sun's position in the sky. ... Solar insolation (I) can be calculated using the following formula: I = S cosZ.
What is insolation example?
The only source of energy for the Earth is the Sun which 1.3 million times the volumes of the Earth. The Sun radiates heat and light energy in all directions and at all times. The amount of solar radiation received by the surface of the Earth is called insolation. ...
What is the primary factor of insolation intensity?
Latitude, climate, and weather patterns are major factors that affect insolation—the amount of solar radiation received on a given surface area during a specific amount of time. Locations in lower latitudes and in arid climates generally receive higher amounts of insolation than other locations.
What time of day is solar intensity greatest?
In the early morning and late afternoon, the sun is low in the sky. Its rays travel further through the atmosphere than at noon, when the sun is at its highest point. On a clear day, the greatest amount of solar energy reaches a solar collector around solar noon.
Why amount and intensity of insolation varies during a day in a season and in a year?
The amount and the intensity of insolation vary during a day, in a season and in a year. ... The fact that the earth's axis makes an angle of 66½ with the plane of its orbit round the sun has a greater influence on the amount of insolation received at different latitudes.
What causes the intensity and duration of solar radiation?
Explanation: at equator sun light strikes at 90 degree. But as you move away to poles the angle at which sun light strikes the surface changes and so intensity is reduced. Other things ;like clouds, fog effect the intensity.
Which latitude has the least variation in intensity of radiation?
Locations at the equator show the least amount of variation in insolation over a one-year period. These slight changes in insolation result only from the annual changes in the altitude of the Sun above the horizon, as the duration of daylight at the equator is always 12 hours.
What is the relationship between day length and radiation intensity?
The relationship between season, day-length and solar radiation is all pretty straight-forward. As you get closer to winter, your days get shorter (assuming you don't live on the equator) and having less hours of daylight reduces the amount of solar energy you receive over the course of a day.
How do you find the intensity of solar radiation?
The main parameters affecting the intensity of solar radiation are the zenith angle zeta of the sun, the water vapor content w of the atmosphere, and Schuepp's turbidity coefficient B. w = 0.18e, where e is the vapor pressure in the atmosphere at the Earth's surface in millibars.
What is the intensity of the sun?
The Solar Constant. The Sun is considered to produces a constant amount of energy. At the surface of the Sun the intensity of the solar radiation is about 6.33×107 W/m2 (note that this is a power, in watts, per unit area in meters).
What is the global insolation average?
The annual, global average insolation is 341.38 W/m2.
Where is insolation the highest?
The intensity of insolation is greatest on the equator. This is because the angle. of the sun is higher, at close to 90.
What is the unit of measurement for solar radiation?
Solar irradiance is the power per unit area received from the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation as measured in the wavelength range of the measuring instrument. The solar irradiance is measured in watt per square metre (W/m2) in SI units.
What is cylindrical collector?
It is formed by curved mirrors, concave channel shaped that concentrates its radiation over a pipeline that carries oil with high temperatures. Parabolic cylindrical collectors are also known as high temperature collectors.
Why is the North Pole cold?
Both the Arctic (North Pole) and the Antarctic (South Pole) are cold because they don't get any direct sunlight. The Sun is always low on the horizon, even in the middle of summer. In winter, the Sun is so far below the horizon that it doesn't come up at all for months at a time.
Why are mountains cold?
As air rises, the pressure decreases. It is this lower pressure at higher altitudes that causes the temperature to be colder on top of a mountain than at sea level.
Which place is the coldest?
Oymyakon is the coldest permanently-inhabited place on Earth and is found in the Arctic Circle's Northern Pole of Cold. In 1933, it recorded its lowest temperature of -67.7°C.
