The sulfate minerals are a class of minerals that include the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻) within their structure. The chromate and manganate minerals have a similar structure and are often included with the sulfates in mineral classification systems. ...

Is sulfate a major mineral?

The Sulfates are an important mineral class and include some very interesting and attractive specimens. Although many minerals belong to this class, only barite, gypsum, and anhydrite can be considered common.

Is sulfur a sulfate mineral?

As an element, sulfur is an important constituent of sulfate and sulfide minerals. It occurs in the dissolved ions of many waters. It is an important constituent of many atmospheric, subsurface, and dissolved gases.

What is a sulfate mineral made of?

Sulfates are made of compounds of sulfur combined with metals and oxygen. It is a massive organization of minerals that have a tendency to be smooth, and translucent like this barite.

What type of rock is sulfate?

Sulfate minerals are delicate and occur near the Earth's surface in sedimentary rocks such as limestone, gypsum rock, and rock salt. Sulfates tend to live near oxygen and water.

21) Sulfate Minerals

What type of minerals are sulfates?

The sulfate minerals are a class of minerals that include the sulfate ion (SO₄²⁻) within their structure. The sulfate minerals occur commonly in primary evaporite depositional environments, as gangue minerals in hydrothermal veins and as secondary minerals in the oxidizing zone of sulfide mineral deposits.

What is an example of a sulfide mineral?

Some examples of sulfides include galena ( the principle ore mineral for lead and silver), cinnabar (the main ore mineral for mercury), and chalcopyrite (which provides copper). ... These minerals are not to be confused with sulfates which are comprised of a central atom surrounded by oxygen atoms.

What is an example of a sulfate?

Here are some of the common examples of the sulfate: Magnesium Sulfate. Copper Sulphate. Gypsum.

What is the mineral oxide?

Oxide mineral, any naturally occurring inorganic compound with a structure based on close-packed oxygen atoms in which smaller, positively charged metal or other ions occur in interstices.

What are sulfide minerals used for?

Tantalum and niobium sulfides have low friction coefficients and can be used as lubricants for optical and sensitive instruments. Rare earth sulfides are semi-conductors and have been used in thermoelectric devices. Alkaline earth sulfides plus those of calcium and zinc are used for phosphor compositions.

Is sulfur element or compound?

sulfur (S), also spelled sulphur, nonmetallic chemical element belonging to the oxygen group (Group 16 [VIa] of the periodic table), one of the most reactive of the elements. Pure sulfur is a tasteless, odourless, brittle solid that is pale yellow in colour, a poor conductor of electricity, and insoluble in water.

Where are sulfate minerals found?

Sulfate minerals can be found in at least four kinds: as late oxidation products of preexisting sulfide ores, as evaporite deposits, in circulatory solutions, and in deposits formed by hot water or volcanic gases.

Which among the following is mineral of Sulphur?

There are many sulfur-bearing minerals. Among the most common are anhydrite (calcium sulfate), barite (barium sulfate), chalcocite (copper sulfide), chalcopyrite, cinnabar (mercury sulfide), galena (lead sulfide), kieserite (magnesium sulfate), gypsum, sphalerite (zinc sulfide), and stibnite (antimony sulfide).

What describes a sulfide mineral?

sulfide mineral, sulfide also spelled sulphide, any member of a group of compounds of sulfur with one or more metals. Most of the sulfides are simple structurally, exhibit high symmetry in their crystal forms, and have many of the properties of metals, including metallic lustre and electrical conductivity.

Which is a silicate mineral?

The vast majority of the minerals that make up the rocks of Earth's crust are silicate minerals. These include minerals such as quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, pyroxene, olivine, and a variety of clay minerals.

How are sulfate and sulfide minerals different?

Sulfide (British English also sulphide) is an inorganic anion of sulfur with the chemical formula S2− or a compound containing one or more S2− ions. ... The sulfate or sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula SO2−4.

Is oxide a mineral?

Oxides are common minerals that occur as minor or accessory phases in the Earth's crust and Upper Mantle. Spinel group members, baddeleyite, rutile, and ilmenite are common minerals in the Upper Mantle (Deer et al.

Is Manganese an oxide?

Mn oxides are the predominant ore minerals in most of today's commercially important Mn deposits, commonly formed by weathering of Mn-rich carbonates or silicates, either by in situ oxidation or by dissolution followed by migration and reprecipitation (4).

Is quartz an oxide mineral?

Quartz (SiO₂), feldspar (sodium-aluminum silicate NaAlSi₃O₈), olivine (iron or magnesium silicate (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄) (Note that in quartz the anion is oxygen, and while it could be argued, therefore, that quartz is an oxide, it is always classed with the silicates.)

What is sulphate in chemistry?

Sulphate also spelled as Sulfate is a chemical compound that is composed of sulphur and oxygen atoms. ... Sulphate is a derivative of salts with a variety of elements including potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and barium.

Is sulphate a salt?

Sulfate is a salt that forms when sulfuric acid reacts with another chemical. It's a broader term for other synthetic sulfate-based chemicals you may be concerned about, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

What is difference between sulphate and sulfate?

"Sulfate" is the spelling recommended by IUPAC, but "sulphate" was traditionally used in British English.

Why are sulfides considered as valuable minerals?

Above all, the sulfides are the most important group of ore minerals because they are responsible for the concentration of a wide range of metals as mineable deposits. They are also potential sources of pollution, be it of the air, surface waters, or soils.

Is sphalerite a sulphide ore?

Sphalerite is a sulfide mineral with the chemical formula (Zn,Fe)S and an ore of zinc. ... Sphalerite is found in a variety of deposit types, but it is primarily in sedimentary exhalative, Mississippi-Valley type, and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits.

What is a halogen mineral?

Group of five chemically related elements. They are: astatine, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, and iodine. Minerals that are composed of the halogen elements are known as halides. (Astatine is synthetic and there are no natural minerals that contain it.)
