noun Anatomy. the formation of a myelin sheath.

What does the word myelination mean?

Myelination: The formation of the myelin sheath around a nerve fiber.

Is myelination a word?

Myelination is a term in anatomy that is defined as the process of forming a myelin sheath around a nerve to allow nerve impulses to move more quickly.

What does myelination mean in psychology?

n. the formation and development of a myelin sheath around the axon of a neuron, which is effected by neuroglia, such as Schwann cells. Researchers look to anomalies in this process to explain some forms of severe mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia).

What does the dendrites do in a neuron?

Most neurons have multiple dendrites, which extend out-ward from the cell body and are specialized to receive chemical signals from the axon termini of other neurons. Dendrites convert these signals into small electric impulses and transmit them inward, in the direction of the cell body.

What is the role of myelinated sheath in neuron?

Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. ... This myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down. This can cause diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

What is myelinated nerve fibers?

Myelinated retinal nerve fiber layers (MRNF) are retinal nerve fibers anterior to the lamina cribrosa that, unlike normal retinal nerve fibers, have a myelin sheath. Clinically, they appear to be gray-white well-demarcated patches with frayed borders on the anterior surface of the neurosensory retina.

What are axons?

Each neuron in your brain has one long cable that snakes away from the main part of the cell. This cable, several times thinner than a human hair, is called an axon, and it is where electrical impulses from the neuron travel away to be received by other neurons.

What is the junction of two neurons called?

Synapse – The junction between the axon of one neuron and the dendrite of another, through which the two neurons communicate.

What is myelination quizlet?

myelination is the process in which. -part of an axon is wrapped in a myelin sheath. myelination. the process by which axons become coated with myelin, a fatty substance that speeds the transmission of nerve impulses from neuron to neuron.

What does lateralization mean?

: localization of function or activity on one side of the body in preference to the other.

What does myelination do for the developing child?

As myelination progresses, more of the frontal lobes contribute to brain function, and this gradually increases the individual's attention spans and improves the speed of processing information, both of which then improve with age.

How do you pronounce amygdala?

Amygdala (noun, “ah-MIG-dah-la”, plural “amygdalae”)

Are oligodendrocytes myelinated?

Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of the central nervous system (CNS). They are generated from oligodendrocyte progenitor cells following tightly orchestrated processes of migration, proliferation and differentiation [1].

Why are some neurons myelinated and others not?

The majority of the neurons in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system have myelinated axons. This is because the most central nervous system and peripheral nervous system neurons require fast signal transmission such as neurons responsible for spinal reflexes.

Why is myelination needed on motor neurons but not on neurons in the brain?

Schwann cells are myelinating-glial cells which ensheath motor nerves with myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). It is necessary for motor neurons to be myelinated for the proper function of neurons such as rapid conduction velocity, protection from environmental toxin and metabolic support of axons.

What effect does myelination have on axons?

Much like the insulation around the wires in electrical systems, glial cells form a membraneous sheath surrounding axons called myelin, thereby insulating the axon. This myelination, as it is called, can greatly increase the speed of signals transmitted between neurons (known as action potentials).
