Leptokurtic distributions are distributions with positive kurtosis larger than that of a normal distribution. A normal distribution has a kurtosis of exactly three. Therefore, a distribution with kurtosis greater than three would be labeled a leptokurtic distribution.

Is Platykurtic normal distribution?

The term "platykurtic" refers to a statistical distribution in which the excess kurtosis value is negative. For this reason, a platykurtic distribution will have thinner tails than a normal distribution will, resulting in fewer extreme positive or negative events.

Is at Leptokurtic a distribution?

The T distribution is an example of a leptokurtic distribution. It has fatter tails than the normal (you can also look at the first image above to see the fatter tails). Therefore, the critical values in a Student's t-test will be larger than the critical values from a z-test.

What does it mean if a data set has a Leptokurtic distribution?

Leptokurtic is having very long and skinny tails, which means there are more chances of outliers. Positive values of kurtosis indicate that distribution is peaked and possesses thick tails.

How do you interpret Leptokurtic distribution?

A leptokurtic distribution has a higher peak and taller (i.e. fatter and heavy) tails than a normal distribution. An extreme positive kurtosis indicates a distribution where more of the values are located in the tails of the distribution rather than around the mean.

Is Mesokurtic normal curve?

Mesokurtic distributions have the same kurtosis as that of the normal distribution, or normal curve, also known as a bell curve. In contrast, a leptokurtic distribution has fatter tails. This means that the probability of extreme events is greater than that implied by the normal curve.

What is an example of a Leptokurtic distribution?

An example of a leptokurtic distribution is the Laplace distribution, which has tails that asymptotically approach zero more slowly than a Gaussian, and therefore produces more outliers than the normal distribution.

What is Leptokurtic formula?

The formula for kurtosis is expressed as the ratio of the fourth moment and variance (s²) squared or squared the second moment of the distribution. Mathematically, it is represented as, Kurtosis = n * Σⁿ_i(Y_i – Ȳ)⁴ / (Σⁿ_i(Y_i – Ȳ)²)².

What is the acceptable range of kurtosis?

Both skew and kurtosis can be analyzed through descriptive statistics. Acceptable values of skewness fall between − 3 and + 3, and kurtosis is appropriate from a range of − 10 to + 10 when utilizing SEM (Brown, 2006).

Is median a good measure of average?

Mean is the most frequently used measure of central tendency and generally considered the best measure of it. ... Median is the preferred measure of central tendency when: There are a few extreme scores in the distribution of the data. (NOTE: Remember that a single outlier can have a great effect on the mean).

Why does Leptokurtic have fatter tails?

This definition is used so that the standard normal distribution has a kurtosis of three. Leptokurtic (Kurtosis > 3): Distribution is longer, tails are fatter. ... The reason for this is because the extreme values are less than that of the normal distribution.

What is the skewness and kurtosis of a normal distribution?

So, a normal distribution will have a skewness of 0. Skewness essentially measures the relative size of the two tails. Kurtosis is a measure of the combined sizes of the two tails. It measures the amount of probability in the tails.

What does Platykurtosis mean?

platykurtosis (uncountable) (statistics) The property of having kurtosis less than that of a normal distribution; equivalently, having negative excess kurtosis.

How many modes does a normal distribution curve have?

A normal distribution curve is unimodal ( it has only one mode). The curve is symmetric about the mean. It means that the right portion of the distribution is equal to the left portion of the distribution. The curve is continuous; that is, there are no gaps or holes.

What is kurtosis used for?

Definition of Kurtosis

Like skewness, kurtosis is a statistical measure that is used to describe distribution. Whereas skewness differentiates extreme values in one versus the other tail, kurtosis measures extreme values in either tail.

What values of kurtosis show the data is normal?

Closer to zero the better. According to Bulmer M. G. (1979), Principles of Statistics. Byrne, 2010 suggest kurtosis value of 3 for a normal, while values exceeding 5 indicates data are nonnormallly distributed ( Bentler, 2006).

How do you interpret kurtosis in SPSS?

If the value is less than -1.0, the distribution is left skewed. For kurtosis, if the value is greater than + 1.0, the distribution is leptokurtik. If the value is less than -1.0, the distribution is platykurtik.

How do you determine normal distribution?

A normal distribution is one in which the values are evenly distributed both above and below the mean. A population has a precisely normal distribution if the mean, mode, and median are all equal. For the population of 3,4,5,5,5,6,7, the mean, mode, and median are all 5.

What is the second moment in statistics?

2) The second moment is the variance, which indicates the width or deviation. ... 3) The third moment is the skewness, which indicates any asymmetric 'leaning' to either left or right.

What does geometric distribution mean?

The geometric distribution gives the probability that the first occurrence of success requires k independent trials, each with success probability p. If the probability of success on each trial is p, then the probability that the kth trial (out of k trials) is the first success is. for k = 1, 2, 3, ....

What do you mean by symmetrical distribution?

A symmetrical distribution occurs when the values of variables appear at regular frequencies and often the mean, median, and mode all occur at the same point. ... In graphical form, symmetrical distributions may appear as a normal distribution (i.e., bell curve).

What is skew and kurtosis?

Skewness is a measure of symmetry, or more precisely, the lack of symmetry. A distribution, or data set, is symmetric if it looks the same to the left and right of the center point. Kurtosis is a measure of whether the data are heavy-tailed or light-tailed relative to a normal distribution.

Is the first moment the mean?

As mentioned above, the first moment is the mean and the second moment about the mean is the sample variance.

When beta2 is greater than 3 The distribution is?

Answer: For the normal distribution, β2 = 3; cases for which β2 > 3 indicate distributions that are more outlier-prone (i.e., have heavier tails) than the normal (Gaussian) distribution, while those for which β2 < 3 indicate distributions that are less outlier-prone than the normal.
