In geography, latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north–south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle (defined below) which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° (North or South) at the poles.

Is latitude south or West?

Latitude is your distance North or South from Earth's equator, measured in degrees. 0° is the latitude at the equator, +90° is the latitude at the North Pole, and -90° is the latitude at the South Pole.

Is high latitude north?

The middle latitudes are found between 30 degrees N/S and 60 degrees N/S. And the high latitudes are found between 60 degrees N/S and the poles (90 degrees N/S).

Which is latitude and longitude?

Tell students that the lines running across the page are lines of latitude, and the lines running up and down the page are lines of longitude. Latitude runs 0–90° north and south. Longitude runs 0–180° east and west.

Is longitude east and west?

Longitude is the measurement east or west of the prime meridian. Longitude is measured by imaginary lines that run around the Earth vertically (up and down) and meet at the North and South Poles. ... Half of the world, the Eastern Hemisphere, is measured in degrees east of the prime meridian.

How do you read latitude?

When outlining the coordinates of a location, the line of latitude is always given first followed by the line of longitude. Therefore, the coordinates of this location will be: 10°N latitude, 70°W longitude. The line of latitude is read as 41 degrees (41°), 24 minutes (24′), 12.2 seconds (12.2”) north.

What latitude is considered North?

The latitude of the North Pole is 90 degrees N, and the latitude of the South Pole is 90 degrees S. Like the poles, some circles of latitude are named.

What direction do latitude lines run?

Lines of latitude run East-West, while lines of longitude run North-South.

Where is middle latitude?

The middle latitudes are a spatial region on Earth located between the latitudes 23°26'22" and 66°33'39" north, and 23°26'22" and 66°33'39" south. They include Earth's subtropical and temperate zones, which lie between the tropics and the polar circles.

What is the example of latitude?

Examples of important latitude lines/parallels include: Equator: 0 degrees of latitude. Arctic Circle: is 66.5 degrees north. Antarctic Circle: 66.5 degrees south.

Is latitude vertical or horizontal?

Hemisphere – one half of the planet Page 2 Latitude – horizontal lines on a map that run east and west. They measure north and south of the equator. Longitude – the vertical lines on a map that run north and south. They measure east and west of the Prime Meridian.

What does latitude look like?

Latitude and Longitude lines are a grid map system too. But instead of being straight lines on a flat surface, Lat/Long lines encircle the Earth, either as horizontal circles or vertical half circles. Horizontal mapping lines on Earth are lines of latitude.

What is the highest latitude?

The highest latitude possible is 90 degrees, which is the latitude of the North and South Poles: 90 degrees N and 90 degrees S. Each degree of latitude extends 69 mi (111 km).

Is Antarctica high latitude?

Why is Antarctica's climate so cold? ... As with the Arctic, Antarctica's high latitude means that sunlight (insolation) hits the surface at a low angle (low angle of incidence), and this means that solar energy is spread over a larger area than would be the case if the sunlight hit the surface at a higher angle.

Can you locate yourself by just using latitude?

There are many methods that can be used to locate ones position on the surface of the earth. ... The method that is universally accepted involves using latitude and longitude, which can provide a highly precise means for locating any place on the planet.

How many lines of latitude are there?

Lines of latitude are known as parallels and there are 180 degrees of latitude in total. The total number of latitudes is also 180; the total number of longitudes is 360.

How do I find a place using latitude and longitude?

To search for a place, enter the latitude and longitude GPS coordinates on Google Maps.
...

1. Degrees, minutes, and seconds (DMS): 41°24'12.2"N 2°10'26.5"E.
2. Degrees and decimal minutes (DMM): 41 24.2028, 2 10.4418.
3. Decimal degrees (DD): 41.40338, 2.17403.

What are the 3 types of latitude?

Technically, there are different kinds of latitude—geocentric, astronomical, and geographic (or geodetic)—but there are only minor differences between them. In most common references, geocentric latitude is implied.

What are the 5 circles of latitude?

The five major circles of latitude are, starting from the North Pole and finishing at the South Pole; the Arctic Circle, the Tropic of Cancer, the Equator, the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle.

Where is 60 north?

The 60th parallel north is a circle of latitude that is 60 degrees north of Earth's equator. It crosses Europe, Asia, the Pacific Ocean, North America, and the Atlantic Ocean. Although it lies approximately twice as far away from the Equator as from the North Pole, the 60th parallel is half as long as the Equator line.

Where is the exact place on Earth?

Any point on earth can be located by specifying its latitude and longitude, including Washington, DC, which is pictured here. Lines of latitude and longitude form an imaginary global grid system, shown in Fig. 1.17. Any point on the globe can be located exactly by specifying its latitude and longitude.

What is the main line of latitude?

What are the Major Lines of Latitude (or Parallels)? The five major parallels of latitudes from north to south are called: Arctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and the Antarctic Circle.
