What is the difference between iridotomy and iridectomy?

Iridectomy, is a procedure to remove a part of the iris, which is the colored circular membrane behind the cornea of the eye. Earlier this was performed surgically (surgical iridectomy). However, now the procedure is in most cases performed with a laser (laser iridotomy).

Why is iridectomy done?

Other possible reasons for iridectomy include the removal of the tissue as a preparation for a cataract surgery, placement of an intraocular lens in the anterior chamber, and treatment of trauma to the iris. As for the expected results, patients with glaucoma may experience a more stable intraocular pressure.

What is an iridotomy procedure?

Laser iridotomy, also called laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI), is a method by which ophthalmologists create a microscopic hole in the iris using a laser to open the angle (or internal drainage system of the eye) in patients with narrow or closed angles.

The entire process only takes a few minutes, though you'll need to stay in the office for a bit so we can reassess your eye pressure before you go home. There is no recovery time following a laser iridotomy, though your vision may be blurry for a few minutes afterward.

What is the purpose of a surgical iridectomy during trabeculectomy surgery?

Conclusions. Trabeculectomy performed without peripheral iridectomy appears to be as effective in lowering intraocular pressure as when performed with peripheral iridectomy, but it is a safer procedure, with a lower incidence of postoperative inflammation.

The laser is applied through a special contact lens to the drainage system of the eye where it stimulates a biochemical change that improves the outflow of fluid from the eye.

What is the difference between Trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy?

The trabeculectomy bypasses the episcleral venous system. Similarly in congenital glaucoma, CTT theoretically provides the following 2 mechanisms for IOP reduction: trabeculotomy reduces increased trabecular meshwork resistance, and aqueous filtration is increased via trabeculectomy.

Can you drive after laser iridotomy?

Still other eye drops may be used to reduce inflammation. Everyone heals differently, but most people resume normal activities immediately following treatment, although you'll need to have someone drive you home after your procedure. For the next few days your eyes may be red, a little scratchy and sensitive to light.

Is laser iridotomy really necessary?

It is recommended in eyes which have the angle closed for at least half the eye and have high eye pressure or glaucoma. In eyes which have a closed angle but normal eye pressure and no optic nerve damage, laser iridotomy may be recommended as a preventive treatment.

How do they fix cataracts?

During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed, and a clear artificial lens is usually implanted. In some cases, however, a cataract may be removed without implanting an artificial lens. Surgical methods used to remove cataracts include: Using an ultrasound probe to break up the lens for removal.

What is peripheral iridotomy?

Laser peripheral iridotomy (also described as 'laser iridotomy' or simply termed 'iridotomy') is a medical procedure which uses a laser device to create a hole in the iris, thereby allowing aqueous humor to traverse directly from the posterior to the anterior chamber and, consequently, relieve a pupillary block.
